Festivities in Red, White and Blue - Happy Memorial Day!

Happy Memorial Day, everyone! I couldn't resist taking the opportunity to whip out a festive inspiration board for the occasion. Did you know that originally, Memorial Day was called, "Decoration Day?" In a non-wedding decor kind of way, of course. As we all (should) know, Memorial Day exists in order to honor those who have died in our nation's service.

I thought that this quote by Martin Luther King, Jr. was a nice one for today...

"We will not build a peaceful world by following a negative path. It is not enough to say we must not wage war. It is necessary to love peace and sacrifice for it. We must concentrate not merely on the negative expulsion of war but on the positive affirmation of peace. We must see that peace represents a sweeter music, a cosmic melody, that is far superior to the discords of war. Somehow, we must transform the dynamics of the world power struggle from the negative nuclear arms race, which no one can win, to a positive contest to harness humanity's creative genius for the purpose of making peace and prosperity a reality for all the nations of the world. In short, we must shift the arms race into a peace race. If we have a will - and determination - to mount such a peace offensive, we will unlock hitherto tightly sealed doors of hope and transform our imminent cosmic elegy into a psalm of creative fulfillment."

Simply Rustic, DIY Wedding

Have I ever mentioned that before Dale and I decided on a destination wedding, I was dead-set on having a Fall wedding? There were a few reasons for my determination...one of which was the weather. If you happen to live in Southern California like I do, then you know that the best weather of the year usually isn't in the spring or summertime. It's the early Fall. September and the beginning of October is my favorite time of year here in Los Angeles. Not too hot, rarely cold and lots of clear skies. It is, in my opinion, the most predictable and reliable time of year for great weather, and I always knew that I wanted an outdoor wedding. While I don't regret my own wedding for a second, I do wonder what our day would have been like if we had gotten married here in the Fall. It probably would have been a lot like today's wedding! Which is why I was so drawn to it, of course ;)

Last Fall, Erin and Andrew welcomed 140 guests to their warm, simply rustic Fall wedding held at a family friend's beautiful private residence near the beach. "Residence" is probably the wrong word though, in my opinion...more like "mansion"! I actually thought it was a hotel at first! The entire property and rustic Fall wedding was wonderfully captured by talented photographer Sia McDonald . Along with the expert guidance of Event Designer Jennifer Janzen of MAP Events , Erin made sure that each and every one of their guests "...felt like they were part of a special event from the moment they stepped onto the property." An exemplary bride in pretty much anyone's book, Erin embraced her love of design, and was extremely resourceful and detail-oriented throughout the planning process. She kept an eye out for inspirational pieces at garage sales and flea markets, while working with family and friends to make sure every single detail was just right. Erin wanted lots of family photos on display to celebrate both her and Andrew's pasts, and a photo booth to capture all of the memories from the day. Wooden lanterns filled with flowers lined the pathways, while the entire reception area was illuminated with lights strung from the surrounding trees.

Erin had a hefty list of DIY projects, too! All of the save the dates, wedding invitations, menus and seating cards were created by Erin and printed on recycled paper at the Greener Printer . As far as the wedding decor, DIY details included the mirrored seating chart, clear candleholder globes purchased from CB2 and filled with flowers for ceremony, the directional signpost and wooden table numbers (that Erin's father carved out of wood left in a neighbor's front yard), to name a few.

In my opinion, it's pretty much impossible not to admire the creative mix of flowers that made up the bride's and bridesmaids' bouquets, and reception centerpieces, arranged by Christine Cater . The wedding was decorated with a vibrant, unexpected mix of hydrangeas, dahlias, garden roses and ranunculus in a range of Fall jewel tones. A rather subtle addition of fresh fruit to the reception table centerpieces gave the outdoor dining area a warmer, slightly rustic look and feel. Guests were seated at long banquet style tables topped with olive green linens, placed in the front yard of the property. After dinner, dancing, cocktails and lots of cake soon followed in the backyard into the late evening.

After the wedding, Erin and Andrew traveled to Aruba for their honeymoon (if you can't tell, my voice is dripping with envy right now), which seems only fitting, as the couple first began dating while on a graduation trip to Australia, and were later engaged on a family trip to Hawaii!Let's hope that it's only the beginning of a long life of travels together :)

Once Upon A Bow and A Bow Tie

Once upon a bow and bow tie. Bows are back! An elegant and fun wedding trend is the bow! I love the modern look of vera wang wedding dresses, especially this one and this fabulous bow. It screams sophistication. And it is even more amazing when matched with a fun bow tie. And the best part, the bow tie is DIY.

