Hammock Etiquette for Music Festivals

Hammock Etiquette for Music Festivals

I have good news everyone. Music festival season is upon us! Thank goodness. Back to sunny days outside (with the occasional crazy festival storm) and the sweet sounds of loud live music. Now every festival veteran has their own essentials they swear by; and for many of them hammock and straps are on the top of the list.

Now, unfortunately we have to have a little bit of an uncomfortable conversation here. Some people steal. Whether it’s because they’re arrogant, insecure, or just mean–it happens. Stealing is a negative emotion, which stems from fear. So let’s take a moment to rise above and feel sorry for these suckers.

If you’ve ever had your hammock stolen at a music festival you understand how devastating it can be. And it’s totally messed up that is even happens on a regular basis. So after you get angry, curse like a pirate, and settle into the grief stage of acceptance let’s remember karma. It’s a real thing and doesn’t skip anyone. It’s sad, but you can’t just get up and go to the bathroom and 100% expect your hammock to be in the same spot when you return. Get a friend to watch it at the very least.

However there are some ways to macgyver a variety of security solutions. They’re not completely foolproof, but if someone’s trying to steal and the goods aren’t budging easily-chances are they’ll move on. Be preventative so you and your friends can rage in your hammock all weekend long. If you have any thoughts, let’s hear them!

Zip Ties

Before you take off for a music-filled weekend, pick up some zip ties. Whether you choose to go the plastic or the steel route, this simple method is capable of deterring the tugger variety of thief. Take the zip tie and feed it through the nautical grade line loop (the rope things that comes out of each end of the hammock) and also through the loop on your hammock strap that your carabinier is attached to. Now be sure that you have your own pocket knife or pair of scissors so YOU can also take down your hammock. One downfall of this method is that if you want to use your hammock by a music stage, you won’t be able to get through security with your knife/scissors.

Bike Lock

If you have a bike lock, this is a great way to do it. Same principle as the zip ties, loop one end of the bike lock through the nautical grade line loop and also though wherever on the strap your carabiner is attached. Fasten the bike lock and viola, some serious hammock security. Now the thieves only have two options. They can either steal one strap, or cut the nautical grade line. However in order to get through that line, they would need garden clippers. And of course, with this method, the lighter and more compact your bike lock the better.

Indian Summer is upon us!

Indian Summer is upon us! The legendary Jim Morrison sang to us asking “Where will we be, when the summer’s gone“. His words will always resonate in our souls and hearts, but it should also push us out of the comforts that we have gotten used. Nowadays it’s easier to turn the TV and let our brains melt away than to go to our nearest park and sit down under a tree to read. We have forsaken the beauty of creation for empty propaganda and “reality TV“.  Although it may seem gloomy and hopeless, nature and it’s beauty haven’t gone anywhere. They are out there for you to embrace and breath some fresh air which our city lungs will really appreciate.  The Old Farmer’s Almanac which is oldest continuously published periodical in North America going strong since 1792, tells us that we are entering the “Indian Summer“.

Noon burn gold into our hair

Although the term Indian Summer may be taken as pejorative, it used to describe a weather period between late-September to mid-November. Our friends from the Old Farmer’s Almanac have the following to say regarding the Indian Summer:

  • As well as being warm, the atmosphere during Indian summer is hazy or smoky, there is no wind, the barometer is standing high, and the nights are clear and chilly.
  • A moving, cool, shallow polar air mass is converting into a deep, warm, stagnant anticyclone (high pressure) system, which has the effect of causing the haze and large swing in temperature between day and night.
  • The time of occurrence is important: The warm days must follow a spell of cold weather or a good hard frost.

Summer’s almost gone

Indian Summer is upon us!

Take advantage of these beautiful conditions and leave your comforts behind. Nobody said you cant take you phone with you, but getting out is the comfort zone is the hardest. Upload some The Doors songs in your phone, get your tent and camping gear ready and head into the great outdoors. Take it from Jim since he closes his song saying “The winter’s comin’ on, summer’s almost gone“.

Behold the All-in-One “Hearable” Wireless Listening System

Behold the All-in-One “Hearable” Wireless Listening System

These look like they can do a lot for just two little earbuds. The Here One audio system was created by Doppler Labs after years of research into making wearable technology that’s “more immersive and more human.” This represents the company’s first product, designed with the lofty goal of redefining “the way we engage with sound through technology,” no less.

Here One is now available for preorder and offers the lofty promise of two little “smart buds” that, together with a connected app, will be able to stream music from your smartphone and take hands-free phone calls, as well as filter out unwanted street noise while still allowing you to stay aware of your surroundings if you so choose (while cycling, for instance). Beyond the wireless aspect, the main selling point of Here One is that you can put them in your ears and take control of the sound around you, as you’re offered simultaneous control over the volume of your streamed audio and the ambient sound around you. It’s also trailblazing the idea of a “hearable,” a computerized object you place in your ears upon waking and leave in all day.

