Annapolis Engagement Session | Photography by Susie

Today’s sweet engagement session is straight from the brick streets and sunset-filled piers of Annapolis! We absolutely love the casual feel to this shoot, so true to the couple’s personalities, and we knew it would be a perfect fit for Bayside Bride! The talented work of Photography by Susie will take it from here:

“Emily and Carlton have lived within 10 minutes of each other for years, but didn’t know the other existed. It took the internet to get them to meet, and one reason Emily knew she wanted to go out with Carlton because he had such a cool name.”

And if you love sweet local stories, continue reading below!

Story Continued: Carlton is a hard-working man. He splits his six working days between real estate, bar-tending at Davis’, and serving at the Chart House. On his single day off, he and Emily relax in Annapolis. But more than that, you get the sense that their relationship itself is where they go to relax. I’ve hardly been around a couple that’s as comfortable around one another as Emily and Carlton. They said they were nervous about the shoot, so they decided in advance to just have as much fun as possible… we saw all fun and no nervousness, so mission accomplished on that front.

We had a long list of significant places we wanted to stop by, so we had to edit a bit, but we still managed to make it to several of the significant spots in Annapolis. First stop was Luna Blu, where Emily and Carlton had their first date… and where Emily *knew* within minutes that she could stop dating and start a life-long relationship. The next stop was the Charthouse Restaurant, where they had their 2nd date, and Carlton now works. We couldn’t do the session without hitting Davis’ Pub, where Carlton also works, so that was our 3rd stop. Both of the restaurants we went to, Emily & Carlton were warmly greeted by many friends and co-workers. And finally, we finished up by the wharf in Annapolis, which is so lovely at sunset!

Rustic Fall Wedding with Creative DIY Ideas

Here's a country style fall wedding that will seriously knock your socks off. Mainly because it looks like it was professionally done, yet there are absolutely no professional wedding planners or coordinators involved! I swear! Just a super creative bride with talented and supportive friends and family to help out. Oh, and a fabulous photographer, of course. Andrea Nigh Photography did an amazing job of capturing all of the great details, as well as the bridal party and the couple in such a beautiful fall setting. It really is a stunning, well executed wedding from the looks of it, and I'm really excited to share it with you. So excited, I accidentally posted the photos the other day (so if they look a little familiar, you know why...)

Kylie and Stephen were married last fall at a private residence in Macks Creek, Missouri. All of the couple's 130 guests were seated outside for the ceremony on top of square bales of hay, covered in quilts lent by friends and family. The bride walked down the aisle in a beautiful strapless lace gown and brown leather cowboy boots, wearing her grandmother's original 1940s engagement ring, her great grandmother's wedding band, and a pearl necklace and pearl bracelet, each borrowed from two of her bridesmaids. The flowers only added warmth to this rustic wedding, in warmer fall shades of orange and yellow, often mixed with cooler lavender florals. Kylie wanted all of the bouquets to be wrapped with burlap and twine, and fastened with buttons, and simple, fresh herbs were used for the groomsmen boutonnieres.

At the ceremony, there was an amazing display using enormous round bales of hay, with the couple's moss covered monogram and tall chalkboards (homemade using wood and chalk paint!) displaying all of the ceremony details in lieu of traditional paper programs. To acknowledge lost loved ones and other marriages in each of the families, there were old windows (which they got from one of their bridesmaids who recently had her windows replaced) which displayed photographs and special dates. Guests were directed to and from the ceremony and reception areas with a wooden sign made by the bride's father. "After the wedding, my dad replaced the wedding signs and put up all the towns where my brother, sister, and I live, with arrows pointing toward their direction, and then he made a sign labeled, "Home" pointing to the house. It made me tear up when I saw it coming home for Christmas," said Kylie.

There were several other DIY details, which the bride, Kylie kindly shared with me. All of the vintage glass jars and containers used for the centerpieces were borrowed from Kylie's grandmother, who had collected them over the years. Her parents live on the Niagua River, and so she chose to use one of their canoes as the gift table. Kylie's dad made all of their wooden cake stands for the dessert table, made from old cedar and oak trees. The cake stands held fifteen individual cakes of all flavors, shapes and sizes, which were all baked (with love) by the mother of the groom. Kylie and Stephen also chose to serve a special dessert they typically enjoy on the holidays called a "Dirty Maiden," which is a Norwegian dish made with roasted graham crackers, chunky applesauce and homemade whipped cream! YUM! At the end of the evening, guests left with small jars of homemade relish, made by Kylie's dad using fresh veggies from their family garden.

Another DIY detail that the bride was especially proud of? The bathrooms! "This may seem weird, but I really liked our bathrooms! We had to get porta potties, which I was nervous about...We used my dad's marquis canvas tent to cover the women's potty, and put our old antique dresser with mirror in there for the ladies to primp. Plus, we placed one of our old antique rugs on the floor with the couple of chairs. We hid the boys potty behind a couple of big round hay bales [labeled with a wooden 'His' sign]," said Kylie. Hey! Boys don't spend much time in the john, right?

Electric Summer | Strawberry Lemonade Cocktail

With the summer sunshine in full force last week, today’s May Cocktail of the Month is absolutely perfect! With the sweet and electrifying flavor of strawberries and lemonade – this Bayside refreshment is absolutely perfect for an early summer wedding!

Electric Summer | Strawberry Lemonade Cocktail Electric Summer | Strawberry Lemonade Cocktail

To give this cocktail a more successful flavor and coloring, consider sealing the cocktails up over night to chill in your refrigerator! With individually created mason jar glasses – each guest will feel special sipping on a drink created just for them!

Another wonderful idea would be to use strawberry lemonade as your 3-part mixer, for an instant pink hue and freeze bags of strawberries overnight! Then you have a delicious summer cocktail with fruity ice-cubes to keep the beverage chilled!

We’d love your suggestions for signature wedding cocktails as part of our Bayside Cocktail series! Send them our way & we’ll be sure to give you a shout out in the feature!

This sweet wedding captured by the lovely Jenna Walcott Photography is absolutely beautiful! The little waterfront community of Gibson Island is located along the Chesapeake Bay and made the perfect venue for this affair! We’ll let Jenna take it from here:

“Carolyn and Parks were married on the exclusive grounds of Gibson Island’s utopian community. Carolyn & Parks married in the chapel at St. Christopher by the Sea with a cozy and intimate gathering. This wedding boasted a quaint bayside environment full of charm – from the cottage to the golf course to the amazing private vineyard – there was no shortage of fresh variety and ambiance from start to finish!”
