Nautical Chic Destination Wedding by the Sea

I'm so excited, because I get to feature the most gorgeous wedding today! I've actually been holding onto it for awhile, because admittedly, I wasn't able to get as much information about it as I had originally hoped, but I decided to feature it anyway because I'm just so in love with it! I think that you'll agree that it's a really beautiful wedding, and personally, the colors, style, venue and just the whole feeling behind it make it a great reflection of my own personal style. I know, I know...it isn't about me =P But as I'm sure you can tell, I'm obsessed. Really!

The classic navy blue and white color palette and its beautiful seaside location down in Florida inspired me to label this destination wedding as "Nautical," while its crisp, clean lines and modern floral arrangements deem it incredibly "Chic!" I often think that the trick to making a wedding truly elegant is exercising restraint. Knowing what to showcase, and what to leave out, what to spend the time, money and effort on, and what to keep simple. From the boldly striped napkins, to the simple color palette and the classic, All-American venue, the breezy, light-filled photographs by photographer Lauren Kinsey are a perfect reflection of the entire day. As you'll soon see, Lauren did a truly incredible job of capturing not only the fabulous details, but what I imagine is the real essence behind the wedding and the newly married couple. There's something about the photos of Whitney and Paxton together that is so easy and natural.

The rather gorgeous couple, Paxton and Whitney, are from Houston, Texas, where they had originally planned on having a huge wedding with about 400 guests! But in the middle of the madness, about six months before they were set to marry, the two of them decided to get back to what their day was really about. Paxton and Whitney made the big decision to throw their original plans out the window, and instead, chose to have an intimate destination wedding in their favorite little sunshine filled town of Seaside, Florida.

"When I met with Paxton and Whitney for the first time, they told me that they didn't want everything to be about the fluff...[they] just [wanted it] to be about them joining their lives and their families together as one," said their photographer, Lauren Kinsey. The bride's father officiated the small chapel ceremony on a warm afternoon in May, and the day turned out to be exactly what Whitney and Paxton had wanted all along - simple, happy and intimate.

Chic Vendor Spotlight | Jami Saunders Photography

Chic Vendor Spotlight | Jami Saunders Photography

What do you get when you take a husband and wife with a passion for photography, art , design, New York, love {and each other}? Add a dash of philanthropic spirit a mound of talent and an endless flow of creativity and you’re left with infinitely fabulous Jami Saunders Photography . From dashing engagement shoots, stunning wedding photography, to a non-profit organization spawned from a modest collection of striking images – at Jami Saunders they love what they do and it certainly shows.
We were recently thrilled by the opportunity to pick the brains of the brilliant minds behind Jami Saunders Photography . Take a moment to get acquainted with Jami Saunders and prepare to feel delightfully inspired…

Chic Vendor Spotlight | Jami Saunders Photography

Merci: We are huge fans of Jami Saunders photography. Can you tell us about the masterminds behind the lens?
Jami: We are a husband and wife team who spend most of our waking and dreaming days talking about, thinking about, or living with any combination of photography, art, design, and love. There isen’t too much we do that is outside of that.

Chic Vendor Spotlight | Jami Saunders Photography

Merci: We heard a little rumor at Merci, that Jami Saunders Photography shares our loving obsession with New York. Please, gush away…
Jami: We spent many many years in Brooklyn and this summer we moved back into the city… and have fallen totally in love with New York all over again. I would say we are both in the honeymoon stages and basically share our relationship with this third party {New York} now! Ha! Being able to spend time with couples during their engagement shoots, their weddings, and their anniversary shoots, and sharing that love of the city with the love between people is pretty freaking cool.

Chic Vendor Spotlight | Jami Saunders Photography

Merci: Now that we’ve got that out of the way, tell us a bit about your approach to photography. What makes Jami Saunders unique?
Jami: We are modern and minimal with a hint of quirk. We make creative decisions to keep the focus on our couples, and to give them images that are timeless visual celebrations that they can look back on for years to come. We make efforts to create an environment that allows spontaneous and real moments to unfold, and then we are there to capture it. Andrew is also a modern furniture designer, and I come from a background in psychology. I think our photography speaks to that.

