Real NYC Engagement Session | Holly + Carlos, Part II

Hoping everyone had a very Happy Holiday! We’re thrilled to come back with Part II of Holly and Carlos’ amazing New York City engagement session. As we mentioned in Part I , Holly and Carlos craved a chic Manhattan engagement session packed with city style {New Year’s inspiring outfit changes!} and a fair dose of culture and classic NYC panache.
Real NYC Engagement Session | Holly + Carlos, Part II Cengiz of Adagion Studio captured some amazing moments, and Merci New York had a great time styling the shoot and working on the appropriate locations that set the perfect mise en scene, such as the Gramercy Park Hotel , below…
Real NYC Engagement Session | Holly + Carlos, Part II While styling Holly’s “evening” look, Merci New York wanted to maintain the gold tones from her “day” look , but up the ante with some dramatic accents {such as the bold-bow Milly dress and glorious Erickson Beamon cocktail ring } from Merci’s wardrobe partner, Rent the Runway .
Real NYC Engagement Session | Holly + Carlos, Part II We chose a pit stop at the Gramercy Park Hotel, in large part for their fabulous art collection and eclectic New York atmosphere. Where else can one find outstanding skyline views, paired with a great assortment of Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol pieces {among others}? It was a hip and colorful backdrop for the city-centric couple. A champagne toast completed the action packed day. Real NYC Engagement Session | Holly + Carlos, Part II All of our best for a very Happy New Year. Coincidentally, this article celebrates our 300th post and the end of a wonderful first, full year. Thank you for your support, readership and friendship. Looking forward to seeing you in 2011!

Real NYC Engagement Session | Holly + Carlos, Part I

Last week, Merci New York had the pleasure of styling this amazing engagement session for Holly and Carlos. The shoot was photographed by Cengiz of Adagion Studio . Cengiz fueled our holiday trek around Manhattan with a great eye, a lot of laughs, wonderful energy, and peanut butter M&M’s {Holly’s favorite} to keep everyone’s eyes on the prize: “A classic and chic New York City backdrop, with great fashion and fun details.”
Between the style {Milly! Zegna!}, the landmarks {GCT! Gramercy Park Hotel!}, the weighty art {Damien Hirst! Andy Warhol!} and sleek interior design {Phillipe Starck!}, it was clearly one of my favorite styling projects to date.
In fact, I love all the images so much, I’m splitting this e-session up into two posts. Part I today in Midtown, Part II Monday in Gramercy {and a special style segment on one of our favorite blogs, coming soon}.
Real NYC Engagement Session | Holly + Carlos, Part I To kick off their engagement session, we pulled a wonderful vintage-inspired gold lace Milly dress from Merci New York’s wardrobe partner, Rent the Runway , for a polished “day” look. To keep Holly looking modern, we balanced the dainty lace with Cara’s Rocker Chain Necklace, another black chain for length, and AV Max’s Glitzy Glamour cuff. Her look was finished with some very opaque tights and her own suede wedge booties.
Real NYC Engagement Session | Holly + Carlos, Part I Carlos was equally dapper in a Zegna suit and dress furnishings… The couple’s posh, glam {yet neutral} wardrobe played well against the Phillipe Starck designed space… {Who said all NYC engagement sessions needed to take place in the springtime}?
Real NYC Engagement Session | Holly + Carlos, Part I Taking to the streets of NYC, Holly and Carlos bundled themselves up in classic black outerwear, the uniform of every city go-er. {Holly’s coat is from Anthropologie }. The couple may not have caught many of the M&Ms on the steps of the New York Public Library {above} but certainly had fun trying!
Real NYC Engagement Session | Holly + Carlos, Part I Stop two {and a hint of a wardrobe change, perhaps? You’ll know for sure when you read Monday’s post}. Holly and Carlos take to Grand Central Terminal for some holiday cheer… and a shoe shine, for good measure. This was such a fun stop on our shoot. The tourists bustling in and out of the station were totally enamored by the dapper couple taking photos in the corridors. Some even shot pics of their own.
Real NYC Engagement Session | Holly + Carlos, Part I Paired with some vintage Samsonite pieces from the sixties, Holly and Carlos’ shoot had a hint of Mad Men-esque panache, but it wasn’t too overdone. They wanted engagement photos that spoke to their chic, city lifestyle and their love for each other – the styled paired with the sincere.
Monday, we’ll share part two of Holly and Carlos’ session. {A great little Christmas present, if you ask me}… More fashion, more fun, great NYC locales, and wonderful chemistry to boot.

