Can’t Get a Signal on Your Mobile at a Music Festival? Drones Could Be the Answer

We all know the frustration of trying to message your buddy so you can meet up at a huge music festival, yet that text message just won’t go through, and don’t even think about trying to make a call. Thousands upon thousands of partygoers in close proximity in a remote location doesn’t often lend itself to good phone reception. However, help could be at hand in the form of drones.

Phone provider AT&T has revealed in a blog post that over the past year, they’ve been exploring and testing the different ways in which drones can help with mobile reception at music festivals.

“Imagine you’re at a concert watching your favorite band, and out of the corner of your eye you notice a tethered drone hovering nearby,” the blog post says. “But this drone isn’t taking photos or videos of the band. It's temporarily providing enhanced LTE wireless coverage at the packed venue so you, along with thousands of others in attendance, can simultaneously send photos and videos to share the moment.”

While AT&T concedes this isn’t a reality yet, it claims the company expects many different uses for drones in the future, detailing some of the other possible applications.