Butterfly Wedding! Say Yes to the Butterfly Wedding Dress

Butterfly Wedding! This year Butterflies are in. Instead of floral accents many bridal dresses today are draped in butterflies. If you are planning a Butterfly wedding why not start with the dress.

Butterfly Wedding! Say Yes to the Butterfly Wedding Dressbutterfly weddingThese two butterfly wedding dresses are as playful as they are whimsical. The one on the left is from Alfred Angelo from his Disney Fairy Tale weddings collection. It was inspired by princess Rapunzel from the movie Tangled.

The butterfly wedding dress on the right is from BHLDN.  And it is kinda awesome.

I like unique wedding ideas and fun wedding themes and butterflies can work as both. There is something about the transformation of the butterfly and the realization of what it has become that speaks to couples everywhere. That, and butterflies are pretty.

If a butterfly wedding theme is up your alley, here are some butterfly wedding cakes and butterfly wedding decorations that are sure to please. Today you can find everything with butterflies on them. I even found butterfly wedding rings .

One of my favorite quotes is butterfly inspired, "If there was no change there'd be no butterflies." unknown.

What do you think would you say yes to the butterfly dress?

Portfolio: Editorial Shoot for Preston + Olivia Accessories

Portfolio: Editorial Shoot for Preston + Olivia Accessories What’s that, you say? You’re looking for an adorable new accessory line for both yourself and your groom? Well lovelies, today you are in luck. If you haven’t already seen it here , today we’re sharing a peek of the amazing Preston and Olivia collection from designer Dara Kent-Cobb. I had the pure pleasure of styling this campaign and it was beyond fun. Take a peek! Portfolio: Editorial Shoot for Preston + Olivia Accessories Portfolio: Editorial Shoot for Preston + Olivia Accessories Portfolio: Editorial Shoot for Preston + Olivia Accessories Vendor List
Client: Preston and Olivia
Photography: Trent Bailey Photography
Styling: Merci New York
Makeup: Facetime Beauty Concierge
Flowers: Kat Flower
Suiting: Billy Reid
Venue: The Green Building
Wardrobe from J. Crew, Merci’s kit, H&M and Gabriella New York .

There’s truly nothing I love more than styling. Pairing pattern and texture and color – unexpectedly arranging pretty things and making them shine in a new way – it’s exhilarating to me!
Prop and fashion styling are generally exclusive entities, so when my dear friends Dara and Trent Cobb asked me to concept both prop and fashion styling for Dara’s stunning first
Preston and Olivia collection, I jumped {and jumped, and jumped!} at the chance. It was fun to work on one project and cohesively gel prop and fashion styling to accentuate the amazing Preston and Olivia aesthetic. But before I go even further, here’s a bit from the designer herself…

From the Designer, Dara Kent-Cobb:

“For this first collection, I wanted the focus to be about the fabrics and textures for each piece, all while keeping each item timeless. I referred back to the basics of millinery and the techniques I learned in classes at FIT . As for inspiration for each piece, I looked at vintage hats and embellishments found in flea markets, antique shops, and my grandmother’s cedar chest (a favorite spot of mine to visit as a child). This collection is filled with nostalgia for the place I left behind (my home state of Louisiana) but is only a preview for the wonderful things that are to come for Preston & Olivia.”

Don’t you love it?! The line is just so darn fun. When styling this campaign, the vintage “found” objects in muted blues and mustard yellows look so fresh against the softer, pastel elements to me… The goal was to use these “once old, now new again” colors and textures as a catalyst to showcase the P&O product. Dara’s gorgeous accessories {for both him and her} popped against all the varied texture and color, and shone through as both fresh and nostalgic.

To learn more about the gorgeous Preston and Olivia collection, visit the P&O Web site , catch Dara on her blog , and be sure to check out this post where Dara explains her collection inspiration in {cute and fun!} detail. And oh yes- don’t forget enter the Preston and Olivia giveaway on 100 Layer Cake , too!

Pretty in Pink, Pink Wedding Dresses

Pretty in Pink, Pink Wedding Dresses pink wedding dressesPretty in Pink, Pink Wedding Dresses. I heart this soft tinted wedding dress trend. This year tinted wedding dresses are in! Pink wedding dresses or blush color wedding gowns are turning up everywhere.

Reese Witherspoon just recently choose a pink wedding dress for her day. The suble hint of pink is so romantic and beautiful. It also pairs well with pale bridesmaid dresses , such as white, ivory or even pink bridesmaid dresses.

