Last year Dimitri Hegemann, founder of the legendary Tresor club and label in Berlin, revealed to Insomniac that he had plans to open a techno museum in the city—an establishment he prefers to refer to as “Living Archive of Elektronika,” due to the fact that techno remains “a living, inspiring and vivid movement” in Berlin. Finally, news has broken on where exactly this museum will be located, and it’s within the same sprawling, spectacular complex that houses Tresor itself.
The dark, industrial basement venue that’s housed Tresor since 2007 is actually part of a considerably larger, renovated power plant known as Kraftwerk , perhaps the most stunning of all Berlin’s converted industrial venues. Every August, it’s home to the Atonal Festival , one of the world’s most important showcases for experimental music.
Hegemann revealed his plans to lifestyle site Star2 while discussing the 25th anniversary of Tresor, which he established in 1991, following the fall of the Berlin Wall.
“None of the plans laid for the future of the city after the fall of the Wall worked out,” Hegemann told Star2 . “An ‘economy of niches’ ended up in its place: open a club or a gallery, a restaurant, a bar, etc. That economy of niches dictated what to do next, and it’s what has made Berlin so attractive.”
