It’s far too easy for artists nowadays to bite a chart-topping style, tweak it a tad, and turn it around as their own home-brewed brand. But Bionik isn’t about that life, as the Minnesota-based beatmaker continues to fashion a sound less concerned with what sells and more focused on hitting the markers that separate bandwagoners from trailblazers. The difference is easy to detect on his forthcoming The Way I Be EP, which finds him burrowing deeper into his own personal pocket within bass music.
While he continues to push out pieces from the collaboration-heavy release, we’ve managed to snag the only remix from the package. With it, he spins Sarah White’s twinkly single “Sweet Song” into a thing of transcendent beauty, fusing low-end and dancehall with great ease. “When I heard Sarah’s EP, I was instantly drawn to her vocals on this song and couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into a remix,” he shares with Insomniac. “When it was done, I realized that this downtempo future-bass love song was the perfect final addition to my EP.” The vocal-driven bit is smothered in layers of melodious baby-making bliss, embedding peaks and valleys throughout to reflect every relationship ever. It’s the quintessential love song of our time, only further reinforcing the enthusiasm Bionik brings out of us.