Want more pink? Martha Stewart Weddings does a post on pink wedding dress designers .  Where you can see the latest pink styles by top designers. I think we are going to see even more colorful wedding dresses hitting the runways.

You can see more pink wedding dresses on Once Wed as well as the rest of this pretty pink photo shoot by Elizabeth Messina.

And if you love pink why stop at the dress? Here is a post from A wedding Cake Blog on pink wedding cakes and even pink wedding rings from InStyle ! I'm not sure if I'd go pink crazy but there is something whimsical about the pink bridal gown trend.

What do you think pretty in pink?

Vavavoom Vintage Wedding Dresses

Vavavoom Vintage Wedding Dresses

source: Catherine Hall

Vavavoom Vintage Wedding Dresses. The above picture is amazing for so many reasons, the picnic wedding , the vintage wedding gown, the lace details, the long pearl necklace. I could go on and on.

There is something so very girly about a vintage wedding dress. I remember being a kid and playing dress up with grandmother's wedding gown. I didn't know it at the time but it was the start of my love for all things vintage.

The trouble with vintage wedding dresses is they are hard to find. And they usually involve a fair bit of leg work. If you are looking for vintage clothing, vintage wedding dresses, or even a vintage engagement ring I would start with Ebay.

Stephanie James Couture also has a selection of vintage inspired wedding dresses. Modest Couture also carries retro wedding dresses and tea length wedding dresses with a fun flirty feel.

Couture Allure is a place you can find actual vintage wedding gowns and informal wedding dresses too. As is Timeless Vixen .

Any other good places to find vintage or vintage inspired wedding dresses?

All Hail Pale Bridesmaid Dresses!!

All Hail Pale Bridesmaid Dresses!! An undeniable trend for 2011 are pale bridesmaid dresses . These light bridesmaid dresses are often the same or a few shades different from the bride. Bridesmaids Dresses everywhere are turning up in colors that were a short while ago only considered for brides. Bridesmaid dresses in neutral colors, ivory, and even white add a softer more subtle distinction between the bride and her girls, a distiction less prononced but not less beautiful.

All Hail Pale Bridesmaid Dresses!!

All Hail Pale Bridesmaid Dresses!!

These light bridesmaid dresses are all the rage and not just for bridesmaids, light prom dresses, and neutral colors clothing are very trendy right now. Pale bridesmaid dresses also work well to offset brides who choose light wedding dresses with a hint of color.

Love this trend. I find it so romantic and sweet.  You?

Bridesmaids Blog Tour – Merci New York Shares a Sneak Peek!

