Following the news yesterday that clubbing institution Fabric London had managed to raise $140,000 towards its court appeal as part of the club’s ‘Save Our Culture’ campaign, today live streaming leaders Boiler Room will be gathering a roundtable within the brick walls of the club, featuring artists, industry figures, politicians, media representatives as well as Fabric co-founder Cameron Leslie, to discuss the challenges faced by nightlife, as well as the slow erasure of culture from the city.
“Fabric is fighting a battle to stay alive,” Boiler Room said in a statement.
“40% of London venues have closed in the past 10 years. There is a clear disjoint between not just generations, but between communities and the bodies they elect; between cultural spaces, and those who wield regulatory powers over them. It's a bleak scene.”
One of the artists speaking on the panel will be drum & bass stalwart Goldie , who infamously threatened to melt down the MBE he’d been awarded in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list in February, upon hearing earlier this month that Fabric London would be permanently closed.
“I’m wondering whether or not the likes of me, the likes of Jazzie B, Norman Jay, Pete Tong for that matter, should just trade our MBEs in, melt them down and put them in a pencil-pushers coffee, so it can taste a little bit sweeter for him today, so he feels more successful in killing counter culture and culture itself.”
The roundtable will run for several hours throughout the UK afternoon, and those watching stateside can tune in early morning from 9.30am ET and 6.30am PT.
Tune in over at the Boiler Room minisite to join the discussion.
