Futuristic ‘Bike Superhighway’ Network Proposed For London

Futuristic ‘Bike Superhighway’ Network Proposed For London

It’s called SkyCycle , and this proposed large scale urban-infrastructure concept, illustrated in the image above, would use existing railway lines in London originally built for steam trains. The goal is to create a networked 220-kilometer bike superhighway.

The project, proposed by architectural firm Foster + Partners, is described as “vertically layering the city” to change the way Londoners on two wheels get around.

The population of London is growing and something has to be done to alleviate congestion, Foster + Partners notes. SkyCycle is one idea.

Looks utopian, right? But the designers say this kind of system “provides [commuter] capacity at a much lower cost than building new roads and tunnels.” Do it, London, we’re ready to ride! —Stephen Regenold

Looking for Peace in Holy Places

This week’s #FriFotos theme is HOLY PLACES. From churches and mosques to temples of all kinds, from enormous feats of engineering to tiny countertops in people’s homes, holy places are some of the most impressive places I’ve seen around the world.

Here is a selection of some interesting and beautiful holy places I’ve seen around the world:

Looking for Peace in Holy Places

The Blue Mosque — my introduction to Istanbul.  Stepping off the tram at the perfect moment of the evening got me this beautiful photo.

Looking for Peace in Holy Places

The first Hindu temple I ever visited was Sri Mahamariamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur.  This was a close-up of the roof detail.

Looking for Peace in Holy Places

One of the great surprises for me in Cappadocia, Turkey, was that there were so many rock churches hidden away in the fairy chimneys!

Looking for Peace in Holy Places

Basilica San Marco in Venice — one of the coolest looking churches in Italy, and never without huge crowds of humans and pigeons.

Looking for Peace in Holy Places

In Bali, homes are series of open-air rooms.  In Balinese homes, expect to see one of these rooms for prayer and offerings — or even a full statue of Ganesh welcoming you at the door!

Looking for Peace in Holy Places

This is downtown Amman in a nutshell — both flashy cars and vehicles on their last leg circling the mosque, street sellers everywhere, one of the city’s hills rising behind.

Looking for Peace in Holy Places

The Buddha Tooth Temple was a pretty cool sight in Singapore — hundreds of intricately carved statues like this one lined the walls.

Looking for Peace in Holy Places

I was surprised by how big of a Chinese influence there was in Vietnam, especially Hanoi.  This offering, complete with incense, was one of many on the island on Hoan Kiem Lake.

Looking for Peace in Holy Places

Paris‘s Basilique du Sacre-Coeur was constructed on top of the city’s highest hill so that people could look up and see it all over the city — and remember that God was always there, looking over them.

Looking for Peace in Holy Places

This memorial on the grounds of the Budapest synagogue has a leaf for every family that perished in the Holocaust…from Hungary alone.  A jarring image.

And finally — Wat Pho in Bangkok, home to the greatest collection of Buddhas in Thailand, as well as one very large one.

WILDFLOWERS -- Shooting stars are among the most delicate and fascinating wildflowers, sprouting about 5 inches tall at different elevations, in damp to not-so-damp wild areas, from early spring well into summer.

They're also very difficult to photograph, although you wouldn't know it by this image snapped Thursday by Montana Outdoor photographer Jaime Johnson .

Etsy Shopping | 20 Awesome “Something Blue” Ideas

I can’t say what it is about the “something old, new, borrowed, blue” tradition that has always entranced me but as long as I can remember, I have always loved to hear how brides incorporated these items into their special day. It was even my inspiration for the name of this blog; since my something blue wasn’t blue, it was something turquoise. What’s puzzling is it currently doesn’t mean anything to our culture and it says nothing about our relationship or our religion… it’s just one of those old things that we do, but why?

Image + Item: Sixpence Press – $10

The meanings behind the old English rhyme:

Something Old: Although it seams to have several different meanings, the general theme is a link of continuity from the bride’s past. Either a desire to remain connected to the life she is leaving behind or the remembrance of where she has been. Although, wikipedia says that the ‘old’ item is meant to provide protection for a baby to come.

Something New: This symbolizes optimism and hope for the Bride’s new life ahead.

Something Borrowed: Again, I have read that this has multiple meanings all linking back to happiness. You are supposed to borrow an item from another happily married woman so that her happiness will carry over to you and your marriage. Other sources say it symbolizes the love and adoration you have for the person you borrowed the item from. The borrowed item could also signify that you can always rely on the love and support from the person who you borrowed from.

Something Blue: The color blue has long been associated with love, modesty, fidelity, purity and good luck. Before the late 19th century, blue was a very popular color for wedding gowns. The Virgin Mary is also most often dressed in blue.

And a sixpence for her shoe: This part is often left off of the rhyme, courtesy of the 21st century. A sixpence is a silver British coin and this was a symbol of wealth and financial security for the future. For optimum fortune, the sixpence needs to be worn in your left shoe. Many companies now sell keepsake style sixpence pieces for weddings.