A Day with L’Atelier Rouge

I love this charismatic video clip from our friends at L’Atelier Rouge . Brides rarely get to see the prep and process behind their event installation, but this little segment shares the magic, creativity and hard work behind a great team. { And I love the before and afters at The Plaza and 583 Park Avenue }. The details are so stylish, and so classic New York City — we’re in love, and know you will be, too.
Exclusive Sneak Peek: Martha Stewart Weddings Winter 2011 Issue + a Chic New York Wedding Angela and Eric’s wedding is so quintessential NYC… They were engaged in Central Park and wed in St. Patrick’s Cathedral . They walked down Fifth Avenue carrying big white balloons, followed by their guests, to their reception at the Harvard Club . Each table was marked for a local landmark significant to the couple, {absolutely stunning if you ask me}, and Matthew Robbins Design created lush all-white florals for the tres-elegant affair. Hands down though, I think the sweetest thing is that Angela wore her grandma’s dress during the ceremony…

Tuesday Shoesday | Red Ballet Slippers, Chloe Spring 2011

Tuesday Shoesday | Red Ballet Slippers, Chloe Spring 2011
One little red shoe, countless possibilities {and comfort, too – imagine that?!}. This particular style comes compliments of the Chloe Spring 2011 runway {below}, and though the bright pop of red is tres-becoming under layers of flowing chiffon, I’m not necessarily supporting the splurge. Your standard Capezio, Repetto, Bloch or Grisko {can you tell I used to dance?} would certainly do just fine for that ceremony to reception shoe-change. Red not edgy enough for you? Try this .

Real New York City Wedding | Cassin + Geoff at Sacred Heart

When I officially branded the Merci New York blog last year, it was created as a home for the classic, elegant, and style-focused Manhattan wedding. The sort of wedding that has a certain refined luxury, but also a warmth that showcases the special love between the bride and groom. In short, a wedding like Cassin and Geoff’s…
Cassin and Geoff were married at Cassin’s alma mater, Sacred Heart on the Upper East Side. The beautiful building stands on the corner of 91st Street and Fifth Avenue. It’s a beautiful venue steeped in tradition and available only to alumni. The only thing more beautiful than the striking venue and gorgeous style of the wedding was Cassin and Geoff’s love for each other…

Dress: Ines De Santo from Bergdorf Goodman
Band: GDO Soul

From the Photographer, Jami Saunders: Cassin and Geoff tied the knot at the Sacred Heart school on the Upper East Side, which is a special venue since you have to be an alumni of the {all-girls, private} school to be able to get married there.
The school feels more like a grand museum and was such a treat to spend such an important day there. I can only image how surreal it must have been for Cassin.
Geoff was such a cheery, laid back groom, {which fits with the fact that he’s Australian!} who was beaming the entire night at his bride.
The band was amazing and had the dance floor packed, while the caterers circled the dance floor with trays of mini desserts… The room was full of smiles and pure gorgeous-ness.

Real NYC Engagement Session | Cassie + John’s Holiday Tour

Real NYC Engagement Session | Cassie + John’s Holiday Tour The storefronts, the lights, the decor and the magic of New York during the holiday season… with a setting like this, who needs anything more? The city is always the perfect place for a great photoshoot, but with all the Christmas buzz, there’s really no need for additional accoutrement. Photographed by Rebecca Crumley {who you also know as The Knot ‘s photo editor and blogger }, the shoot focuses – quite perfectly – on Cassie, John and the magic of the season. And the results are magical.Real NYC Engagement Session | Cassie + John’s Holiday TourReal NYC Engagement Session | Cassie + John’s Holiday Tour Real NYC Engagement Session | Cassie + John’s Holiday TourFrom the Photographer, Rebecca Crumley: So while you may know me as the weddings photo director for The Knot and blogger for The Knot Wedding Obsessions blog , I’ve actually always been a photographer! From time to time I shoot weddings myself and was totally excited when my future clients Cassie and John were up for an engagement shoot. With the help of Melissa from Chandelier Events and makeup extraordinaire Tim Wilkins , we hit the streets of New York City for a festive holiday-themed photo shoot.
My favorite New York City holiday tradition is stopping into Rolf’s for a Christmas cocktail, so it was a must-have location on my list! Other stops included Union Square, a Christmas tree lot, the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue, the Palace Hotel , The Campbell Apartment , Grand Central Station, and of course the New York subways. And since we scheduled it the same day as SantaCon NYC , I was totally psyched we found some willing Santas to pose with Cassie and John!

