The world is once again in mourning following terrorist attacks in Nice, France, on Thursday, with 84 confirmed dead after an attack during the country’s annual Bastille Day celebrations. Witnesses have described terror and chaos after an armed man drove a truck through crowds that were celebrating the national holiday, which is France’s equivalent of the 4th of July.
“France has been hit on the day of celebration. This is a form of sabotage,” French President Francois Hollande said in a statement yesterday, pointing out the poignancy of the attack occurring on a day he termed as a “symbol of liberty.”
President Barack Obama also issued a statement in support of the victims: “We stand in solidarity and partnership with France, our oldest ally, as they respond to and recover from this attack.”
The response from the international dance community has been particularly intense, with many expressing grief and dismay at yet another tragic attack on European soil. Others made solemn tributes to France, as well as the families of those who were lost.
