Tuesday Shoesday | Blue Loubou’s at a Manhattan ‘Mini’-Wedding

Tuesday Shoesday | Blue Loubou’s at a Manhattan ‘Mini’-Wedding Quite possibly the most sophisticated “something blue” I’ve ever seen, these navy crepe de Chine Christian Louboutin slingbacks run circles around ubiquitousrobin’s egg garters and ho-hum hankies. They were also a tres-stylish part of Megan and Derrick’s New York City ‘mini’-wedding.
What’s a ‘mini’-wedding, you ask? Well, I suppose you’ll just have to wait until the bride’s story tomorrow to find out. {So sly of me, i know}.
Happy Tuesday Shoesday!

Oscar 2011: Tresses vs Dresses {A Wedding Stylist’s Guide to Oscar Inspiration for Your Wedding}

So the Oscars were last night. And of course, I was watching. But I have a bit of a confession to make. I wasn’t watching for the dresses – at least, not really.
Yes, I am a stylist . Yes, I love fashion. And yes, I love seeing how the stars pull it all together. But to be honest, all the “who is she wearing” stuff is kinda lame to me. Unless you’re in the market to really buy some hot-off-the-runway Lagerfeld loveliness {and if you are, kudos for you and psst, call me anytime to style you!}, it’s pointless to get all catty over it.
I kinda have a “What’s in it for me” mentality to the Oscars. Or more aptly, “What’s in it for my brides.”
That said – I’m going to resist the temptation to ogle over all the confectionery goodness the stars swathed themselves in. {I get it. You get it. They look good/bad/better than you expected. Riveting}. Instead I’ll share what I dissected from the big night – and what I will be sharing with our current bridal styling clients as a means of inspiration for their wedding day look.
Oscar 2011: Tresses vs Dresses {A Wedding Stylist’s Guide to Oscar Inspiration for Your Wedding} Numero uno reason I watch the Oscars- hair. The Oscars {and awards season in general} is the absolute best place to look for wedding day tress inspiration. Case in point? Try Googling “Wedding Day Hair.” Oy vey. You may as well have Googled “Nineties Prom” or “Disney Princesses.” I’m not trying to be mean, but tiaras and tight curls do not a wedding day hairstyle make. {Ever}. However, hail Oscar! Since celebs entrust in some of the hottest hair stylists all over the world to make sure their tresses stay trend-right to their gowns, Oscar hair is noteworthy to say the least. My biggest takeaway from last night’s performances in hairstyles? The glam-pony. J’adore.
Oscar 2011: Tresses vs Dresses {A Wedding Stylist’s Guide to Oscar Inspiration for Your Wedding} I wish I had better photos to show you, but since this is but a wee blog I cannot splurge on the Getty Images detail shots… However, as Oscar footage rolls out this AM, take note of Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman’s high-pony hair. Ponytails are pretty utilitarian, but paired with some height in the front, extensions in the back {a la Reese} and a bit of curl {a la Nicole}, they are just as glamorous as any tried and true updo. They are also a little mid-century modern {which I always adore}, and oodles more posh than the side pony we’ve been seeing for a few seasons. I love this trend and think it’s totally wedding-worthy.
