Philip Treacy for Valentino – spring’s pièce de résistance

Why hello, March. You’re quite chilly and grouchy this fine NYC morning, but underneath it all, I know your style. You’re a softie.
Give or take a couple of weeks and you’ll warm up to us… You’ll grace us with some sun, reintroduce us to cute flirty dresses and soft ethereal layers, and before long, you will hardly be able contain yourself. And then you, dear March, will gift us with the creme de la creme of season-changing fabulosity- the open toe shoe. And yes, I’ve been waiting – and for good reason.
Several months ago, the sadists who control Paris Fashion Week really pulled a number on me. There I was, layering up and awaiting winter paleness, while Valentino’s models sashayed down the runway flaunting their featherweight frocks. My eyes trickled down to the models’ feet, only to be hit by the grande pièce de résistance- elegantly embroidered tulle and lace sculptures by way of famed milliner Philip Treacy .
And yes, dear friends and brides, these confections of pure fashion have finally arrived in boutiques.
Philip Treacy for Valentino – spring’s pièce de résistance To call these “shoes” would be a sin. I cannot begin to imagine how gorgeous a bride would look with these layers of luscious lace wrapping up around her ankles and peeking out from beneath her gown. They’re divine – and with many brides splurging once again on luxurious designer gowns, I cannot think of a better piece to not only compliment, but complete the look.
Philip Treacy for Valentino – spring’s pièce de résistance Of course, this is high fashion, so nothing comes cheap, though most fashionistas would be prudent to focus on scoring the collaged styles above, which may be purchased at Valentino boutiques and fine retailers within the designer’s standard price range {the strappy confection on the lower left is listed at $795 at Colette }.
Then again, those looking for a true investment- and by that I mean ogle, caress and do not wear investment- can own Treacy’s grande dame, the elegant court shoe immediately above, for a staggering $6,250. {Sorry to tease ladies, but I just had to throw it in}.
Philip Treacy for Valentino – spring’s pièce de résistance All in, Philip Treacy’s sculptural tulle shoes have incited my Spring Fever… They create a perfect cocktail of sophisticated glamour and edginess, while sparking chic, of-the-moment style for any city bride. Which are your favorites?

net-a-porter wedding preview event

This past week, I had the pleasure of attending an exclusive preview of Net-a-Porter’s recently relaunched wedding boutique. It was a wonderfully intimate gathering at The Surrey, and a feast for the eyes of any fashion lover, with gorgeous frocks from Temperley London , Lanvin and Chloe at every corner.

net-a-porter wedding preview event {dress, Jason Wu; jacket, Adam}
Net-a-Porter’s bridal boutique developed off the coattails of some stellar sales… Last Spring, the London-based brand had the ingenious idea of recreating Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic Vivienne Westwood wedding dress from the Sex and the City movie, and selling it online as part of Westwood’s Gold Collection. Despite its $10,000 price tag {and a terrible economy}, the dress sold out in record time. And like any opportunistic retailer, Net-a-Porter knew they were onto something.

