In the Mood? Kayak to Port Moody’s Rocky Point Park

Exploring new, easily accessible launch sites is often a spiritual experience for paddlers.  Of course, living in the Pacific Northwest we are extremely spoiled by the wide variety of paddling opportunities that surround us.  However, the search for short, local evening and afternoon paddle routes always looms large and without a doubt one of Vancouver’s best kept secrets is Barnet Marine Park .  Located in Burnaby, off the Barnet Highway, the area is a popular picnic and swimming area, yet often underutilized by paddlers.  Directly across from Admiralty Point, the kayak launch at Barnet Marine Park provides opportunities for adventurers to either paddle up Indian Arm, or to navigate along Burrard Inlet to Rocky Point Park in Port Moody.

During our recent outing, we decided to gear up and head to Rocky Point.  To describe this paddle as a nature escape would be a mistake as the inlet is a busy commercial, industrial and residential area. As we plied the local waters, we found ourselves intrigued by the mix of industry, nature and residential housing all coexisting in a relatively small geographic area.  We paddled by sulphur piles and an old thermal electric generating station, and marvelled at the sight of seals hauled out on log booms.

Needless to say, it was a surreal mix of industry and nature.  We noticed Cormorants making use of the docks to rest and seagulls taking advantage of the calm waters behind the oil containment booms.  We continued by the Reed Point Marina, home to the Reed Point Marine Education Centre , Pacific Wildlife Foundation and site of a major Steller Sea Lion research project.  Marine traffic was busy, and it too was a blend of commercial traffic and hobbyists.  Sailors and fishing vessels shared the waters and shipping lanes with enormous ocean going tankers.  It was certainly a leisurely paddle, and before we knew it Port Moody’s high rises were towering above us.

Rocky Point, Port Moody’s best known park, seemed a logical place to pull ashore to stretch, rejuvenate and seek out a well-deserved ice cream.  We certainly were not alone!  Breweries, restaurants, walking trails and a Skookum splash park attract young and old to this 3.8-hectare family friendly park situated along the shores of Burrard Inlet.  People watching opportunities were abundant!

Our return paddle to Barnet Marine Park and our launch site was peaceful and uneventful.  The Ironworkers Memorial Bridge loomed large in the distance and served as a beacon for us. Once again, we were struck by the contrast of nature and industry, man-made beaches, urbanisation, shipping lanes, wildlife and sand flats. As we pondered this fragile coexistence, a curious seal poked his head up out of the water and followed our kayaks for a while.  His timely visit seemed to add an exclamation point to our thoughts!

Getting There:

From Vancouver, travel east on Hastings Street. Keep left on Barnet Highway , and follow the signs for the park.

Travel Luggage Gets Highly Modular

Travel Luggage Gets Highly Modular

With the popularity of adventure oriented and general travel on the rise, outdoor companies are creating versatile luggage to cater to the highly mobile set. For Fall 2013, Both Kelty and Eagle Creek will release a set of luggage that can be expanded or even turned into more than one piece, ensuring you can get all those treasures home that you accumulated on your travels.

The impressive Eagle Creek Morphus literally morphs from one upright, polycarbonate back shell roller bag into two full size bags. Bought too much on your travels or heading out on a gear intensive trip? Simply zip off the front gear bag from the back shell to convert it into a full size backpack or shoulder bag. The Bi-Tech top shell hidden underneath this gear bag can then be pulled out to create a second, full size roller duffel bag.

Lightweight and durable, each bag is fully functional with dedicated electronics features, built in security, lockable self repairing zippers, and gear organizers. The Eagle Creek Morphus comes in two sizes: the Morphus 22 ($395) features a 48L gear bag and 47L wheeled bag, while the Morphus 30 ($470) features a large 94L gear bag and 91L wheeled bag.

Travel Luggage Gets Highly Modular

The foundation of Kelty's new travel oriented Ascender Series is an external expanding wheeled chassis with removable expanding bags and modular functionality. The Ascender 22 ($349) is a carry-on sized roller bag that expands from 40L up to 55L and even 70L, increasing your packing volume by up to 75%.

The Ascender 22 bag can be swapped out of the chassis to be replaced with either the water-resistant Ascender WR Duffel (65L) or the large Ascender Trunk (80L), enabling you to customize your luggage for various lengths of travel or gear intensive situations.

The Ascender 22, Ascender WR Duffel ($149), and Ascender Trunk ($199) all come with backpack straps, allowing you to carry these pieces like a pack, with or without the frame. All three bags feature handy organization options like a padded tablet pocket in the Ascender 22, Velcro dividers with separate gear compartment and gear racking options in the Ascender Trunk, and a coated exterior with water resistant interior compartment in the Ascender WR Duffel.

Look for these modular and versatile luggage pieces to hit the market around September 2013, just in time for all your fall and winter adventure travel plans.