Discovery Music: Alumni Tracks You Should Know Vol. 40

We’ve put together some of our favorite tunes from Discovery Project alumni for you. We do this regularly, so keep checking in with the Alumni Tracks You Should Know series to see the latest and greatest from our Discovery Project artists.

INDO “Waiting”

INDO has stayed on the grind since his Discovery Project win back at Nocturnal Wonderland 2012. Since then, he’s released music on Ultra, Panda Funk and Brooklyn Fire. Dim Mak has just released his latest track, “Waiting,” and it’s currently at the top of label boss Steve Aoki ’s playlist. The tune plays with dark and light, pairing haunting synths in the breakdowns with some ultra-funky drops. Nasty electro vibes are waiting for you when the beat drops, laced with creative edits and some serious change-ups that keep the tune moving forward.

Follow INDO on Facebook | Twitter | SoundCloud

Grensta “Moloko Plus”

Grensta has only continued to grow as an artist. Over the last year, he has been featured on numerous DJ lineups in his Bay Area hometown and beyond, opening for everyone from Jack Beats to Disclosure . His latest self-released tune has him doing what he does best: beating up the beats on some dirty low-end business. The sub and grumbling bassline on this are everything, and the way the bassline plays with arpeggiating synths up top create a playful energy.

Agent Orange “Liquid Lunch”

Agent Orange may be one of the only Discovery Project alumni who’s really seen it all. From the days of the very first raves in the US, he has stayed true to his techno roots. Thumping and hypnotic, “Liquid Lunch” is what techno is all about: long tracks begging to be layered and manipulated while the crowd moves in unison. He’s had this tune kicking around for a bit, and with the release of his new full-length DJ mix, Ibiza Bites 2016, this slumper of a tune finally gets a proper release.

2ToneDisco x Dreamcasts “Glimmer”

2ToneDisco has teamed up with Dreamcasts on a track that feels like it could have easily been featured in a ‘90s video game. One of the best things about the future bass explosion is that producers have really returned to writing songs that play well all the way through from beginning to end. This track’s upbeat chord progressions and use of vocal samples as an improv tool are matched by the incredible drum programming that never feels like a cut-and-paste job.

Zima “King Strut”

Zima understands the importance of melody and movement in his music, and both are at their peak in “King Strut,” an ever-evolving journey into melodic funk. The bouncing, plucked strings and flute loop that open the tune give way to something unexpectedly dirty. This is a track that would be equally as good early in the night as a call to the dancefloor or super late-night to keep the vibe going. You can almost see the sun rising when the chords come in as they lead you back into the gritty bassline.

Finding Calm in the Circus Chaos

“Every time you feel yourself getting pulled into other people’ s nonsense repeat these words: Not my circus. Not my monkeys.”

Finding Calm in the Circus Chaos

Every day we engage in hundreds of tiny interactions that can positively or negatively affect our day if we allow it too.  I regularly forget that I have a choice with every situation and conversation how I react to it. I can either be pulled into the chaos, or I can stay on my side of line rooted without attachment to the fluctuating moment.  I can allow my emotions to take over and act from a place of anger and ego, or I can breathe and move from a place of higher awareness, and with more compassion.

Not my circus. Not my monkeys. The idiom made me laugh but I found so much truth in it. How many times have I let myself been pulled into another person’s drama and then blamed them for my negative shift in attitude? So I hang this quote up and repeat as my new mantra. Not my circus. Not my monkeys. Not my business.. not my place… not my desire to be pulled from harmony and into chaos.

So how can we remain in the presence of peace? Share your peace and bless others with it. When you see that people around you are frustrated or upset, say a silent prayer of peace for them. Take a few minutes in the morning to close your eyes and lift up your gratitude. Ask that the abundance be shared with those you know are feeling deficient. Don’t forget that we all have the human experience in common and that empathy and grace need to be provided on the daily for healing and reconciliation.

lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu “May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way, to that happiness and to that freedom for all.”

Double Stick Tape

Add double stick tape to the bottom of each banner flag. This tape from Thermoweb is my absolute favorite because it’s super sticky and really holds onto the glitter so you won’t loose the sparkles!

Crafters Tip // When I use this thick, sticky double stick tape, I like to use my Fiskars Non-stick scissors. Like the name, nothing sticks to them – including this tape!

Glitter Away

Pour the glitter over the double stick tape and then press into the tape. Brush off excess glitter with a paint brush and then save the left over glitter. String the banner flags onto ribbon and you’re golden!

Cwtch of the Week: A Woodland Cwtch

Cwtch of the Week: A Woodland Cwtch

How they met
Dan and Cerian will have been together for 10 years on the day of their wedding. He proposed December 14th 2013 so they’ve been engaged for a little while. When they realised that their 10 year anniversary fell on a Saturday, they decided to start looking for venues for that date.