Merci: Why weddings?
I have been shooting professionally since 2003, but only began to focus on weddings a few years ago. I have always photographed people and children and was doing weddings more on the side than as my main focus. There is a funny attitude towards ‘wedding photographers’ within the commercial photography world and for a while I was sort of ‘secretly’ doing weddings. But once I realized, hey, I really LIKE this. I like the people, I like the connection, I like the relationship with each client. And I don’t have to be the typical ‘wedding photographer’ that one imagines. Once I realized it all so clearly, I stopped secretly shootingweddings, created an entire website and brand devoted to it, and have never looked back.

Chic Vendor Spotlight | Jami Saunders Photography

Merci: What’s it like to be one half of a husband and wife photography team?
Jami: Andrew started shooting with me not long after we met over four years ago. I really loved the perspective he brought to it. He’s a fun guy, doesn’t take things too seriously, but has an artistic eye like no other. We are starting our fourth season now. We stay in contact with our previous couple who are now having babies and growing families and it feels like a big family for us. I actually can’t believe how much sense it all seems to make now. I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Chic Vendor Spotlight | Jami Saunders Photography

Merci: Jami Saunders photographs reflect a great deal of depth and personality; What inspires the brand?
Jami: I’d say we draw inspiration from life outside of wedding photography. After all, wedding photography is about life and specifically a very particular moment that makes up our lives, the wedding day. I’m inspired by families, by relationships, by a longing glance, watering eye, a wink. I’m fascinated by these moments that make up our lives that we might not see until someone (us) captures it and records it for us to relive over and over. I feel so lucky to be invited to each wedding we photograph. It’s a very personal moment and we never take that for granted.

Chic Vendor Spotlight | Jami Saunders Photography

Merci: And in your spare time you “shoot for a good cause.” How has Jami Saunders married a passion for photography with a philanthropic penchant?
Jami: We spent our honeymoon at an orphanage in Nepal with 41 amazing children in February 2010. We said that when we came back to the States we would have a small photo show of our images taken during the trip to raise money for the orphanage. Fast forward two years later. We now have a nonprofit called Kids of Kathmandu. We have raised over $55,000 which allowed us to move all the children from a poorly preforming government school to a private school with after school tutoring.

We are currently planning our next event called The enLIGHTen Project where we will commission lighting designers to build lights that we will auction off at our event in May. Proceeds will go towards solar panels in Nepal. Kids of Kathmandu has allowed us to use our photography, design, and love of people in a different way which we are so grateful for. See a video from our latest trip there in November 2011. www.kidsofkathmandu.org

Real NYC Engagement Session | Sarah + Sasha in Brooklyn

When photographer Jeff Zorabedian sent Merci New York Sarah and Sasha’s engagement session, we were completely captivated by their youthful energy. Not only did we dig Sasha’s vintage frames and Sarah’s eclectic style, we also loved the diverse variety of shapes, textiles and understated architecture captured in this Brooklyn e-session.

But don’t take our word for it… Check out the cute couple as they gallivant around their Fort Greene ‘hood striking a pose, and making even the most mundane of New York City backdrops a perfect {and often playful} prop for their lively love story.

Engagement Shoot: A Night at the Drive-In

I'm all about the creative and one-of-a-kind this week! Well, I try to always be about those things, but with this super cool airplane wedding on Tuesday, and today's vintage drive-in engagement shoot, I feel as though it's especially true this week! ;)

Not only is the concept and props used in this engagement shoot totally adorable, but the photography is so perfect! I love the cool vintage style of the photos...the shot of the couple laying in the car with their feet out the window is definitely my favorite. Although the last series of them throwing popcorn is also cute! The talented photographer, Hollie of Lytlefoto , was inspired by Gene and Yun Jung's love of movies, and put together this amazing drive-in movie concept in an open field in Georgia for their engagement shoot. "Cozy quilts, hamburgers and shakes, vintage projectors and a sexy vintage car set the scene for love," said Hollie. I couldn't have said it better myself!

Tuesday Shoesday | Paul + Joe Raffia Wedges Summon Summer Honeymoons

Tuesday Shoesday | Paul + Joe Raffia Wedges Summon Summer Honeymoons It’s a cold February day in NYC, so for today’s Tuesday Shoesday we decided to take a break from wedding day fashion and skip ahead to the sun, fun and honeymoon wardrobe you may have neglected to think about in all your wedding planning havoc.
As fashion stylists, we love styling brides… not only for their wedding day, but also as they pack their bags for the honeymoon ahead. Today we came across these amazing Paul & Joe Patent Leather and Raffia Wedges for a client, and fell in l.o.v.e. with their vintage, flirty feel.
And how couldn’t we? Not only do they summon the style spirit of retro-chic beach bombshells, {and pair perfectly with a versatile white eyelet sundress}, but they are also on MAJOR SALE on The Outnet . And that my dears, is an amazing thing. Happy shopping!
xx,