Bike-camper with extendable rear pod

Tiny campers towed by bicycles have become increasingly popular the last couple of years. This extendable model was built by German bike- aficionado Stefan .

Bike-camper with extendable rear pod
It took him about a year to construct the little trailer that according to Stefan is very light. The camper is 70 cm wide and when the extendable rear pod is pulled out the camper becomes 200 cm long.

Stefan sleeps on a thin air mattress and he claims, the camper is super comfortable.

The Top 4 Places to Take Your Dog in Vancouver

The Top 4 Places to Take Your Dog in Vancouver

I can’t even begin to explain how much I’ve come to appreciate Vancouver since becoming a dog owner four years ago. Not only does it get me out of my house at least three times more than my pre-dog days, but it’s also helped me discover new scenic spots around town and make a ton of new buddies. Now that it’s spring, there are few reasons why you shouldn’t be out there enjoying the outdoors with your pup as much as possible. Here are some of my favourite spots where you can find me and my dog, Dutchie.

Coopers’ Park dog off-leash area
1020 Marinaside Cres.

Located just east of the Cambie Street bridge, this sprawling grassy, muddy field attracts a mostly local crowd from Yaletown and the condos along the seawall. Speaking of the seawall, this dog park is just along the water, which makes it the perfect place to stop for a little social time for you and your dog if you’re cruising the wall.

Pacific Spirit Regional Park

It’s easy to get lost in this park, but in a good way. Many of the trails allow dogs to be off leash, which makes your pet feel like a leader in the pack. (Be sure to check with the signs.) Located on the way to UBC, this provincial park feels miles away from the city, yet is completely accessible. A favourite spot for dogs and their owners so time your hike accordingly – there’s lots of stopping and sniffing.

Charleson Park (False Creek)
999 Charleson Street

This off-leash park is a pooch’s paradise, complete with a waterfall, grassy knolls and a spacious field. Dogs of all sizes mix and mingle here and their owners are often friendly and approachable. We’ve spent several hours at this spot, chatting with all kinds of people and their pooches.

Vanier Park
West of Maritime Museum Parking lot

While dogs aren’t generally allowed at most beaches in the city, this one is almost exclusively for furry fellows. That means the dogs that can’t resist the salty ocean water get to have their day in the sun…and sea. It’s the perfect place to take the whole family – just be sure to bring a towel as your pet is bound to emerge from this beach as a sand creature.

Sensoria Smart Sock Fitness Tracker

Sensoria Smart Sock Fitness Tracker

Ever think a pair of socks could help you achieve your fitness goals? Now they can. Sensoria is using the latest in textile and cell phone technology to not only track how hard you are working out each time, but also how well you actually exercise.

The Sensoria Fitness tracker system is made up of a pair of Smart Socks, an electronic Anklet that magnetically attaches to the cuff of your sock, and a mobile application. To gather accurate step, altitude, calories burned, and other data, Sensoria combines an altimeter and accelerometer technology with a slew of textile sensors positioned under your foot.

The sensor filled socks are comfortable, washable, and designed for runners. Smart fabric sensors send pressure data to the Sensoria Anklet which then uploads data wirelessly (Bluetooth Low Energy) either via your computer or through your smartphone when you are outside.

Workouts can be tailored to match the type of terrain, your individual foot strike, posture, and even desired cadence or stride length. Audio cues will let you know when you fall out of the ranges you set for each parameter. For example, the textile sensors in the socks can detect in real time where you land on your foot, delivering audio cues to let you know that you are heel striking or running too far forward on your feet.

Sensoria Smart Sock Fitness Tracker

After your workout, you'll be able to analyze in detail what you have done well, for how long, and what action you can take to get to the next level. All this data can be shared with your friends and family is you so desire.

The Sensoria Anklet comes in four different colors (black, white, pink, and light blue) to match your outfit or mood for the day. The company is currently taking pre-orders over on Indiegogo. For $119, you can be one of the first to test out the Sensoria Fitness tracker system , which includes one pair of Smart Socks, the Anklet in a color of your choice, and smartphone app (iPhone or Android).

Shea’s Wedding Week Part 2 // Details

Hi Bridal Babes! It’s day number 2 of my wedding week here on Something Turquoise and I’m excited to showcase all of our gorgeous wedding details… and I hope you enjoyed my highlight film from yesterday! Having a backyard wedding, meant we had to get creative and personal with all our details to keep the look and feel we were aiming for. We wanted a twinkle-lit backyard cocktail party vibe with delicious, easy food, drinks and music, while still feeling at home in the backyard {i.e. not super formal, more like a fab party}. The weekend began with rain, lots of it… and not just a shower or two, but an east coast hurricane kind of rain. Therefore, our plan of having tables in the backyard for our reception had to be adjusted on the fly! Thankfully, the home had a covered back porch that we were able to put all of our tables beneath still keeping a cocktail party/cozy backyard vibe. During the wedding process, our biggest worry or concern was weather. When you plan a fully outdoor wedding, it’s definitely something you worry about! A word of advice now that I’m safely on the other side, relax and just enjoy what happens! Not even a little {or a lot} of rain can ruin such a beautiful day. You just have to work with what you have, move your tables, grab some darling umbrellas, drink champagne, kiss your groom and have a blast! Now.. onto the pretty details!

