Avoid April if You Can’t Take the Heat
If you visit Cambodia during March and April, be prepared for some extreme temperatures! This is the hottest time of the year and it can get warmer than 40 degrees Celsius. If you are spending most of your time at the beach you might be able to beat the heat, but it can get pretty uncomfortable in the cities – especially for travellers from the Northern hemisphere who aren’t used to such heat!
May and June Bring Monsoons
The monsoon season in May and June will bring plenty of rain and high humidity, which will continue until September or October. However, this doesn’t mean that this is a bad time to visit. It doesn’t rain all day long, there are only short downpours for an hour or so every day. During the wet season the jungles will be more lush and green, the temperatures will be cooler, the crowds will be smaller and the prices will be cheaper. However, if you plan on visiting some of the more isolated areas the wet season will make for more difficult travel.
The wet season is also a wonderful time to visit the famous ruins of Angkor Wat . The temples will be surrounded by greenery and the moats encircling them will be brimming with water. There will be fewer tourists, so you can really enjoy the peaceful and sacred atmosphere.
The Dry Season
The dry season in Cambodia lasts from the month of October to March or April and during this time of year there will be hot winds blowing across the entire country. The months of November to January offer some of the most pleasant weather – the temperature will be in the high 20s, ideal for sightseeing and swimming but not too overwhelmingly hot. If you are visiting the beach destinations on the South Coast, they will have the most sunshine and clearest water during the dry season from December to April.
Of course, the season with the best weather will also be the most expensive and crowded season. It may be the best time to visit Cambodia but expect plenty of other tourists and higher prices on flights, hotels in Cambodia and other expenses.
