Discovery Music: Alumni Tracks You Should Know Vol. 40

We’ve put together some of our favorite tunes from Discovery Project alumni for you. We do this regularly, so keep checking in with the Alumni Tracks You Should Know series to see the latest and greatest from our Discovery Project artists.

INDO “Waiting”

INDO has stayed on the grind since his Discovery Project win back at Nocturnal Wonderland 2012. Since then, he’s released music on Ultra, Panda Funk and Brooklyn Fire. Dim Mak has just released his latest track, “Waiting,” and it’s currently at the top of label boss Steve Aoki ’s playlist. The tune plays with dark and light, pairing haunting synths in the breakdowns with some ultra-funky drops. Nasty electro vibes are waiting for you when the beat drops, laced with creative edits and some serious change-ups that keep the tune moving forward.

Grensta “Moloko Plus”

Grensta has only continued to grow as an artist. Over the last year, he has been featured on numerous DJ lineups in his Bay Area hometown and beyond, opening for everyone from Jack Beats to Disclosure . His latest self-released tune has him doing what he does best: beating up the beats on some dirty low-end business. The sub and grumbling bassline on this are everything, and the way the bassline plays with arpeggiating synths up top create a playful energy.

Agent Orange “Liquid Lunch”

Agent Orange may be one of the only Discovery Project alumni who’s really seen it all. From the days of the very first raves in the US, he has stayed true to his techno roots. Thumping and hypnotic, “Liquid Lunch” is what techno is all about: long tracks begging to be layered and manipulated while the crowd moves in unison. He’s had this tune kicking around for a bit, and with the release of his new full-length DJ mix, Ibiza Bites 2016, this slumper of a tune finally gets a proper release.

2ToneDisco x Dreamcasts “Glimmer”

2ToneDisco has teamed up with Dreamcasts on a track that feels like it could have easily been featured in a ‘90s video game. One of the best things about the future bass explosion is that producers have really returned to writing songs that play well all the way through from beginning to end. This track’s upbeat chord progressions and use of vocal samples as an improv tool are matched by the incredible drum programming that never feels like a cut-and-paste job.

Zima “King Strut”

Zima understands the importance of melody and movement in his music, and both are at their peak in “King Strut,” an ever-evolving journey into melodic funk. The bouncing, plucked strings and flute loop that open the tune give way to something unexpectedly dirty. This is a track that would be equally as good early in the night as a call to the dancefloor or super late-night to keep the vibe going. You can almost see the sun rising when the chords come in as they lead you back into the gritty bassline.
