With the image of a musical instrument — the harp — stamped on their coins and on their passports, it seems natural that the people of Ireland would join in with an international celebration of live music. So they have. June 21 marks the celebration of Love Live Music Day all across Ireland, with musicians professional and amateur sharing classical, traditional, rock, jazz, and other sorts of music in outdoor concerts, community halls, concert venues, pubs, schools, churches, and other places as well.
They will also share part of it with you, too, even if you are not in Ireland on the day. RTE Lyric fm will be broadcasting an outdoor concert from Meeting House Square in Dublin online on 21 June from 6pm Irish (1pm US Eastern time). Artists expected to appear include Tarab, Mick O’Brien, members of the RTE Concert Orchestra and the DIT Traditional Music ensemble, We Banjo 3, The Unwanted, and special guest Sean Mac Erlaine. There will also be a world premiere of a work by RTE lyric fm composer in residence Linda Buckley. You may look for information about tuning in on the day at the lyric fm web site.
This will be “ a packed lineup of exceptional musicians who are connected by their expressions of interpretations of traditional Irish music, “ said project manager Jody Ackland, commenting that the schedule of musicians had been chosen for international broadcast with the interests of international listeners in mind.
Among other events taking place on the day are a live music gathering in the heart of Ennis town in County Clare, long a center for Irish traditional music; a gospel music gathering at Saint Stephen’s Green in Dublin, presented by Walton’s New School of Music; pipers, dancers, and harpists offering a solstice celebration at Lochtar Na Cua standing stones in Country Kerry; and dozens of other events across the country. Love Live Music is a partner of International Music Day Fête de la Musique, which is held annually at the summer solstice in one hundred twenty countries across the world.
