New exhibit finds romance in Vancouver city streets

New exhibit finds romance in Vancouver city streets

Near and Distant Influences (2013) by David Wilson.

Vancouver is a favourite subject of artist David Wilson. Capturing the city’s streets in all their rainy, romantic and sometimes noir-ish aspects, Wilson shows us the city in new, exciting ways.

You can see Wilson’s latest batch of Vancouver-centric works beginning tonight (Sept 25). Intersections, David Wilson’s exhibit of new paintings, opens with a reception (6 – 9 p.m.) at the Kimoto Gallery at 1525 W. 6th. The show runs until Oct. 11.

Described as an “urban realist,” Wilson seeks, finds and reflects the particular scenes that, for him, define the city, making us see our West Coast home in sometimes surprising ways. His beat is the shimmering neon of downtown, the lonely cab on a rain-soaked street, cars in flight at night. These are the intersections of the city.

After All (2014) by David Wilson.

“My cityscapes depict a cycle of addition and subtraction, renewal and decay,” Wilson has said. “The fragility of life, of existence, is what I intend to encapsulate within my paintings.”

Besides paintings, Intersections will also include a selection of looser, deconstructed work on corrugated board. These isolate and reassemble essential elements of the paintings in different ways.

Wilson has been exhibiting for over twenty years in British Columbia, Alberta and Newfoundland. His paintings can be found in numerous corporate and private collections both locally and abroad.