Our Ceremony

For our front porch ceremony, we wanted to keep it really simple. The home is gorgeous as is and therefore we didn’t want to overdo it. We used a dreamy eucalyptus garland with blush ribbon hanging above us with twinkle lights strung in for the ceremony and we also strung twinkle lights up the banisters and topiaries and used some plants up the steps to keep everything really lush and easy. Our ceremony seating was open {no sides} and we used a large chalkboard sign draped in eucalyptus to let our guests know to pick a seat, not a side! For our aisle, Jen made us a gorgeous sign { find the DIY here! } that tied off the aisle and darling chair tags that reserved our families front row seats, yet another one of Jen’s amazing DIY wedding creations that you can find here! We we’re so thankful for Jen’s amazing projects and the fun we had collaborating on so many creative DIY’s!

Our Reception

Our reception began directly after the ceremony in the backyard. Even with all of the rain and cold weather for early October, can I just say, it was beautiful. We hung twinkle lights from tree to tree in the backyard and lit lanterns and candles throughout. It was the perfect twinkle lit reception. We wanted to include lots of personalized details to make everything really feel like us. We included our ‘S’ initial in a few different ways, as well as a couple of my favorite Foiled Prints and engagement photos taken in the same backyard thanks to our favorite photog, Shots by Cheyenne . It made each corner and table really personal to us. It was amazing seeing all of these ideas and Pinterest finds finally come to life! When first walking into the reception, guests were greeted with our welcome table featuring our DIY guest book pumpkin + sign {idea from Something Turquoise !}, honeyfund frame {another ST idea !} and a date night jar to keep everything fun + interactive when they first walked in! We also had our really fun Team Bride + Team Groom buttons {that Jen so thoughtfully made us in her DIY here! } that our guests LOVED. They could wear their pins throughout the wedding and see how everyone knew us! I really loved that we included a child and current photo as it was fun to see our family wearing childhood picture pins! Such a great icebreaker for everyone attending.

Centerpieces

For our table centerpieces, we used collected vases, small lanterns, glassware {and more pickle jars than you’d care to know!} and set them in random combinations on each table that included loose flowers, eucalyptus and candles on blush tablecloths. Which by the way, I’m in love with! We didn’t want white and thankfully we didn’t for the rain, but I love how these kept everything looking warm! We really wanted everything to feel like a boho-chic cocktail party and really loved how the silver, gold and glass glassware and vases really brought the look and feel to life! We didn’t hire a wedding coordinator since I wanted to do-it-all-myself, but we did hire the lovely Elizabeth, from Stockroom Vintage who is an event stylist and it was money well spent. She did a fabulous job decorating, putting everything together and hand lettering all of our details. She really helped bring our vision to life and she since had the reins, I could really relax while I was getting ready!

Drink + Dessert Tables

For our drink and dessert tables, we made kraft paper ‘tablecloths’ and were able to write some fun details on them! I loved this idea as it added a little more whimsy to our tables! Jen loved it too, and is actually going to share a DIY for this project on Friday – so stay tuned, you’ll love it! To keep everything easy, we separated each table by drinks, dinner + desserts. For our drink table, we had everything self-served including red + white wine, lemon water, sweet tea and soft drinks. For our dinner table, we featured a super fun taco bar with all of the fixings, which was easy, fun + delicious! Lastly, our gorgeous dessert table. Instead of the traditional, large tiered cake we took a different approach. A gracious family friend baked our cut cake so we could still traditionally cut the cake, without such an expensive cost! To still include dessert, we purchased four variations of cookies and filled up the cookie jars! This was adorable and an easy dessert for outside + easy for guests to grab throughout the evening.

Twinkle Lights!

After the sun set, the twinkle lights we’re in full effect! The house looked beautiful and we danced together as Husband + Wife! Stop by tomorrow to see our full wedding feature! I’m so excited to share our favorite moments from the big day!

Traditional Bride Kath is Picking, Planning and Paying

Paying for a wedding is one of the hardest things to do as a couple. You need to make sure you are on the same page when it comes time to how much you are willing to spend. Most people have no clue about prices and then it’s a very scary thought! How do we pay for this! Today our Traditional Bride Kath is talking about how she has made her decisions and how getting a second income has helped her pay for her wedding.

