Party in Vancouver’s Famous Urban Forest: Celebrate Stanley Park, Aug. 24-25

It was 125 years ago that an enlightened Vancouver city council petitioned the federal government to set aside more than 1,000 acres on the edge of the city for park and recreation purposes.

Fast-forward to the present and Stanley Park is one of the world’s premiere urban forests and a must-see destination for visitors. Located in the heart of a city of millions, the park manages to remain stubbornly wild, with tracts of old growth forest, rugged cliffs plunging to the sea and pristine lakes. But these days there’s also something for everyone – from ornate gardens to a world-class aquarium and an idyllic seaside promenade.

This summer Vancouver is honoring its unique natural treasure with Celebrate Stanley Park , a two-day birthday bash, Aug. 24-Aug. 25. Second Beach , a stunning stretch of white sand inside the park, will be transformed into an outdoor stage with a full lineup of live music. Take in free tunes while enjoying gourmet street food from local food carts and an outdoor beer garden featuring Stanley Park Brewery’s own beers.

Meanwhile, the rest of the park comes alive with activity, as well. See Stanley Park’s wild side on special trail walks led by the ecological society. Stop by the rose garden for some live Shakespeare. Soak up local First Nations culture with displays from aboriginal artisans, or check out thrilling rugby and cricket matches on the park’s lush playing fields.
