Sunshine, Sand and Bikinis! From Spanish Banks to English Bay you don’t need to look far to find a beach volleyball court in Vancouver. Imagine miles of freshly raked sand, crisply hung nets inviting players to approach the court, and a light ocean breeze keeping the summer temperatures game ready. In a nutshell, that is Vancouver’s beach volleyball scene.
My volleyball glory days are long behind me, yet the memory of an aced serve or kill shot remains, and I must confess during the summer months, as I stroll along Kits beach, I find myself fascinated by the action. Many of Vancouver’s most competitive athletes train and play at Kits. It’s a joy to watch them battle the elements and each other for volleyball supremacy. However, not all courts are occupied by elite athletes. In fact, beach volleyball is an extremely social game, with its own unique and quirky culture. Most often, especially at Spanish Banks, you will find recreational players enjoying each other, picnics and occasionally a volleyball match will break out.