Oscar 2011: Tresses vs Dresses {A Wedding Stylist’s Guide to Oscar Inspiration for Your Wedding} My Oscar Raison d’être Number 2: Beholding the bling. What? You mean you won’t be accessorizing for your wedding day a la Amy Adams with $1.35 million worth of diamond and emerald Cartier bling? No matter. Even if you are not renting your own designer baubles from companies such as Astarr {check them out, BTW}, that’s not to say the Oscars won’t show the very best in jewelry trends.
While Oscar-watching for my brides, I personally look for shape rather than designer. I was totally smitten by Natalie Portman’s beaded tassel earrings {love this look for the romantic bride}, Amy’s heirloom pieces {an estate sale knock off would do the vintage bride just fine} and The Insider host Lara Spencer’s geometric turquoise teardrops for a beach wedding.
Oscar 2011: Tresses vs Dresses {A Wedding Stylist’s Guide to Oscar Inspiration for Your Wedding} My Oscar bridal style tip three: Don’t think wedding. Think rehearsal dinner. Anyone can compile all the white dresses from Oscar night, slap them online, and tell you they are the next hot wedding dress trends. But unless they were at bridal market seeing those same silhouettes sashay down the runway, that’s probs not the case. {Or at least not right away. Bridal trends follow quite slowly after runway}.
Instead of thinking about your wedding day, train your brain to think rehearsal dinner. What red carpet embellishments and dress accents are being repeated on Oscar night? What eras are being evoked? What looks inspire something you can pull together from a one-stop shop to Barneys? Answer: Pure, clean, geometric sixties-style via Michelle Williams and Cate Blanchett. Oscar 2011: Tresses vs Dresses {A Wedding Stylist’s Guide to Oscar Inspiration for Your Wedding} Michelle and Cate may be wearing gowns, but their looks transcend perfectly to a bride’s rehearsal dinner attire. Both begin with a covered shoulder, beaded sixtes-esque embellishments, and clean, pure make up with white highlights to finish the look. Why does this work for your rehearsal dinner? Because I can easily think of about five contemporary cocktail dress designers whose DNA mimics this trend at the $300-$500 dress pricepoint at your local Saks or Barneys {Trina Turk, Milly, Shoshanna, DVF – i.e. shameless plug to my Revolve shop here }. The overall vibe is refined, a bit buttoned, and nostalgic, which is always such a perfect day before the big day look. I’ve already added these to mood boards for two rehearsal dinner bridal styling clients – and I totally think you should follow suit! Oscar 2011: Tresses vs Dresses {A Wedding Stylist’s Guide to Oscar Inspiration for Your Wedding} Final Oscar 2011 takeaway: Take note of color trends. Now, I already admitted I wasn’t going to collage one color and call it a trend {“Oh look, three people out of the thousands in attendance wore red- it must be a trend!” Um, no}. But here’s some food for thought – What are some red carpet color families that circle back to the multi-colored bridesmaid dress trend?
We all know plums are hot for bridesmaids, but how about having your girls wear shades of purples and blues? Take a peek at how gorgeous this looks when a plum dress palette is injected with some jewel tones on the bluer side of the color wheel. I think it’s remarkably elegant and seasonless. Oscar 2011: Tresses vs Dresses {A Wedding Stylist’s Guide to Oscar Inspiration for Your Wedding} Hope you’ve enjoyed my little wedding stylist musings… Of course, I’m anxious to hear your thoughts too! How are you using last night’s Oscar inspiration to develop your wedding day look?
xx,

