3 cities – 1 day of unforgettable adventure. Customize your trip today. Sound like a river cruise vacation of a lifetime? Would you believe a 24 km walking and cycling route connecting New Westminster, Burnaby and Vancouver?
The Central Valley Greenway (CVG) is more than a cycling route. It is a destination. This urban trail combines off road paths and on-street routes to lead you through scenic natural areas, light industrial land and vibrant neighbourhoods. Many cyclists commute to work along the CVG, but I prefer to take a leisurely approach to the ride and absorb the unique and varied landscapes featured along the way.
New Westminster
Begin your day in New Westminster and take advantage of the goodies available at the New Westminster Quay River Market. Consider bringing empty panniers as you will be tempted to shop. Fueled up and ready to spin follow the CVG signs and begin the climb up through historic downtown to Sapperton Landing. Watch for the designated bike path and enjoy panoramic views of the Fraser River.
Burnaby
No matter how many times I cycle this route, I am always fascinated by the stretch along the Brunette River and Still Creek. Although you can hear the roar of the city traffic in the distance the off road path follows the river bank and immerses you in nature.
Restoration work along this section of river has been going on since 1969. Today, thanks to the hard work of many volunteers and community groups, you can watch the salmon fight their way upstream to spawn. Imagine – nature viewing in our own back yard.
As you approach Burnaby Lake Park you will be forced to make a difficult decision. A pedestrian only 10 km loop trail along the banks of Burnaby Lake with great bird watching opportunities or a designated bike lane on Winston. If you have the time opt for the pedestrian pathway. You will not be disappointed.
Soon the CVG brings you back to reality. After all, you are cycling an urban trail. The route winds through a light industrial area, a definite contrast to the nature trails. Relish the views of the Coastal Mountains and on a clear day watch for the wind turbine atop of Grouse.
Vancouver
As you arrive at the Vancouver portion of the ride you follow the SkyTrain guideway. What a creative use of space. The path is protected, well lite and a smooth ride. The route will connect you to traffic calmed residential streets and provide a taste of the local neighbourhoods.
Speaking of vibrant neighbourhoods, you may find yourself diverting off the CVG to take in the ambiance of Commercial Drive. The “drive” is one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods and a day trip all on its own. Eclectic is probably the best way to describe the drive and it is worth exploring.
Look up, look way up! Yes, you are literally underneath the iconic East Van cross. Stop for a moment and take it all in. You are about to begin the last leg of the ride along Great Northern Way to Telus World of Science and Olympic Village. Spin on!
Map and Route Tips:
The route is well marked. Follow the signs.
Watch for bright yellow “finger signs.” These will direct you to community centres, points of interests, parks and sky train stations along the way.
Roll on…easily accessible by transit, simply roll your bike on to SkyTrain and begin your adventure.
