The practice of sampling continues to define electronic music, though it’s one that has significantly evolved in the current dancefloor era. However, there was an earlier time when artists were free to sample to their hearts’ content without having to worry about excessive restrictions placed upon them due to copyright law.
This week, we’ve stumbled across an obscure mini documentary that aired on Australian television back in 1988. It examines some of these early iconic sampling adventures, including Cold Cut’s “Paid in Full,” which sampled the voice of Israeli singer Ofra Haza, and Tone Loc’s “Wild Thing,” which notoriously used an uncredited Van Halen sample .