Grand Details from a Plaza Wedding | Lawrence Scott Events

In addition to owning Merci New York , I think I may have mentioned that I also have a lovely time writing as The Plaza’s wedding correspondent. Every month, I have the pleasure of viewing a gorgeous Plaza wedding in all its glory and reporting on the details for their newsletter and other media outlets…
While every Plaza wedding is truly a feast for the senses, the transformation that occurred last month was beyond the scope of most imaginations. The celebration was grand in every sense of the word, from the opulent floral and décor, to the expansive menu, decadent treats, and amazing energy that surrounded the evening. {Read: I just had to share some of the details with you}.
To be honest, Fred Marcus’s photos were so spectacular, they speak a thousand words beyond what I could verbalize. Take a peek…
Grand Details from a Plaza Wedding | Lawrence Scott Events With a 750-person guest list, and a 47-person bridal party, the wedding required a great deal of space to showcase so many wow-factor details. Above, Lawrence Scott Events transformed The Palm Court into a lavish cocktail area.

It was a vanilla confectionery delight with layers of hazelnut crème and praline crunch, finished with a smooth fondant and a glistening band. Real Wedding | Becky + Brian at the Park Avenue Club

Story by Amelie Mauduit
Valentine’s Day may be over, but that’s not stopping us from spreading some love with this gorgeous RED and white wedding. Becky and Brian’s romantic winter wedding is positively gorgeous. We love the contrast of the hot red color on the snowy background in these stunning images captured by Jen Huang Photography .
Real Wedding | Becky + Brian at the Park Avenue Club Real Wedding | Becky + Brian at the Park Avenue Club Real Wedding | Becky + Brian at the Park Avenue Club Ceremony site: Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church , Plainfield, NJ
Reception site: Park Avenue Club , NJ
Photography: Jen Huang Photography , NY
Flowers: Nancy Kitchen from the Flower Loft, Clark NJ
Cake: The Pink Cake Box , Denville NJ
Bride’s Gown: Marisa, bought at Hannelore’s in Alexandria, VA
Bride’s Shoes: Mootsie Tootsie
Bridesmaid Dresses: Anna Elyse Dresses, bought at Garnish Boutique , in Baltimore, MD
Groom and Groomsmen suits: Joseph A. Bank

Becky and Brian wanted to evoke a warm winter feel to their January wedding. The color Red has always been the bride’s favorite, so it seemed natural to choose a red and black palette with gold and silver tones. Luckily, it was a snowy day and the couple enjoyed a beautiful white winter wonderland background, and some playful shots in the snow!

The bride carried a gorgeous, round bouquet with red ranunculus and roses, which set a perfect contrast against her classic a-line gown and chic fur shrug. Her six bridesmaids wore strapless red silk dupioni dresses and contrasting bouquets of white hydrangeas.

The ceremony took place in an old Presbyterian Church in Plainfield, NJ, with a reception following at the Park Avenue Club, {a spacious, restored dairy barn!} with beautiful fireplaces and lofted ceilings. The decor followed the same red and white palette with seasonal touches such as red apples and pine cones. This wedding was certainly a warm and lovely red fete, a perfect winter celebration!

Portfolio: Suzy + Sergio’s Valentine’s Day Engagement Session

Happy Valentine’s Day! We’re kicking off the week with a fabulous little engagement shoot Merci New York worked on with Sofia Negron Photography and NYC Faces at Sala One Nine . While Merci focused on styling the fashion, flowers and props to pack Suzy and Sergio’s shoot with a ton of cute details, Sofia snapped from all corners of the room and Anni Bruno made sure Suzy remained powdered and glossed to perfection! The results: a cozy, romantic and whimsical Valentine’s themed shoot that shares the couple’s adorable love story. Take a peek {and see our stylist’s notes beneath each vignette}!
Portfolio: Suzy + Sergio’s Valentine’s Day Engagement Session Sala One Nine is a cozy, Spanish tapas-style restaurant nestled on 19th Street and 6th Avenue. Its romantic nooks and crannies make it a perfect Valentine’s Day locale. For Suzy and Sergio’s e-session, Sofia, Anni and I wanted to show the soft, sexiness of the location, but still make the shoot playful, so Merci stitched up some hand sewn felt hearts and affixed them to striped straws. The centerpiece is equally playful, the poppies stem out of a bright red lunchbox {a little nod to school-house valentines}.
Portfolio: Suzy + Sergio’s Valentine’s Day Engagement Session Spanish tapas and Spanish love poems… Actually, our original fashion inspiration for Suzy’s outfit stemmed from the above book, Love Poems by Pablo Neruda. I loved the gold and pink palette, and wanted to show Suzy a look that was fun, festive and chic for V-Day… I was very excited to find her perfectly matched skirt, to start! If you are still searching for a {totally accessible} Valentine’s Day outfit, everything Suzy is wearing is currently in NYC stores. For a complete list of all where-to-buy fashion, see below.
Portfolio: Suzy + Sergio’s Valentine’s Day Engagement Session Suzy and Sergio were so stinking cute! They love to laugh… and I mean LOVE to laugh. As Sofia shot through the afternoon, the couple would not stop giggling. They have such a playful chemistry… In fact, this worked well with Merci’s props, such as the metallic “love” sign, which we intentionally crafted so it looked like a homemade valentine. At the bottom, we crafted adorable pink felt shoe clips and sewed gold sequins to them… It was the perfect touch to Suzy’s adorable outfit.
Portfolio: Suzy + Sergio’s Valentine’s Day Engagement Session We used simple in-season flowers to style the shoot. The white tulips were placed in assorted vessels and decorated with metallic doilies from Knot and Bow {one of our favorite crafting resources}. Suzy’s chic little hair accessory continued the metallic theme, but added just a little pop of vintage charm, too.