Colin Cowie Hosts Four Valentine’s Day Weddings Atop the Empire State Building

When celebrity event planner extraordinaire {and Merci’s contributing expert } Colin Cowie decided to launch his very own bridal web site, Colin Cowie Weddings , we were thrilled, but also extremely expectant… We knew a celebratory bottle of bubbly wouldn’t suffice as a large enough launch for the lifestyle guru, and that he would clearly “go big” on his grand reveal. Needless to say, we were right.
This past Tuesday, Colin Cowie commemorated his launch by throwing four glamorous weddings… all on Valentine’s Day… and all in the legendary Empire State Building.
Of course, we knew if anyone could pull it off it was Colin, so Merci New York tagged along for the ride. We lovingly captured the behind the scenes details of San Francisco couple Angela and Lubin’s wedding. The Colin Cowie “Wings of Love” contest winners celebrated their union with a tea party themed wedding atop the legendary New York landmark. Check out the adorable couple as they tie the knot with a little help from our friend Colin and his talented team…

Colin Cowie Hosts Four Valentine’s Day Weddings Atop the Empire State Building

Merci: Colin, thanks for having us! Can you tell us a bit about today’s events?

Colin Cowie: This is a very exciting day for us! We’re making history for several reasons. It’s the launch of colincowieweddings.com, an online platform that provides fabulous weddings for brides of all ages and all incomes. Colin Cowie Hosts Four Valentine’s Day Weddings Atop the Empire State Building Merci: We’re so happy you chose NYC as the site for the “Wings of Love” weddings! Why stage the weddings here?
Colin Cowie: I wanted to do a big idea for the launch and what was bigger then partnering with the Empire State Building on the world’s most romantic day, arguably in the most romantic building in the world?!
Colin Cowie Hosts Four Valentine’s Day Weddings Atop the Empire State Building
Merci: Four weddings in one day, how did you make each wedding special?
Colin Cowie: In order to make this ceremony of love come alive we decided to host these four live events. Not only is this chic and elegant wedding a trend for Colin Weddings 2012 but what I did was really listen carefully to our couple.

Colin Cowie Hosts Four Valentine’s Day Weddings Atop the Empire State Building

Merci: What kind of ceremony was right for the couple?
Colin Cowie: We’re doing a rather formal ceremony for Angela and Lubin. One of the fun of rituals is it brings different cultures together. I think it’s very important for us to get a window into their lives and be able to do something that puts them all on the same path.
Colin Cowie Hosts Four Valentine’s Day Weddings Atop the Empire State Building
Merci: “Love is in the details,” can you share a few of your favorite details behind Angela and Lubin’s wedding?
Colin Cowie: Each guest received a yard and a half of ribbon and to write a note to the bride and groom. The notes were placed on top of an archway that they walk under. So they are married surrounded by the love and intention of their family and friends. After the ceremony we roll the ribbons up and present them in a box so they can look back at the love from their family and friends.

Merci: We love the decor! Innovative, creative and tres chic! How did the idea come together?
Colin Cowie: Afternoon tea is a great trend when you think about it. There are 52 Saturday nights in a year. It’s the most coveted night to celebrate and I think a great alternative if you want to have an event or wedding without spending a fortune is to have afternoon tea. So we set this beautiful afternoon tea up for them.

Merci: Stunning. We especially love the reception space.
Colin Cowie: The actual table itself is very very beautiful. We found a white canvas that was foil stemmed with a damask pattern with a beautiful soft pink runner down the middle of the table.

Merci: How could a bride, engaged couple, or those looking for a chic soiree incorporate the tea party theme into their event?
Colin Cowie: The idea here is rather then spending a lot of money on flowers the afternoon tea really is the centerpiece. We took old candelabras and we spray painted them baby pink with matching candlesticks to anchor the table. And all the scones, sandwiches, deserts, candies, and cookies creates a look that mirrors a banquet or the last supper.

Exclusive Interview with Kara Janx, Project Runway Star Turned Bridal Designer

We’re so thrilled to once again bring you our infinitely talented friend, designer Kara Janx . 2012 has been good to Kara. As if her successful run on Lifetime’s Project Runway All Stars wasn’t accomplishment enough, Kara has managed to add another illustrious notch on her belt: Fashion designer, television personality, wife, mother, entrepreneur and now, newly minted bridal designer.

