Hunters won’t be lichen latest threat to elk
JACKSON, WYOMING -- Elk, part of a herd of more than 1,600, make their way through blowing snow at the National Elk Refuge outside Jackson Hole, Wyo., where, for 90 years, elk coming down from the high country for the winter, have gathered where they are fed through the season. Almost 8,000 elk in three herds, fed alfalfa pellets daily in the coldest months, start arriving in mid-October from the surrounding high country. Tourists can reach the herd by horse-drawn sleigh. WILDLIFE -- Scabies, hoof-rot, wolves -- and now another threat to the dream of bountiful elk herds.

Wyoming wildlife officials suspect toxic lichen sickened elk
After three sick elk were found and euthanized near Rawlins, Wyoming Fish and Game officials are asking the public to report any sick elk in that area of the state. Lichen toxicosis is suspected in making the elk sick, probably after ingesting tumbleweed lichen, which has caused the deaths of hundreds of elk in the past decade.
