While the influence of the black artists who helped pioneer Detroit techno has been well documented, the black British influence on UK dance music hasn’t been so widely discussed. With EDC UK just around the corner, the Afropop Worldwide radio show is setting this right with their special audio documentary Roots and Future: A History of UK Dance.
“Look around today’s musical mainstream, and you’ll quickly realized that dance styles are everywhere… yet few know their full history. Roots and Future explores how a community of (primarily) black British musicians, fans, DJs, and radio pirates recreated dance music in the United Kingdom during the 1990s and 2000s.”
As the documentary points out, the influence of black UK dance music has been far-reaching, “from drum-twisting jungle to the slick sounds of garage, the ferocious rhythms of grime, and the all-encompassing low-end of dubstep.”
Brush up on your knowledge of the formidable history of black British dance music with the special Roots and Future: A History of UK Dance documentary below.