Banking on their past success, Net-a-Porter decided to roll out an expanded assortment of high-fashion inspired wedding dresses, shoes and accessories for Spring 2010. Intent on bringing more brides through the site and down the aisle, they showed us some of the best of the season… And I do think the chic city bride will be hooked.
net-a-porter wedding preview event According to Sasha Sorokin, Net-a-Porter’s Senior Buyer of Ready-to-Wear, online shopping might be the best bet for the fashionista bride. No pushy bridal salespeople, no countless fittings, and no searching the city for an exclusive pair of Louboutins already worn by countless girlfriends on their wedding day… Just a one-stop resource of ready-to-wear fashions that seamlessly translate to bridal, and some exclusive shoes and accessories she’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere else.
net-a-porter wedding preview event During her presentation, Sorokin stressed that the wedding boutique will deliver the same level of glamour, sass and polish on which loyal Net-a-Porter customers rely, and continue the company’s practice of providing standout exclusives, such as the above bow and feather headpiece from Philip Treacy , and stunning Lanvin Blache pieces.
net-a-porter wedding preview event Everything is returnable within 14 days of receipt, and a team of stylists remain on hand for apres-wedding wardrobing for the honeymoon .
Journalistic integrity aside, I have to say they had me at honeymoon. The shop is packed with lovely trousseau goodies… Flirty Carine Gilson lingerie. Chiffon kaftans adorned with Matthew Williamson’s iconic prints. And saucy Zimmerman suits designed to turn more than just your husband’s head. In this department, their editorial eye is unwavering.
net-a-porter wedding preview event But even if that doesn’t do it for you, there’s more. Unlike traditional bridal collections with regimented seasonal offerings, Net-a-Porter’s boutique will constantly evolve with new styles throughout the Spring. The above Bottega Veneta silk and linen blend dress? Available today, and shipped via same day delivery in Manhattan and London, {in the darling little suitcase the model is holding, no less}… But next week, it may be sold through and replaced by something from a newer delivery, instantly making wedding shopping impossibly chic. And perhaps dangerously addictive.

The 2010 Wedding Party Event Recap

This past week was filled with so many fabulous events, I’m buckling down at my desk for recaps galore… beginning with one of the best of the season.
Over the weekend, I attended the Wedding Party at the Palace Hotel , hosted by The Wedding Library and Martha Stewart Weddings . The day began with tres-informative presentations by Darcy Miller and Colin Cowie , and continued with fantastic displays from many of New York City’s top wedding vendors. The 2010 Wedding Party Event Recap {Luckily, I’m not going subject you to my awful photography}… These gorgeous images come courtesy of the talented Jen Huang of Jen Huang Photography . Above is an indulgent assortment of sweets from One Girl Cookies {more on them later}…
The 2010 Wedding Party Event Recap And here is Jen Huang’s sweetly-styled booth, which showcased her work and aesthetic perfectly. I couldn’t resist adding the little shot of her signage – it’s such a testament to the attentive detail that pours out of her photographs! {And perhaps a darling little idea for a garden wedding}. Be sure to check out her photography, films and blog here .
The 2010 Wedding Party Event Recap Though all rooms were filled with fabulous talent , Anthony Luscia of Martha Stewart Weddings also brought in an enclave of the magazine’s favorite vendors, including famed Brooklyn bakeshop One Girl Cookies {top image and detail above}, Sylvia Weinstock and Matthew Robbins Design .
I admit to having a huge {design!} crush on Matthew, so it was such a treat to meet him and ogle over his gorgeous floral arrangements… Not only were they obscenely romantic and pretty, but they smelled divine. Yes, that sounds silly, but as Colin Cowie noted that morning, good design involves engaging all the senses, and Matthew’s work is truly transporting.
The 2010 Wedding Party Event Recap The morning before the show, I breakfasted at Balthazar with Cyd and Lindsy from Smock Paper {and yes, I am a Balthazar junkie, so that detail is important}. Anyway, I had the chance to chat with the ladies about their burgeoning stationery business and gorgeous letterpress designs before the show, which was quite nice. Their Syracuse-based company strikes the perfect balance: Small-town charm, big city style, and leading eco-conscious design.
Smock is available across every corner of Manhattan {i.e. the Wedding Library – of course, Kate’s Paperie , Judy Paulen Designs and The Village Invites , just to name a few}, so if you haven’t checked them out, you have no excuse – go.
The 2010 Wedding Party Event Recap From floral, to sweets and details, to well, pinatas, I could go on about each and every booth, but we’d need hours… Be sure to visit Stone Kelly Events & Floral , For Your Party and Confetti System for more on their wonderful work.
Many thanks for Claudia Hanlin and Jennifer Zabinski of The Wedding Library for such an amazing showcase of the city’s best. If you missed the event, be sure to stop by the Wedding Library’s gorgeous Upper East Side research boutique to relax, chat and peruse the portfolios of all the attendees. And of course, if you are a 2011 bride, there’s always next year…