A Christmas Party in Colin Cowie’s New York Home

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in New York… and if you’re anything like me {admittedly, a “wait-until-the-last-minute holiday perfectionist”}, you’ve been braving the tourists on Fifth Ave, sprucing up your home, and snagging those final holiday gifts – all right under the wire. But chances are, you’re also looking for a little extra posh and polish… and I’m beyond thrilled to deliver some phenomenal inspiration for you… straight from the home of design and entertaining authority, Colin Cowie .
A Christmas Party in Colin Cowie’s New York Home Last week, the amazing Colin Cowie hosted a holiday soiree in his Manhattan home. It was the first time Colin was going to be spending Christmas in New York City in many years… so it was wonderful to see his festive home and learn all about what he will be up to in 2011 {Hint: Colin just released a new app and an amazing wedding newsletter , but more will come soon}. Here I am with Colin, learning about the craft of great cocktails.
A Christmas Party in Colin Cowie’s New York Home Here’s Yusef Austin, principal of the ever-brilliant Elite Elixirs , delivering “cocktail architecture” to the guests. Actually, many of you chic New York ladies are probably veterans of Yusef’s craft and didn’t know it… As mixologist for Boom Room Room at The Standard Hotel { see our story here }, Yusef’s cocktails may {or may not} have inspired a few of my own late-night banquette dancing marathons. They’re decadent, delicious, and sneakily potent.
Below, Yusef was kind enough to share one of Elite Elixirs’ {and Colin’s} favorite holiday cocktails with Merci New York readers- The White Mischief. A Christmas Party in Colin Cowie’s New York Home As you’ll see in Yusef’s photo, he was mixing White Mischief with Avion tequila , and serving the cocktails in some seriously chic mirrored goblets. Yes, these smokey glasses look expensive, but they’re actually from Colin Cowie’s HSN collection … The set of four will set you back a whopping $29.95. To me, these scream great holiday hostess gift. They’re still available {and no, you don’t need to watch TV and call in with the crazies}, just click here .
A Christmas Party in Colin Cowie’s New York Home Here’s Colin with a sea of ladies. From left, Lisa Hauptman of Amy Atlas Events , myself, Janie Medley of The Bride’s Café , Vané Broussard of Brooklyn Bride , Courtney Spencer of Merriment Events , Colin Cowie , Christy Weber of Junebug Weddings , Ami from Elizabeth Anne Designs , Anne Chertoff of From “I Will” to “I Do” , mixologist Yusef Austin and Amy Atlas of Amy Atlas Events
A Christmas Party in Colin Cowie’s New York Home Colin and his team decorated two coordinating Christmas trees; one in his penthouse home, and the one at the left, which greeted guests as they entered the lobby. I adored this idea. It gave a festive nod of what was to come. At right, three-tier trays of yummy treats that everyone {including sweets maven, Amy Atlas }, swooned over.
A Christmas Party in Colin Cowie’s New York Home Here’s a little peek at Colin’s kitchen and holiday tablescape {I love that he keeps his inspiration boards in such a common place to keep the creative process moving… but I digress}. When designing your holiday table, Colin suggests creating a short pattern of ideas, and then duplicating it down the table. To learn more about this concept and more, take a peek at his holiday tablescape segment with the Today Show, here .
A Christmas Party in Colin Cowie’s New York Home Yet another example of fabulous holiday table design. Two points: First, you’ll notice Colin decided to duplicate small plates down the table as well. See the stylish, petite cheese plate? There’s a twin further along the table. Guests can pull from the around the buffet rather than hoard around hunks on a massive cheese plate {I laugh, but you know how popular a cheese plate becomes at a cocktail party}. Alternatively, the small plates fill the table in a non-bulky way, and even the grapes circle back to the metallic and green color palette.
A Christmas Party in Colin Cowie’s New York Home Wondering who that beautiful lady is by Colin’s side? That’s Donna D’Cruz , the DJ darling of the jet-set, fashionistas and yoga lovers alike. {I know that’s a varied lot, but it’s true}. Donna is a celeb-party favorite and her work is beyond amazing. I left the party with many of her mixes, and just playing them in my home made the vibe totally zen-like. {In fact, her track “Double Zero” made me wish I had her music for my husband’s surprise 007 30th Birthday }. Ah well – for any of you planning ANY fete, you must learn more about Donna here , along with the other pan-cultural artists on her label .
A Christmas Party in Colin Cowie’s New York Home One of the most wonderful things about the evening was how warm and inviting it was… Totally lax, fun and all-out amazing. Colin was truly the best of hosts and we had a ton of laughs – he’s certainly one of the most approachable luminaries in the industry. In fact, he’s tweeting just like the rest of us, so you can follow him @colincowie and spark up a conversation of your own!
A Christmas Party in Colin Cowie’s New York Home Have a {holiday, weddings, style, event or just general} question for Colin I haven’t approached? We’d love to hear it! Just leave a comment with your question below and I’ll pick the best for Colin to answer in an upcoming feature on Merci New York.