Honestly it all sounds a little superstitious, but I’m still for it, lol. What do you think? Will you be taking part in this tradition?

Rime Arodaky Bride for a Provencal Wedding

Rime Arodaky Bride for a Provencal Wedding

Today’s wonderful Provencal wedding features Stéphanie as a truly beautiful Rime Arodaky bride, one of our favourite French wedding dress designers. Stéphanie and her fiance planned a simple yet elegant wedding in stunning surroundings in the heart of Provence, all captured by Reego Photographie .

The beautiful brides takes us through their love story and big day:  “We met each other at the train station in Lyon. I knew when I met him he was the one. We decided to live together only 4 months after this day. It was 3 years ago and now we are married !

We knew we wanted to get married in summer with all our family and friends in south of France, near Nice. We visited lots of venue in a very short time because most of them were already reserved. We finally choose a stunning place with lavender, olive trees and a beautiful sea view  Domaine des Oliviers de l’Esterel.

At Domaine des Oliviers de l’Esterel we had to engage the services of the wedding planner from the venue to assist us in the day. I would recommend that when you book a venue to look at what services/ vendors you have to book as part of the package and which ones you can choose from anywhere.

Rime Arodaky Bride for a Provencal Wedding Rime Arodaky Bride for a Provencal Wedding Dress shopping was also an adventure but a very pleasant adventure. I tried on number of dress in Paris with my mother in 1 day, including the dress that I ended up choosing. Finally It was the first dress I tried and I knew that I had found the perfect dress for me.

We decided our wedding should be simple yet elegant. We only invited 55 guests. We choose to do a natural decoration with lavender, olive trees branch and wood. I am a decorator and I spent a lot of time thinking about our wedding. I created all the decoration, it was very important for me.

My groom was very involved in the preparations and we created a wedding which look like us.

Our wedding was more than either of us could have hoped for. We had a day and night fill of love and laughter. All vendors were incredible to work with, especially with the photography and makeup. They were of a precious help during the wedding day.

After the day was over, what still remains most in my memory was my husband’s vows to me, how I felt discovering him with my wedding dress, my mother and father driving me to my husband for the ceremony. It was truly perfect and magical. Rime Arodaky Bride for a Provencal Wedding

Wedding at Hotel Monaco Baltimore by Turner Photography

Turner Photography captured all the hula-hooping, teal chucks, and a bicycle built for two, at this wedding at Hotel Monaco Baltimore!  The bride and groom shared “During the planning process, Colleen and Chris knew one thing – they wanted their big day to resonate their personalities and who they were as a couple. The laidback couple’s wedding party donned Converse shoes and the groomsmen kept it comfortable with rolled-up sleeves and no jackets. Apart from an overexcited flower girl expressing her need for more chocolate in the middle of the ceremony, Colleen and Chris’ music-themed wedding went off without a hitch. On another note, how many brides can say they won a hula-hoop contest on their wedding night? (Hula-hoop extraordinaire Colleen owned the house with three hoops at once!)”

Some Eye Candy from Nicaragua

I focus on the practical aspects of travel a lot on this Cheapest Destinations Blog. I figure there are enough others out there doing a “photo of the day” and making virtual albums of their travels.

Still, sometimes a place is beautiful and you just want others to see what you saw.

Nicaragua is not a country you visit so you can see famous museums, tick off landmarks, or get your mug shot in front of something 100,000 others have gotten their mug shot in front of. If you’re going to Nicaragua, you’re probably going to DO something, not just see something.

Still, there are plenty of feasts for the eyes, especially in Granada and on the Pacific coast.

Enjoy.

Back to the practicalities next week.

LED strip embedded on Bike Messenger Bag

Last month we covered HALO, a San Francisco startup that makes LED safety belts for bikers . A new push this month, the company has partnered with fellow Bay Area bike brand Rickshaw Bagworks to build a glow-in-the-dark messenger bag.

Called the HALO ZERO LED bag, the product is currently in funding stage on Kickstarter . It’s made in the USA as a standard messenger design — though with the visibility upgrade of an embedded band of LED.

LED strip embedded on Bike Messenger Bag

The HALO light works via a “custom patented LED thermoplastic polyurethane fiber optic strip,” the company cites. In our test, it glowed solidly for hours to provide extra visibility on a bike ride through the city.

For the current project, HALO has attached its belt with Velcro to the Rickshaw messenger bag. The light is powered by two CR2025 batteries and will flash for up to 75 hours on a fresh set.

Red, green, blue, and yellow light options will be available. While riding, you can put it on strobe, flash, or solid LED shine modes.

The bag will retail for about $150. Special pricing is available if you jump in on the Kickstarter campaign , which runs through March and aims to raise $23,000 for production of this unique glowing bag.
