The Perfect Engagement Session Guide

Here at Bayside there are few things that we love more than a good engagement shoot! Being able to share picture-perfect couples and their love stories is always a thrill. Over the years we have had the pleasure of sharing some fabulous engagement sessions which is why we have created our very own guide to the perfect engagement shoot. We have reached out to a few of our favorite photographers and vendors who have provided their tips and insight on how to have the best engagement shoot possible.

The Perfect Engagement Session Guide Brittney & Jimmy’s Bayside Engagement | Britt Croft Photography

Location

When it comes down to choosing a location, the first step is to pick someplace that has significance to you as a couple- we love it when couples share bits of their love story through location & setting! Brittani Croft , who beautifully captured Brittney and Jimmy’s engagement on the Patuxent, says, “The best locations are those that have personal meaning to you. If it’s special to you and allows you two to feel connected and relaxed, that’s all you need.” Something else to consider when choosing a location is to pick someplace where you will feel comfortable getting your picture taken. Danielle Giannandrea of Dani Leigh Photography says, “The rule of thumb that I follow is do not pick somewhere you are not comfortable kissing. If you are not into PDA, definitely pick somewhere with a private feel.” Editors, Krista and Natalie have even compiled a two-part list of the best engagement shoot locations along the Chesapeake! Check them out here and here !

Wardrobe

Deciding what to wear for your engagement shoot can be tough, but we’ve got three guidelines that will make your decision a little bit easier. First, be sure to wear something comfortable. Danielle says, “Don’t wear something that you are going to be uncomfortable sitting in or something that you are constantly worrying about. You know what flatters you- we all have a favorite shirt or dress- wear that!” Second, don’t be afraid to wear color. Color can add a lot to photos and, as Danielle says, “It totally translates so much about you as an individual and you as a couple.” Finally, ACCESSORIZE. Our very own Krista Jones, of Krista Jones Photography , says, “Accessories make a huge difference in outfits!” Statement necklaces and shoes are a great way to dress up an outfit. And don’t forget that guys can accessorize, too! Bow-ties and suspenders are both fantastic options that add a little fun to an outfit.

Comfort

Comfort is key for an engagement shoot! One of the most important things is that a couple feels comfortable in front of the camera. Krista says, “Posing and taking photos doesn’t comes naturally to 99% of my couples so I walk them through posing and try to make them laugh and interact with one another throughout the session.” If your nerves are getting the best of you on the day of your shoot try to relax by connecting with your photographer. Amanda of Amanda McMahon Photography says, “In order to help the couple be more comfortable with both me and the camera I will ask how they met, what they like to do in their spare time, and try to really engage with them and show them that I can relate to them in some form or another.” And if that doesn’t help, Krista says, “It doesn’t hurt to have a drink before your session!”

Make it Your Own

Finally, don’t forget to add personal touches to your shoot. One of the great things about engagement photos is that they are an opportunity for you to share part of your love story. Britt says that she encourages couples to bring their four-legged friends, while Amanda likes to include props or items that hold significant meaning to the couple.

But most importantly, have fun! Your engagement photos are something that you will cherish forever so make the most of your shoot! Don’t forget to check out all of the fabulous photographers on our vendor list for a chance to see more of their stunning engagement sessions!

DIY | Painted Mr + Mrs Chair Signs

We are all about the new trend of ‘reception chair signs’… especially when they are DIY-ed! Today we are sharing the easy way to make AMAZING Mr & Mrs. chair signs with your favorite font. These will be the perfect touch for your special day…

DIY | Painted Mr + Mrs Chair Signs

SUPPLIES:

  • wood plaque of any style
  • a pencil
  • your choice of craft paint
  • paintbrush
  • furniture tacks
  • ribbon
  • print out of the words you’d like to use, sized for your plaque

DIY | Painted Mr + Mrs Chair Signs

To start, print out the words you would like to use (mr, mrs, bride, groom, his, hers, etc.) and size it for your choice of wooden plaque.

DIY | Painted Mr + Mrs Chair Signs

Turn the print-out upside down and shade the entire font area with the side of your pencil.

DIY | Painted Mr + Mrs Chair Signs

With the pencil side facing your plaque, carefully trace the entire word and all it’s details. This creates the perfect outline of your word on the plaque… it’s a graphite transfer!

Then carefully paint your word, keeping the printout close by for reference. *If you aren’t great with a paint brush, you can also do this step with a paint pen or Sharpie, but Sharpies can bleed a little on the wood.

I painted the edge of my plaque for a finishing touch… let the paint dry for at least 4 hours before moving onto the next step.

Now for the ribbon.. this is how you will hang your sign.

DIY | Painted Mr + Mrs Chair Signs

Cut roughly 20″ of 1.5″ ribbon. Fold one end under and then push two furniture tacks through the ribbon and into wooden plaque; one on each side.

Isn’t it lovely..? Such a beautiful sign for such a simple technique.

CRAFTERS TIP // if you want to hang these signs off the corner of your chairs – tacking both ends of the ribbon right away is fine. If you want them to hang like ours, you will need to have someone tack one end of the ribbon at your venue over the chair back. Also, the exact length of your ribbon will differ due to the type of chair it will be placed on.

The great thing about this technique is that you can use any font you desire along with the paint color of your choice; meaning your custom sign will perfectly match your special event!

real wedding | Andre + Christine

“Christine & Andre’s wedding was held on a beautiful autumn day, it was full of fun and relaxation. The couple created their own decorations and took care with each item, ensuring it was well thought out and meaningful to them. The feel of the day was very vintage and DIY. Most importantly the two were very much in love and focused on each other the entire day.” – Picture That Photography

“My favorite memory is our entire wedding day! It was everything I had dreamed of and was so grateful to celebrate our love with our closest friends and family…

real wedding | Andre + Christine

..Since we had 17 months to plan our wedding I had a lot of time to craft! Our DIY projects included the table numbers, the paper flowers made from old French books, the favors, the photobooth backdrop and many of our flowers were from Andre’s mother’s garden!

..My something blue and something borrowed was the garter Andre’s grandmother wore on her wedding day. My something old was an antique French ivory shawl I purchased from Etsy, and my something new was my dress!

..When planning, stick to your own style and make your day unique and only what you and your fiance envisioned it to be.” – Christine, the bride