The Engagement
Dan and Cerian always spoke about getting married but Cerian still didn’t expect him to propose when he did. He was talking about it when they went for a walk one day and then all of a sudden got down on one knee with a beautiful ring and asked her to marry him. It was quite private and completely unexpected, exactly how they wanted it to be!

Photographed during Cerian & Dan’s pre-wedding photoshoot in the local woodland by wedding photographer Lewis Fackrell Photography . They got married at the end of June at Canada lodge & Lake .

Thank you for sharing this beautiful moment Lewis! And to top it off Cwtchers, coming up soon, we will be able to share the whole amazing wedding with you – and trust me, Ive had a peak, it IS amazing! Cannot wait! x

The Lucy School Wedding by Emily Gude Photography

When you look at the portraits from The Lucy School wedding from Emily Gude Photography, Adrienne+Matt’s happiness boils over & thru your screen – it’s contagious! Photographer, Emily, shares more “This wedding was so effortlessly beautiful. I am incredibly honored to have witnessed and photograph such an incredibly intimate event. Adrienne and Matt’s wedding took place on a farm that is a private school for little ones – The Lucy School. Adrienne happens to also be a teacher there. From beginning to end, there were so many beautiful and unique details. I don’t even know where to begin! There was also plenty of laughter, we frolicked in a forest, we saved a trapped cat, soaked in the full moon and danced the night away to Adrienne and Matt’s beautiful music (they are in a band together)!! I’d love to rewind and do the whole day over again. I never wanted it to end.”

Twitter Invests in SoundCloud With $70M Cash Injection

Twitter Invests in SoundCloud With $70M Cash Injection

Things have looked dire at times this year for the dance enthusiast’s favorite streaming platform SoundCloud , with its overdue major label deals and subscription service launch failing to quell the kind of copyright issues that are really pissing artists off . With monetization lingering as a huge problem for SoundCloud, they’ve been given a hand this week by tech colleague Twitter .

Recode broke the news that Twitter has invested $70 million into the streaming platform, which was part of a fundraising round that tops out somewhere around $100 million. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey confirmed that his company now owns a stake in SoundCloud.

“Earlier this year we made an investment in SoundCloud through Twitter Ventures to help support some of our efforts with creators,” Dorsey told Recode . “They've been great partners of ours over the years and their community-supported approach mirrors ours in many ways.”

Meanwhile, SoundCloud confirmed the investment via a statement.

“This investment will enable SoundCloud to remain focused on building value for creators and listeners alike, and to continue the global rollout of many company initiatives such as our recently launched subscription service, SoundCloud Go.”

The news comes at a time when SoundCloud’s costs are certainly exceeding its revenues. The company’s February earnings report showed that while earnings had grown by more than 50 percent to reach $19.7 million, its losses had meanwhile nearly doubled to $41.8 million.

Reefton Tearooms and Bearded Mining Company

If you’re driving into Reefton from Greymouth, try not to choose the first café you see. Go further down the main road to “The Broadway Tearooms”. Don’t be put off by the word “Tearooms” – you won’t get weak coffee, greasy chips and stodgy pies here! We had  excellent coffee, simple great tasting home-baked food and friendly service. The ‘local’ vibe is fantastic…

Reefton Tearooms and Bearded Mining Company

….this place has a ‘old world’ feel about it with rows of beautiful glass lolly (candy) jars behind the counter and windowsills lined with ornate handmade tea cosies. (Nothing nostalgic about the coffee machine though –  state-of-the-art.).

Reefton Tearooms and Bearded Mining Company

Recently, after finishing our coffee here, we headed across the road to the Bearded Miners Co Ltd and the Miners Hut.  You might be forgiven for thinking these guys have come straight out of one of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films, but there’s nothing fake here folks, so no pulling those magnificent beards!  These bushmen are walking history books, they know their ancestry and they love to chat about the region:

Reefton Tearooms and Bearded Mining Company

There’s a certain dignity in having lived a hard life and let’s be honest, these ‘national treasures’ have lived life hard. (A miner’s life is only lucrative for a selected few.)  We could smell the coal smoke on their clothes and certain…unidentified beverages. But the knowledge these guys have and the stories they’re passing down to future generations, is priceless.

Reefton Tearooms and Bearded Mining Company

The replica 1870’s Mining Hut you see in the background of the above photo, is made of cedar slabs and packed with memorabilia, complete with a resident possum clutching a can of beer and a cheerful fire burning in the hearth:

Reefton Tearooms and Bearded Mining Company

…the men are happy to pose for photos..

Reefton Tearooms and Bearded Mining Company

..but I think the most photogenic of them all, is Max, the resident dog. Little Max also has a world-weary look about him; a survivor with his own story.

Happy travelling.