So here we are, 2016! 9 months til I walk down the aisle! When I opened that tiny box containing my very sparkly future on Christmas Eve 2013, the days, weeks and months seemed to roll ahead forever!! But nope… here it is. And so the panic begins!!
We did nothing for the first year!! In all honesty, having been together the best part of 10 years (with a couple of years intermission!!) we weren’t in any rush, and financially, we knew that on my basic admin wage and The Manfriend’s intermittent cheffing pay packages, we were unlikely to be able to afford the wedding of our (read: “my”) dreams for a long while yet anyway. Or so we thought… Traditional Bride Kath is Picking, Planning and Paying
As if by fate, a friend got in touch with me a month after our engagement, and showed me a business opportunity whereby I could earn some extra cash in my spare time, from the comfort of my couch, with nothing but an internet connection. This was welcomed with open arms by the lazy devil on my shoulder, and I became the owner of my own health and lifestyle business almost overnight! Fast forward til today, we have deposits down on everything, as well as savings, meaning we could essentially pay the whole thing off now. But we are still watching the purse-strings and it doesn’t mean we haven’t had to make some sacrifices! So this installment is all about the P’s… Picking, Planning and Paying those Pennies!

Despite having a modest upbringing, I’ve got pretty expensive taste. Not by choice, believe me, I’ve tried to change, but the lazy devil I just mentioned also likes to live beyond his means, and I’m fighting a losing battle! Show me a page of shoes in a magazine and I will fall in love with the only pair that cost £200!! Traditional Bride Kath is Picking, Planning and Paying

So you can imagine shopping for The Dress… I tried on, no word of a lie, approximately 19 gowns in about 3 hours; long, short, fitted, poofy, fishtail, princess, white, cream, sleeved and non-sleeved, lace, satin, every style and shade going, without checking any prices, truly following my heart (also known as the lazy extravagant devil) and what did my heart choose? The only dress that was over a grand. Typical.
Boom, there go my chair covers!!

And it was the same with the photographer!
I scoured portfolios, studied styles, filters, poses and various packages, then in a wedding fayre, I just so happened to glance up at one picture on display of a bride looking up at her dad making a speech. The love emanating from that one picture took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes. I looked at the chap responsible for the pic, deep in conversation with another couple, and swiped his card, booking him in my heart before I even checked his prices. Best part of 2 grand gone there, in a heartbeat, literally! Traditional Bride Kath is Picking, Planning and Paying Photo Credit: Martin Ellard

Bye bye photobooth!! And I had REALLY wanted a photobooth. I wanted Marryoke. I wanted my friends and loved ones to crease themselves laughing at silly pictures of colourful wigs and goofy glasses, but was that really more important than The Manfriend and I having an album of pictures so perfect that they make our hearts burst with love when we look back at them in ten, twenty, fifty years…? We decided not. But of course, I still want my friends and loved ones to wear silly wigs and goofy glasses, so as per the advice of the creative, penny-pinching angel on my other shoulder; I’m going to make a DIY photobooth of my own, with a strung-up cardboard frame, a cheap box of props, and a few disposable cameras!

Traditional Bride Kath is Picking, Planning and Paying But of course, the biggest expense for most weddings is the venue. Yes, I could have booked my village church. Yes I could have had the party anywhere. But, walking up to the Oxwich Bay Hotel down the Gower on a crisp winter’s night, watching the palm trees dancing in front of the garden lights and being able to hear the waves tickling the shoreline in the darkness beyond those beautiful stone walls, the goose pimples that flickered all over my body from top to toe can’t be beaten by a budget!!
Besides, I wasn’t fussed about having a honeymoon anyway!! (Nb, this is a joke. We are still working on this!!)

The point I’m trying to make is, you’re only going to do this once, if you want something special, go for it!! Don’t ever forget the most important P of all… Priorities!!

Traditional Bride Kath is Picking, Planning and Paying I’m sure we can all relate to this. Paying for a wedding is one of the hardest things we as a couple had had to do. its about making sacrifices and saving. I can totally understand where Kath is coming from when she talks about priorities. ~ Kate

Simple and Rustic Wedding on Family Farm

Kim and Shane chose to have their simple and rustic wedding at Shane's family farm. In his family for six generations, the expansive property was the perfect place to celebrate their marriage with close friends and family. Upon arrival, guests were ushered to the ceremony on a John Deer tractor and walked through barn doors to an open field and blanket covered hay bales for seating. The couple also did their first look in front of those amazing wooden doors.

After the ceremony, guests were ushered into a charming reception, decorated with mason jars filled with wildflowers, burlap and lace table runners and other wooden details. "The reception was thoughtfully decorated with personal touches and whimsical details, making it a romantic, but laid back environment," said their photographer, Andrea Nigh . The evening ended with a bang with an impressive fireworks display for the couple and their guests.