Fab Vintage Photo Booths | Scott Clark Photography

I love these photo booth images submitted by Scott Clark Photography . Everything about them works: The vintage color, the props, the backdrop… I’m in love.
Fab Vintage Photo Booths | Scott Clark Photography Fab Vintage Photo Booths | Scott Clark Photography Fab Vintage Photo Booths | Scott Clark Photography The photo booth was part of a Mad Men themed birthday party, created by Lauren and Kristen of Bellafare . I don’t know how these tres-talented ladies sourced all the great details, but I thought we’d share a few of Merci’s own tips for scouting the perfect sixties-style accoutrement, right here in New York City!

  • Finding the gear: Screaming Mimis on Lafayette Street is a great go-to for vintage frocks, hats and accessories of all eras. There’s no way you’ll leave empty handed.
  • Scouting the props: Props for Today is an multi-floor emporium of great finds {and yes, I’m giving away one of my favorite resources here}. You’ll be amazing at what you’ll come across. Just make sure you have time to navigate through it all!
  • Getting the glasses: The Columbus Avenue GreenFlea hosts Andre van Hoek from Retro Futuristic every Sunday. Andre is my favorite reason to go to the uptown flea… He travels in from Williamsburg with a slew of vintage eyeglasses that have me channeling my inner Betty Draper every weekend. They’ll put the perfect nostalgic touch on your photo booth.
  • Scoring the photos: Well, that’s what you need Scott Clark Photography for. None of this would look half as awesome without a great photographer who can capture the vintage lighting, source and set up the amazing backdrop, or make your photo booth the hit of the party!

Many thanks for sharing these amazing photos, Scott ! And congrats on such a stylish party, Bellafare !

Tuesday Shoesday | Tsarina

Perfection. Pure and simple. How can you go wrong? {Answer: You can’t}.
Tuesday Shoesday | Tsarina The Tsar 140 Satin Pumps from Christian Louboutin would have been the answer to my wedding shoe prayers {if I hadn’t scoured NYC for a one-off sample pair of Valentino d’Orsay pumps… which I found, thank you very much}. The lace detailing. The floral applique. The grosgrain ribbon trim and large silk white flower right at the peep toe… love.
Tuesday Shoesday | Tsarina
Point is, these dainty little puppies would have made life that much easier.
And after all this wedding planning stress, you at least owe yourself that, don’t you?

Oh yes, I rationalize quite well. Available at Net a Porter .

Perfecting the Best Bridal Beauty Looks with Paul Labrecque

Perfecting the Best Bridal Beauty Looks with Paul Labrecque Happy Monday! We’re thrilled to kick off the week with an exclusive beauty photo shoot, compliments of Merci New York’s resident beauty expert, Paul Labrecque . As many of you know, Paul Labrecque is one of New York’s most sought-after celebrity stylists. His three Manhattan salons {at the tony CORE: Club , Reebok Club and his freestanding Upper East Side location} are filled with fashionable brides prepping to look their wedding-day best.
Today, Paul crafted three of his favorite wedding makeup looks just for Merci New York readers. He detailed the step-by-step process of each look below and orchestrated an exclusive photo shoot with his amazing makeup artist, Daisy… And oh yes, one other small detail… he’s inviting you to receive a free beauty consultation of your own {merci, Paul!}. See below for details.

Pink and Plum Princess:
Perfecting the Best Bridal Beauty Looks with Paul Labrecque Most brides that come to my salon want to “look natural” or “look like themselves.” The perfect color palette that will look natural and simple yet sexy and picture appropriate are Pinks and Plums. My preference for brides is a foundation application with an airbrush makeup machine. Most bridal makeup artists use airbrush makeup and even though it costs more, it is the way to go. Skin and makeup will look flawless in photos and last through the whole day and night. Perfecting the Best Bridal Beauty Looks with Paul Labrecque After the foundation applied with the airbrush machine, focus on a plum perfect eye. Pinks and Plum shades are so broad, it is up to you and your makeup artist to match the exact palette for you and skin tone. It can be subtle with more pinks and shimmers or striking with more purples and plums. Finish the look with plump gorgeous lips using Lip Fusion Lip Gloss in Sugar . This specific color not only has a pink mauve hue, but it also has blue undertones that help make your teeth appear whiter. Your whitened smile and plumper lips will show how gloriously happy you are on your big day!

