In an era when a pristinely polished marketing plan is the primary concern for most artists, Dossa & Locuzzed have reached name recognition simply by letting their distinct music sell itself. The Austrian duo have stamped out side-splitting drum & bass in a ridiculously short time since they’ve been around, which urged the astute Viper Recordings crew to ink an exclusive deal with them in April. Since the signing, they’ve shown the investment was a wise move based on the raging success of a handful of remixes, clutch compilation placements (including the inaugural Bassrush 1.0 album), and a single on their sister label, Viper VIP. However, the main Viper catalog is finally feeling their force in the form of their next double-sided single, “Dance / Shag.”
It’s the abnormal activity on the flipside that has been earning those coveted rewinds out in the field, as “Shag” continues to ream every earhole it encounters. The jump-up jam couldn’t be any more distinct, due mostly to the funk-fueled, stab-steered aesthetic they’re currently cornering. The percussion is pumped up to the max, but it’s the way the main riff gradually gives way to tinny tones and warbling synths that gets us going. Dossa & Locuzzed speak on the single:
We tried to combine our funky style with the state-of-the-art jump-up style, and this is what came out. The people always go nuts when we play “Shag” at our gigs, and the DJ support we get is great so far! Viper has always released innovative and funky stuff, so we think it’s good to have them behind us for what we are trying to reach with our music.
Available September 30 via Viper Recordings.
