The cold, wet weather is good for one thing in Vancouver… When the storms hit, you know that there’s a good chance that it will be snowing up in the mountains.

Thanks to all the cold, wet weather we’ve been getting lately, the local mountains have been receiving a good amount of snow, leading to opening days for skiing and snowboarding starting as early as this week!

As usual, Whistler Mountain will be the first of the local mountains to open, kicking off its 50th anniversary season one week ahead of schedule when it opens tomorrow (Thursday, November 19) to the public. Guests will have access to five lifts, eight runs and 1,800 vertical feet of skiing and riding on Opening Day. Blackcomb Mountain will also be opening as scheduled on November 26.

Cypress Mountain is promising to be the first Vancouver mountain to open this season when it starts up its lifts on Friday, November 20. The downhill skiing area will be open on Friday from 10:00am until 3:30pm.

Thanks to the recent snowfall and high-powered snowmaking machinery, Cypress Mountain now has “more snow on the ground this morning than at any point last season.” The mountain is anticipating an opening of the Eagle Express Quad (with access to 3+ runs) plus Easy Rider Quad for beginners.

The mountain will also be open on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am until 4:00pm.

Other mountains on the North Shore haven’t yet announced their opening days. However, Grouse Mountain is now offering an online contest to guess the Opening Day, where you could win a gear pack that includes a Herschel Supply backpack, Spy goggles and a K2 helmet.
