A Three Part Indian Wedding in NYC: The Sangeet

We absolutely adore the beautiful traditions and vivid color behind Indian weddings and are so thrilled to share a three part special with you on the Merci New York blog.   Nitasha and Amar’s wedding was photographed by Tara Sharma Photography and took place in three parts: Sangeet, Ceremony, and Reception.

With an event this large it took over a year to plan, but the story behind this couple goes back much further. The first event of the wedding is the Sangeet. It is traditionally the first event and takes place the night before the wedding.

Nitasha and Amar met in high school as classmates and have been together for ten years. Amar surprised Nitasha with the proposal, which involved an imaginative walk down memory lane for the couple.

The ambiance captures who the couple have been and who they have become. Both from Long Island and New York City, their night incorporated New York City sophistication as well as country and suburban Long Island style.

The Sangeet was held at Amar’s parents home.  The mother of the groom managed the planning and decor details for the night. It was an elaborate tented affair  featuring food from various parts of India that the couple’s parents and ancestors were from.

Since most of Nitasha and Amar’s families live in India, having traditional aspects of their cultural was important. A very traditional part was the henna tattooing during the night.

During the Sangeet, there were many dances put on by friends and family of the bride and groom.

The colors and accents of the decor add to a very East meets West ideal, which was important to the bride and groom.  They wanted it to be a consistant theme throughout the wedding festivities.

Guests wore traditional saris and blouses while dancing the night away to traditional Indian music.

The three part wedding took over a year planning and Nitasha and Amar did most of the planning themselves, with a lot of help from their families. According to Nitasha, the planning was more challenging than imagined since there is much coordination that goes into putting together a large Indian wedding.  But the work was well worth it – we cannot wait to show you the ceremony and reception!  Stay tuned for new posts soon!