Last week, Universal Pictures asked the Merci New York staff to be part of a fun blog tour, and preview the hilarious film, Bridesmaids . I’m not gonna lie, we already had the May 13th release date marked on our calendars {yea, we were that excited to see the film!}, so getting a sneak peek was a huge treat….
Bridesmaids Blog Tour – Merci New York Shares a Sneak Peek! We knew Judd Apatow {Knocked Up, Superbad}, would not disappoint… And we knew that the killer cast would have us on the floor laughing. But I kinda have a major confession to share with you… All my best girlfriends are unmarried. So while I’ve been “The Bride,” gone on a TON of bachelorette parties for good girlfriends, and styled several bridesmaid looks for clients, I actually have yet to shimmy into a terrible taffeta dress myself! Seeing Bridesmaids made me really appreciate all my own bridesmaids, and all the crazy things us brides put them through….
Bridesmaids Blog Tour – Merci New York Shares a Sneak Peek! The moment Lillian {Maya Rudolph} shares “The Big News” with bestie Annie {Kristin Wiig, who also co-wrote the film}, the silliness begins to spiral and the laughs unroll. But the very real thing about Bridesmaids is that Lillian definitely wears those “bride goggles” we’re all guilty of donning during wedding planning. So my “too little too late realization”? Before you send a big, sugary dress-shaped cookie asking your friends to be your bridesmaids, at least try consider their personal situation. Being a bridesmaid is kinda a big deal – it’s an honor, but also a financial responsibility. If a good friend is in a personal spot where being a bridesmaid can be tough, offer sweet alternatives for her {perhaps she doesn’t plan the shower, but she has a special speech or ceremony reading}. We’re all guilty of a *little* selfishness during wedding planning {let’s be honest}, but reel it in to your primping and preening, and not your relationships with your best friends!
Bridesmaids Blog Tour – Merci New York Shares a Sneak Peek! Another amazing thing this “once a bride, never a bridesmaid” loved about Bridesmaids , was the cast of characters – and really, what wedding party isn’t a cast of characters?! From your sister, to your roommate, your sorority friends, after-college besties and family members you rarely see but always love, you gotta admit that your bridesmaids are a mixed lot of loved ones. They all care tons about you, but might not know a thing about each other – which is exactly what is so fabulous about it. A lot of brides try to force instant friendships with their girls – sit back and let it happen. Your “Shopping Buddy at Bergdorf” and your “Go-to for a Beer at the Frying Pan” are not one in the same person – but watching them bond through your wedding process is pretty cool. Don’t expect seamless friendships, but expect your girls are there to celebrate with you and have fun together…
I loved the hilarious bond made between Annie and her sister-in-law to be, Megan {Melissa McCarthy}, over some tres-over-the-top shower favors that have me giggling laughing every time I think of them. Don’t want to spoil it – so see the movie and get back to us!
Bridesmaids Blog Tour – Merci New York Shares a Sneak Peek! I hope you didn’t think I’d finish this post without taking about my favorite topic, fashion, did you?! On the first stop of the Bridesmaids blog tour, the gals at Borrowed and Bleu dug deeply into this topic with some fab fashion tips, so swing by there for sure… But as a bride who {before beginning this biz, mind you} actually had my bridesmaids in matching bright pink dresses with light pink bows {le sigh}, I loved the standoff scene with Annie and ever-pretty-and-perfect Helen {Rose Byrne}. While money may be no object to the wealthy Rose {whose perfect body makes this expensive mauve atrocity look good}, the rest of Lillian’s bridesmaids had different body types and budgets to consider.
Bridesmaids Blog Tour – Merci New York Shares a Sneak Peek! If I were to do it all again, I would suggest a line like Amsale to my bridesmaids. Their popular crinkle chiffon fabric are GORG! They come in over 20 silhouettes and a range of coordinating colors, and somehow they are all under $300. Of course, the same amount of shared hilarity wouldn’t ensue, {nor would it look as funny when one of my girls face planted herself mid-photos in the slippery grass} but hey – this is all hindsight 20-20, right? Anyways, just wait until you see all the bridesmaid dress options in the movie!
Bridesmaids Blog Tour – Merci New York Shares a Sneak Peek! Beyond being wildly entertaining and totally hilarious, watching Bridesmaids as a bride, blogger and stylist who {shh!} still has not been a bridesmaid, gave me a totally new perspective on the other side of the bridal party. Come May 13th, you must round up your girls and treat them to this movie. It’s more than “The Hangover for Girls” – as my husband and guy friends have predicted – it’s a comedy classic in and of itself – and I’m already excited to see it again!

About the film:
This spring, producer Judd Apatow {Knocked Up, Superbad} and director Paul Feig {creator of Freaks and Geeks} invite you to experience Bridesmaids . Kristen Wiig leads the cast as Annie, a maid of honor whose life unravels as she leads her best friend, Lillian {Maya Rudolph}, and a group of colorful bridesmaids {Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper} on a wild ride down the road to matrimony.

Annie’s life is a mess. But when she finds out her lifetime best friend is engaged, she simply must serve as Lillian’s maid of honor. Though lovelorn and broke, Annie bluffs her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals. With one chance to get it perfect, she’ll show Lillian and her bridesmaids just how far you’ll go for someone you love.

p.s. – For the next stop on the Bridesmaids blog tour, be sure to visit Forget Me Knot Weddings , tomorrow.

xx,

This is a sponsored post brought to you by Universal Pictures’ Bridesmaids, in theaters May 13. Photos courtesy of Universal Pictures.

Say it with Wedding Signs!

Say it with Wedding Signs!  wedding-signsSay it with Wedding Signs! The Wedding sign has come a long way. Wedding signage once thougth of only to direct guests now has a life of its own. True, wedding signs, and wedding signs with arrows, or wedding receptions signs can be useful. You do need to make sure your guests know where to go. But outside of being 'functional' wedding signs should also be fun.

Today wedding signs are often used as wedding picture props , for table numbers, even as guest books. If you'd like to check out more fun wedding signs check out this post on DIY wedding signs, including wooden wedding signs . I absolutely love DIY wedding signage!

This adorable picture has each ringbearer holding a sign with the words from here comes the bride. And there are six of them! It is buckets of cute. I wonder if they played the music in the background too? Bravo for being different.
