When to visit Narcisse Snake Dens
Twice a year , thousands of red-sided garter snakes gather to either leave their winter dens, or return to spend another winter out of the cold. In the spring time, the garter snakes will emerge from their dens to begin an amazing mating ritual that is a sight to see for all snake and nature lovers. Thousands of males will lie in wait for the females to appear from their dens. Trying to find a mate, the males will try to out slither the other males to get to the female, their eagerness often getting them so entangled in their quest to conquer the female that the males will roll down a hill, inspiring the term “mating ball”. In the fall, the same snakes will return to this area and spend their last warm days before submerging back into their dens for the winter months.
