Ljubljana – Europe’s Most Underrated Capital

Arguably the capital city with the most tongue-twisting name in Europe, Ljubljana, Slovenia, is also one of Europe’s most livable cities. The fact that’s so unknown to many foreigners is because it doesn’t really have major landmark or highlights. Instead, this is a city that is worth visiting simply because it’s charming, welcoming and relaxing.

With a population of approximately 280,000 people, Ljubljana is no enormous city. It’s rather the opposite—Ljubljana feels like a small laid back town.

Ljubljana’s Historic Charm

With hilltop castle surrounded by an atmospheric pedestrianized Old town, Ljubljana is a beautiful and charming destination—a great place to spend a day or two in.

The unique historic feel of the city is countered by a selection of crumbling buildings covered in graffiti. Ljubljana is, however, one of those few cities that can pull off having a rougher side. The city is even more atmospheric just because of its graffiti-covered buildings.

Ljubljana Slovenia Old Town

Although there are a few fine museums, I don’t really recommend visiting them. I want to say that your time is better spent outside. You can stroll across and around the Old Town and get a real sense of the city’s history and architecture in no more than an hour or two. Dedicating at least one full day to the city is mandatory. Simply wandering through the beautiful old streets, sipping coffee at a riverside café and admiring the architecture at the city’s main squares is enough to take up a full day.

While walking around the Old Town, it is not hard to see why Ljubljana is regarded as one of Europe’s most livable cities. There are green space everywhere, the entire city center is traffic-free, the buildings are beautiful, and there are numerous events going on all-year round.
