Even in the digital era, it appears there’s still plenty of love for the idea of a mixtape. It’s not surprising—considering how it helped form dance culture in its early days—and there’s still so much love for the cassette tape itself ,in spite of its functional limitations. Spotify users who’d like to hang on to the medium can do exactly that, thanks to the Pacemaker app .
The Pacemaker is essentially a DJ app for iOS that is able to plug into Spotify, allowing you to curate mixtapes and then share them with friends. While the app has been around since early 2014, it recently upgraded with features that makes things even easier for casual users.
“‘DJ’ is a term that’s very elitist,” Jonas Norberg from Pacemaker told the Verge upon the rollout of the app’s new features. “We want to make it possible for anyone to create a great-sounding mix. That has always been our ambition.”
It essentially offers a simplified, user-friendly version of the sort of software solutions like Serato used by professional DJs, but it can be used by anyone regardless of DJing experience.
A new feature called “Mix Transitions” allows users to choose the moment that a track transitions with a beatmatch into the next, while the “Mix Now” feature will instantly fade into the next song that’s been selected for your mix. While it’s certainly less than professional DJing, its capabilities also go well beyond simply adding smooth transitions.
