Watch the First Vinyl Record to Ever Spin in Space

It’s one small step for analog sound. The internet is alight this morning with chatter about mission success of the “Icarus Craft,” which is actually a custom-built, “space-proof” turntable that was lifted to a height of 94,413 feet by a high-altitude balloon so a record could spin.

The brainchild of former White Stripes frontman Jack White , the Icarus played a gold-plated vinyl press of astronomer Carl Sagan's spoken words. The record played from takeoff and continued spinning as it ascended out of the earth’s atmosphere into space, before the balloon eventually popped and the craft parachuted back down to earth.

"Our main goal from inception to completion of this project was to inject imagination and inspiration into the daily discourse of music and vinyl lovers,” Jack White told BBC . “We hope that in meeting our goal, we inspire others to dream big and start their own missions, whatever they may be."