BHLDN Preview | Anthropologie’s Answer to All Things Wedding

This past Wednesday was quite the fun day for Merci… I had the awesome opportunity to travel down to Philly with some lovely blogger friends to preview the much-anticipated BHLDN {pronounced “beholden”} collection – and as expected, it was fabulous.
I am sure you guys have been hearing the buzz build for quite some time, but the BHLDN line is the sixth brand to launch under the Urban Outfitters umbrella – and in a similar {but more bespoke} fashion to Anthropologie, it is the stylish, detail-loving, and vintage-vying girl’s answer to all things wedding.
The line officially launches on Valentine’s Day, but here are a few of my {many} favorite things, {there’s just so much to share}…
BHLDN Preview | Anthropologie’s Answer to All Things Wedding Gorgeous, detail-driven dresses! After an amazing tour of the “campus” {read: a workplace styled to perfection complete with koi ponds and dog parks – but I digress}… we all enjoyed an intimate fashion show at a bed and breakfast turned pop-up shop for BHLDN. In addition to showing some beautiful gowns, the models also wore special-make up accessories from some of the most reputable milliners and accessory designers in bridal.
I especially loved the watercolor nature of the first gown, and the smoky coloring of the bottom hair flower, from Twigs and Honey. BHLDN Preview | Anthropologie’s Answer to All Things Wedding Details, details, details! Not one ounce of cuteness was left overlooked on any of the designs. From elegant pleating and flirty rosettes on the top tea-cut gown, to soft and ethereal petals on feminine belts, or the {bridesmaid gift worthy} bow bracelets – the BHLDN line was bursting with little accents that gave each piece a fun, bespoke feel.
BHLDN Preview | Anthropologie’s Answer to All Things Wedding After the fashion show, we were invited upstairs to experience four uniquely-styled rooms in the bed and breakfast. Each was merchandised will an array of BHLDN goodies, from pretty social dresses, tres-chic shoes {more on that later, of course}, and samples from the decorations collection, which will launch in the spring. Possibly the most fun part? Playing dress-up.
At top, Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere tries on her first wedding gown, and at bottom already-married me dabbles with a Tracy Reese cocktail dress that made me feel very Betty Draper-esque. Love! BHLDN Preview | Anthropologie’s Answer to All Things Wedding I cannot tell you how excited I am for ALL of you to see the BHLDN line first hand on Monday, {I mean really, look at these shoes!!}. I have tons more to share… And admittedly, I’m not giving away my all-time favorite piece just yet. {It may just be a vintage brocade and lurex accented d’orsay pump, and BLHDN may have only made 30 of them… but until a size 7.5 pair is safely secured in my shopping cart, you may never know}.
Are you excited abut the line? What do you think?

Portfolio: Vintage Subway Train Engagement Shoot with Photomuse

Sometimes it takes a few photos to realize how busy we’ve been! Right after the holidays, Merci New York partnered with Photomuse on a pretty amazing contest… a vintage-inspired engagement shoot on a moving {rattling, shaking, and all-out fun} forties subway car.
Each holiday season, the NYC Transit Authority rolls the vintage trains out of the transit museum and onto the tracks in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. Kristin Reimer and Steven Fontas of Photomuse had the brilliant idea of gifting one vintage-loving couple with a Merci-styled engagement shoot {enter forties fashion and props!} aboard the train and all around the city… After some outreach around the blogosphere, the team landed on a winning couple – Liz and Joel from Brooklyn. We had quite the fun day.
Portfolio: Vintage Subway Train Engagement Shoot with Photomuse We met our lucky winners the day after Christmas at the Photomuse studio. As a blizzard began outside, everyone scurried underground {and through three boroughs} to snag these fabulous shots of the adorable couple in all their vintage glory. Kristen and Steven really captured the chemistry between Liz and Joel, and I had an absolute blast developing and maintaining their vintage looks and era-inspired props.Take a peek… Portfolio: Vintage Subway Train Engagement Shoot with Photomuse Portfolio: Vintage Subway Train Engagement Shoot with Photomuse Portfolio: Vintage Subway Train Engagement Shoot with Photomuse Portfolio: Vintage Subway Train Engagement Shoot with Photomuse Portfolio: Vintage Subway Train Engagement Shoot with Photomuse One of my favorite parts of the day was the curious crowd. The subway was actually packed with tourists and train enthusiasts alike, but Photomuse did such a wonderful job in capturing Liz and Joel’s love story, that it truly looked like this was a chance encounter on a quiet late night train. While people craned their necks to see what sort of New York story was transpiring, the photographers snapped away, totally in their element, creating these gorgeous shots. It was such fun to style the shoot and help make their vision a reality.

