SmartMoney continues its series of consumer-friendly features with a great rundown on the rental car industry. It is top of mind for me, as the well-trained woman at Alamo the other day tried four times to sell me rental car insurance I didn’t need, with an accompanying furrowed brow every time I declined, as anyone with decent insurance and the right credit card should do. So that’s #4: “You probably don’t need insurance.”

But remember, when traveling outside the sprawl-happy U.S., you’re usually better off not renting a car at all. In cheap countries you can get a car and driver for the day for less–and he’ll know where he’s going! In expensive places like Europe and Japan, you’re better off taking public transportation anyway, unless you really have to get around in the countryside.