Designer Showcase: Handle + Spout

Designer Showcase: Handle + Spout Okay, I just cannot help myself. I know everyone and their mom has written about Handle & Spout . But then I saw their work at the Wedding Party this weekend and, well… they had big, pretty bows! Cheeky, fun necklaces! Flower barrettes! And nesting dolls. {Alright, those weren’t shown, but they’re on the web site. So there}.
Designer Showcase: Handle + Spout The thing is, everything Corinne Gill and Blake Ramsey create makes me smile. As I passed by their booth, Corinne was casually stamping business cards, laughing with brides and having fun showing her pretty wares. The vibe was contagious… It was like playing dress-up all over again. And really, isn’t that what what your wedding day is {almost} all about?

The Chic Clutch Hunt Giveaway by Amanda Pearl

The Chic Clutch Hunt Giveaway by Amanda Pearl Yes, that’s right, we said giveaway… and what a fab one it is! In the last couple of weeks, Merci New York has been running a “ Chic Clutch Hunt Series ,” where we scoured the streets of Manhattan to find brides the most elusive of wedding day accessories… a polished, glamorous and modern wedding clutch.
This was not an easy task. Though each designer had a few awe-inspiring pieces, finding a high-style assortment of clutches required calls to several design houses for each segment. That is, until we came across a godsend. The equal parts chic, glamorous and refined Amanda Pearl . The Chic Clutch Hunt Giveaway by Amanda Pearl Within moments of obtaining product imagery, part three of the Chic Clutch Hunt was done, complete, écouter! Amanda’s line immediately filled all the gaps: An exotic limited-edition luxury: the Alba; an accessory worthy of Gossip Girl wardrobing: the Alessia; an affordable, yet impossibly polished option: the Luna; a brocade design with a decidedly Jackie O. panache: the Le Tout; not to mention delicious duchesse satin Roll Clutches, perfect for bridesmaids in 11 lush colors.

“Swoon” tends to be an overused word in the wedding industry, but swoon we did when we saw this line. I immediately contacted Amanda brimming with enthusiasm, and she… {wait for it}… ever so graciously offered to share the love by gifting a luxurious Le Pouf clutch to one very lucky Merci New York reader. anna miminoshvili dresses anna miminoshvili dresses Anna Miminoshvili’s beautifully structural dresses have thrown me for a loop ever since I saw a few of her pieces on Lace & Tea last month. I’ve since been perusing the Russian designer’s online portfolio and recently noticed a gem of a surprise… her beautiful assortment of wedding gown sketches {which are equally goddess-like in drape and design}. Anna hasn’t advised if she intends to go into production with the designs, but I’d love to see these fantasy-like sketches come to fruition. Go check them out!

Real Wedding Video: Lori + Michael

Before you hit play – Do you have a tissue {or twelve?}… Because even if you don’t know Lori and Michael personally, you’re going to need it.

The couple was already honeymooning in Thailand when they first saw this clip, and were so tearfully happy with the results, they immediately contacted the studio, crying with thanks and appreciation. We can see why...

If this clip isn’t testament to having an artistic videographer on hand for your wedding day, I’m not quite sure what is. The video was shot and produced by Anastasia Greenberg, wife of Michael Greenberg {owner and artistic director of Phototerra Studio }, and it’s actually her debut work! That being said, we can only imagine what she is capable of next… Enjoy.

Special thanks to mon amie Valerie Windsor , the amazingly talented Montreal-based wedding and event publicist, for sending Lori and Mike to Merci New York and all of our now-teary-eyed readers.

