While the fight to save underground institution Fabric London continues with the Save Our Culture campaign, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has unveiled a proposal this week that reinforces his previous calls in support of the city’s nightlife. It’s known as the “agent of change” principle, intended to support existing clubs in the face of development and gentrification, and it’s the sort of progressive policy that could help protect clubs all around the world.
“I intend to protect venues like the Curzon Mayfair by introducing an ‘Agent of Change’ rule into the next London Plan,” Khan said in a statement this week, emphasizing that it would protect London venues when redevelopment happens in their vicinity.
“Developers would be responsible for ensuring their new developments don't threaten the future of existing venues,” Khan said. “That would mean developers building flats near existing venues will need to ensure that residents are not unduly affected by sound from the venue, and that may include paying for soundproofing.”
