Last week, we received the sad news of the passing of Chicago pioneer DJ Spank-Spank , who alongside DJ Pierre and Herb J comprised the famous PHUTURE , the trio credited as producing the first-ever acid house track after they formed in the ‘80s. Spanky had joined with Pierre to reform PHUTURE several years ago, and it’s now been confirmed the show will go on.
“I am committed to perform as PHUTURE in the upcoming tours that were booked prior to DJ Spank Spank's passing,” Pierre confirmed on Facebook this week.
“I thought long and hard on how to make this show work without Spank—and the most natural choice for me was Angel Alanis ,” Pierre says, referring to the fellow Chicago acid house veteran who has toured with PHUTURE as a silent member in the past.
“Angel was instrumental in helping putting the show together as Phuture live from the bare minimum. From nothing. He was there from the very beginning of the Phuture live tours… Out of all the people who could pull this off I believe that Spanky would only be comfortable with Angel filling in.”
Pierre also confirmed the exciting news that he’s figured out a way to still include Spanky as part of the shows: “Technology gets a win there. We are already working on how we can give you the same experience as if Spank were here.”
A portion of the shows will be donated to Spanky’s family, with Pierre labeling the performances as a “farewell moment to my friend and my brother.” Read the post in full below.