Hollywood Glamour:
Perfecting the Best Bridal Beauty Looks with Paul Labrecque One of my favorite eras I pull inspiration from for my brides is the 1940′s Hollywood glamour era. A clean and classic eye with a bold and sexy red lip is an incredible way to make a dramatic Hollywood entrance down the aisle to your leading man.
Perfecting the Best Bridal Beauty Looks with Paul Labrecque When I say clean and classic eye, I refer to a natural looking eye with nude and natural colors. I prefer minimal black eye liner for this look. Fake lashes with fabulous black mascara like Cle de Peau’s The Mascara is a must.
Perfecting the Best Bridal Beauty Looks with Paul Labrecque A natural pinkish cheek will allow a blushing glow. The focal point for this bridal look must be the fabulous red lips. A wonderful red that works for most skin tones is NARS Christina which is a shimmery Raspberry color. To really be bold, go with NARS Fire Down Below and a hint of clear gloss. The groom won’t be able to handle the wait for “You may now kiss the bride!”

Golden Goddess:
Perfecting the Best Bridal Beauty Looks with Paul Labrecque Whether having an elegant black tie wedding or an intimate affair with your closest friends at a local restaurant, wearing a sexy smokey eye is a perfect choice, but break the norm by using gold and browns instead of heavy black and charcoal colors. The look is sexy and glamorous yet softer than the conventional charcoal smokey eye. It particularly suits medium to dark skin tones but can be tried and tested on just about anyone.
The key to keeping eyeshadow from melting into your eyelid crease as the day goes on is to kept eyelids oil-free. Start with a primer like NARS Pro-Prime . Next, apply eyeliner above the upper lash line, drawing line thicker in the middle of eye. For color on the bottom {a key smokey eye look} you’ll want to use a eyeliner pencil because they’re easiest to smudge. Once the line is drawn, run your finger over it to smudge the line. You can also apply a bit of shadow to get full smudge effect.
Perfecting the Best Bridal Beauty Looks with Paul Labrecque Apply light base color Again, the key to a smokey eye is pairing a lighter base with the darker hue. I prefer a nice cream shade for my base. Sweep a light, shimmery shadow over the lids to your brow bone. Blend in darker color, but keep dark color below the crease. Now that you have the base and eyeliner on, it’s time to get the smokey effect. You need a darker eyeshadow shade. Using an eyeshadow brush blend in color starting at your lash line, blending up. Make sure to blend color into the lash line so the eye liner disappears. Stop deep color at crease. The key here is to blend, blend, blend. Perfecting the Best Bridal Beauty Looks with Paul Labrecque Finish with several coats of mascara. You’ll want to apply a few coats of mascara so lashes are thick and dark. If you don’t have naturally long, curled lashes, curl them with a lash curler first. Pair your gorgeous golden eye with a neutral gloss like NARS Sandpiper which looks great on everyone. Make sure your maid of honor has extra Sandpiper gloss for you in her purse!

Real New York Wedding | Amanda + Jason in the Hamptons

Real New York Wedding | Amanda + Jason in the Hamptons As Amanda and Jason’s intimate Hamptons wedding attests, a gorgeous, glam and sophisticated New York wedding need not be in a big ballroom. Photographer Joshua Zuckerman captured all the love, romance, beauty {and style!} of this magical, family-only fete at LongHouse Reserve , a beautiful sculpture garden in East Hampton. We’re thrilled to share the details with you.

From the Photographer, Joshua Zuckerman: Amanda and Jason live in Manhattan, but have spent every summer they’ve been together in the Hamptons, so it holds many memories for them. It was a perfect fit for the intimate, yet sophisticated wedding they wanted to plan.
Amanda went to East Hampton in the winter and even though the grounds were snow covered and the trees were bare, she knew instantly that LongHouse Reserve was exactly what she was looking for. When it came time to pull it all together, they engaged wedding planner Jill Gordon and team, who are known for creating stylish, tasteful events with the Hamptons best vendors.
Since they decided to have a family-only wedding {40 people total}, they wanted everyone to be seated at one long table instead of many small tables. Typically the bride and groom would be seated in the middle of the long table but the couple chose to sit next to each other at the head of the table so they could really see all of our guests and savor the evening.
For the table, Amanda wanted lots of low flowers arrangements in different colors {pink, white, purple and apple green} and different kinds of vases, with lots of candlelight, all on top of a mirrored charger that ran the length of the table. In addition, votive candles were hung from the ceiling of the summer living room. The result was romantic and breathtaking… Jill Gordon flawlessly executed the event and made sure everything came together just as Amanda and Jason expected.
The grounds were gorgeous to photograph with a great back drop with the sculptures and landscape. It’s always a pleasure to be part of such an intimate affair and be able to capture portraits of every single person and so many great moments.