Chic Vendor Spotlight: poppies + posies

What happens when two creative ladies move to the Big Apple, meet by chance and share a love for design, florals and parties? Why sparks fly, of course… creativity abounds… and {lucky us!} the ever-bright and beautiful poppies & posies is born. Now a well-known event and floral design company nestled in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, owners Sierra and Juliet sat down with Merci New York to chat about their fabulous craft… Chic Vendor Spotlight: poppies + posies So tell our readers how this all began…
This is truly the smallest big city out there! At the time, Juliet was working in the product design department at Martha Stewart, I was an event coordinator, and we shared a mutual friend, so we met by chance and realized we shared so many interests. I have this funny little memory of sitting down together in this tiny wine bar in Brooklyn to have our first convo about starting an events company. It’s been really fun working beside her for the past few years and building poppies & posies together…we have shared a lot of laughs and of course a few tears too.
Chic Vendor Spotlight: poppies + posies Were you inspired by particular events or experiences?
Both of us were inspired by our childhoods, families, and most recently by this extraordinary city we live in. Juliet spent a lot of time as a child gardening with her father and I know this had a big impact on her life. My mom is an entrepreneur and I use to help out in her store as a kid. Seeing my mom build a successful business has definitely encouraged me to pursue what I love and believe that it is possible.
Lately, we have been inspired by all of the incredibly talented people and companies in this city – their work always inspires us to create unique florals and décor elements for our clients.
Chic Vendor Spotlight: poppies + posies How would you describe your aesthetic?
When we’re brainstorming ideas for a wedding design, we both draw inspiration from country gardens and vintage items. We’re like two kids in a candy store when we’re antiquing. Sometimes we go just to see what we’ll find and what ideas we might come up with from looking at all of the glass bottles, tins and crates.

What sets poppies & posies apart from the rest?
We’re very hands on. We take pride in the personal attention that Juliet and I both give to each client. 99% of the time we’re both present at all of our client meetings, we work side by side on all of the floral and event designs, and we hand make all of our décor elements whenever possible. This gives each wedding a personal touch that you might not find elsewhere.

Christine Mighion Jewelry | Merci Green

Merci New York recently chatted with eco-friendly jewelery designer Christine Mighion. We’re excited to share some of her beautiful pieces, as well as her thoughts and inspiration in this week’s Merci Green fashion feature.
Christine Mighion Jewelry | Merci Green What is Christine Mighion jewelry all about?
My jewelry brings chic, affordable, 100% recycled gold and silver fine jewelry to the environmentally conscious woman who isn’t willing to compromise her sense of fashion.

How did you begin designing? Where do you draw inspiration?
I spent many years in Hawaii and found unsurpassed beauty in the rhythm of the surf and earthy scents in the rain forest. Once I moved back to Indiana and the cold winter set in, I decided I needed a little pick-me-up for my soul and found a metalsmithing class at a local museum. When I design, I draw on many of my travel experiences. I especially enjoy using the warmth of gold, watery blue and floral colored gemstones, and organic textures.

What is the one things readers should know about Christine Mighion jewelry?
Most people don’t realize mining can contaminate drinking water and destroy pristine environments, but a very small handful of jewelry supply companies are slowly changing the industry by selling exclusively 100% recycled gold and silver. Making a choice to “go green” with your jewelry will help change the industry and our world for the better.

Where can we buy your designs?
Currently I am selling all of my jewelry online , but will begin partnering with select retailers and boutiques in the spring. I’m excited to say with the launch of the site, the jewelry has received a lot of interest. Look for it in upcoming spring issues of magazines!

We love your “Jewelry for a Cause” campaign! Tell us more!
I feel that I am truly living the life of my dreams and it keeps getting better everyday! With this realization, I felt that it was important to add more meaning to my work, so I currently have pieces to support Project Aware whose mission is to protect our marine environment and a piece dedicated to Haiti Relief with all profits going to the American Red Cross. {note from Merci: check out Christine’s necklace to support Haiti relief in Lucky Magazine here }!