With looks perfect for every occasion, Kara’s new bridal collection gracefully takes us from the engagement session to the rehearsal dinner, and then to the big day with stunning versatility and dynamic pops of color…
We’re thrilled to be sharing exclusive insight to Kara’s new venture with Merci New York’s chic and stylish readers. So without further adieu, feast your weary winter eyes on a selection of looks from Kara Janx bridal line and make sure to catch Kara’s tips on finding “the dress,” as well as a sneak peek of the designer’s {and newly minted New Yorker’s} own big day! Enjoy!

Exclusive Interview with Kara Janx, Project Runway Star Turned Bridal Designer
Merci: Kara, we must congratulate you on your Project Runway success and new bridal line! Wife, mom, designer, reality tv contestant… what inspired you to add a bridal collection to your already full plate?
Kara: The Ready to Wear line translated so easily into Bridal that after numerous requests from brides, it was an easy and wonderful transition.
Merci: What differentiates Kara Janx from other bridal collections?
Kara: The line feels current and relevant and the wearer can truly wear the dress again. The collection is subtle and contemporary.
Merci: What advice do you have for brides-to-be looking for “the dress?”
Kara: To be true to who you are, too often brides get swept up in the whole idea of ‘the day’ that they loose site of their own personal taste.
Exclusive Interview with Kara Janx, Project Runway Star Turned Bridal Designer Exclusive Interview with Kara Janx, Project Runway Star Turned Bridal Designer
Merci: How did your wedding influence your bridal designs?
Kara: Comfort and confidence, in that I mean that all brides should not have to worry about a thing on this special day. Everything they envisioned should be elevated and naturally they should feel comfortable, confident and of course GORGEOUS.
Merci: What was your bridal style? Has it changed since you’ve began designing bridal?
Kara: Simple and chic, it hasn’t changed but it has certainly evolved. Bridal opens the gateway to a whole new world of fabrications and silhouette and I love that I can explore all my options when it comes to design.
Exclusive Interview with Kara Janx, Project Runway Star Turned Bridal Designer Exclusive Interview with Kara Janx, Project Runway Star Turned Bridal Designer
Merci: Jumpsuits are taking over the bridal runway. We were thrilled to see your take on the trend. Stunning! Who is the jumpsuit-wearing-bride? What would you say to the women torn between dress and suit?
Kara: When you get married, I think it’s important to express yourself, the jumpsuit is so non-traditional and if that’s what you opt for it’s a great alternative. It’s fantastic that there are choices out there. I have had a lot of my brides wear the jumpsuit to their rehearsal dinners. They are saying, “I am fashion forward,” but on their wedding day they are really traditional, it’s a great way of mixing things up.
Merci: We are in love with the prints and pops of color in your line. What considerations should a bride take when incorporating pattern and color into her wedding?
Kara: Brides want to explore more options. I always recommend brides send me a swatch of color and then I try to find a print or color that doesn’t overwhelm the ceremony, but rather enhance it. Some of my 50′s style brides are going with a cheetah print dress with red lips and heels. Honestly if the proportions are right and the print or amazing pop of color feels like an extension of yourself, it’s a great way to freshen up the wedding and make it feel super current.
Exclusive Interview with Kara Janx, Project Runway Star Turned Bridal Designer Exclusive Interview with Kara Janx, Project Runway Star Turned Bridal Designer
Merci: So we’ve all heard, “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue,” what reccomendations do you have for a bride when creating her wedding look?
Kara: Think about the whole picture, try always to be true to who you are and what you represent. The sincerety will translate and you will live with this amazing memory forever. Take your time and enjoy the process, this really is your moment to be the most beautiful bride in the world.
Merci: What is your best piece of advice for the fashion loving bride?
Kara: Go there, take a chance, be risky. Trends come and go and when we look back at our pictures they will always set the tone of the time and place, it’s great to be your own trendsetter.

Merci: Though your native home is South Africa, we selfishly love that you’re now a resident New Yorker. What affect has living in New York had on your collections/style?
Kara: Street fashion in New York is progressive, relevant and so stylish. People express themselves through their style and it is so apparent on the streets, I love seeing a girl rocking something unexpected, it totally inspires me.