Styled Shoot by Mood Events, Inspired by Vera Wang Fashion

Happy Monday, everyone! We’re kicking off the week with a gorgeous styled shoot from our friends at Mood Events and Production . They worked alongside Little Wunders Photography to submit this beautiful “Asian-Romance tablescape” to Merci New York… While there’s such a big trend for vintage decor elements in weddings, we always gravitate toward the polished and modern here at Merci, so it’s so wonderful to see wedding professionals who share our mindset! Not to mention, the inspiration behind the story was just so perfectly chic, we had to share with you immediately… Styled Shoot by Mood Events, Inspired by Vera Wang Fashion The shoot was inspired by a beautiful full-page ad by Vera Wang . The Mood team was immediately drawn to the deep, rich colors of the purple fabric and red velvet couch, and the simplicity of the entire ad. “With Chinese New Year upon us and Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we decided to create a tablescape around this ad that would be a NEW take, and a fusion, if you will, of Asian beauty and simplicity, coupled with the deep, sultry emotion of romance and love,” said Matt Serrao at Mood Events . Take a peek…
Styled Shoot by Mood Events, Inspired by Vera Wang Fashion From the designers at Mood Events and Production:
Our beautiful tablescape for 2 included luxurious lamour linens, mirrored place settings, clean lines and gorgeous floral centerpieces set against a backdrop of natural wicker rounds. We loved the idea of using non-traditional seating, and decided to incorporate wooden bar stools that have the form and structure similar to that found in Asian architecture.

Our buffet tablescape was set on a round table and included a variety of mouth-watering Asian appetizers. With the popularity of dessert buffets and the predictable symmetry typically found in them, we decided to do go in the complete opposite direction, and instead played off the roundness of the table and chose elegant savory foods and not your typical cutesy, sweet dessert treats.

We also designed a sculptural floral centerpiece that could easily be incorporated as an escort card tree, or a tree for hanging well wishes for the newly married couple. We love the Bonsai tree feeling of this floral centerpiece and the look of it’s complete and miniature landscape.

Lastly, we designed a tea ceremony for the couple. A traditional and symbolic ceremony in the Asian culture, we designed the tea ceremony setting with beautiful and rich burgundy silk cushions, and a stunning embroidered Asian tea chest.

All of the elements found in this shoot can be customized and tailored for any special event. We absolutely love the Asian aesthetic and the emotion these photos evoke of simplicity, romance and love.

We hope we have inspired you to see the potential of inspiration everywhere you may be. In this instance, it was a beautiful ad by a very talented fashion designer. If you are planning a wedding, we encourage you to be bold, be different and not to shy away from those things that will make your special day your very own. There’s a lot of trends in the wedding market today focused around vintage elements. While we love that entire aesthetic, we also like being different. Besides, that’s EXACTLY what we are. Expect to see a lot more new and exciting things from MOOD this year including an infusion of cultural flair and flavor. Just wait and see!

Hi Friends,
Found a cute store for you to shop at…! It’s actually located right across the street from my office! Andrea Trujillo had a sweet tooth and she wanted to share it with everyone. The store has a fantastic selection of sweets and then unique darling items of clothing.  They just launched their webstore and I chose some items to tempt you. Valentine’s Day and Easter are just around the corner.  Their staff is lovely and very helpful. Check it Out!
