Think about your ideal holiday destination or experience.
What image does that conjure up for you?
I must admit, this visualization exercise had me a little stuck. Wasn’t I already living the dream road tripping around Australia? In my 16 years of world travel, surely I’d already experienced the ideal.
I’d already checked off several dream bucket-list experiences: wild gorillas in Uganda, African safaris, endless hammock swinging in South East Asia, horse riding through Bryce Canyon, or snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef while holding Kalyra’s hand. They were quite utopic, what was left to long for?
It’s hard to define what the ultimate would look like for me now. Utopia experiences depend a lot on what stage of your life you’re in and who you travel with.
The Maldives have always been at the top of my list. Just today, I was swooning over an ad at one of those bungalows over the Indian Ocean – the water so clear you could see every wrinkle on the girl snorkelling. (Yeah, you know it – ain’t no wrinkles on her air-brushed body.)
I longed for that to be me. To jump off my private deck into the water, climb back out and laze in the sun chair waiting for a magnificent sunset with a strawberry daiquiri – because daiquiris suit bungalows over the water.
But, then Savannah jumped on my back and in one giant ripple evaporated the dream. No way am I going to the Maldives with the girls. I’d be on edge the entire time and it would be more like hell than Utopia.
No one ever reaches out for Utopia, they just dream about it, but Wotifia is the chance to create something you feel is attainable and worthwhile. The moment when you can define and create what would give you the ultimate memory making experience perfect for your current life stage.

What is my Wotifia?
I was asked,
What does Wotifia mean to you? What’s your ideal destination and what would you be doing there, if everything was possible?
What would I really want to do? What would be something totally different to what I’ve always experienced? What have I held off doing due to money or time or difficulty? What would be the most fun for us right now as a family?
When I jumped into Wotifia like that, it was pretty easy to work it out. The Maldives wasn’t even on the horizon.
Instead, I had me some below zero temperatures, some egg nog, and a snow suit.
Yep, my Wotifia involves us hitting the slopes.
Christmas in the Colorado Rockies in a log cabin. YES! This has been a travel dream of mine often battling the Maldives for first place. But, I’m usually too focused on chasing the sun and brushing it off for later.
Chasing the winter when you can ski during the day and huddle around a campfire of an evening is a definite Wotifia.
Kalyra still talks about her first snow experience when we lived in the US when she was two and often says she wants to go back to the States to see snow. They both love adventure and trying something new. I know they’ll love learning to ski. Craig and I have only skied once – in Maggie Valley, North Carolina and it was fake snow.
But, we had a blast and we’ve wanted to do more of it ever since, in real snow.
You don’t get much more real than Colorado. I know there are so many places to choose for a skiing holiday in Northern America, but for some reason, I’ve always dreamed of Colorado. Log cabins nestled into valleys or perched off slopes. Snowmen, twinkling lights and endless ski runs of powdery white snow – the real stuff that actually falls while your skiing.
My Wotifia World will consist of family, friends, log cabin, wood fires, snow up to the door that we have to shovel away (that’s fun right? ), snowboarding and sledding, snowball fights, snow angels, tobogganing, hot toddies, red wine, lots of laughter, and a huge Christmas feast.
Turkey will be involved as will, our personal favourite, pumpkin pie.
There’ll have to be some daggy dancing thrown in for the grown ups late at night – to Don’t stop Believing. We never went out for a night on the town in the States without the entire bar stopping to sing this song in unison. We’ll be making sure our friends who sang it with us in the bars will be singing it with us in our log cabin – what a reunion!
The thought of my Christmas skiing holiday in the Colorado Rockies fills me with the warm fuzzies way more than lying under the sun on my private bungalow in the Maldives would. It’s a little more soulful, which I think is what Wotifia is about.
Profound memories of adventure, exercise, good food, snowflakes, warmth, cuddles and laughter and conversation with those we love.
I’m pencilling it in for the US road trip we’re currently planning for next year. Number one on the US bucket list – Colorado Christmas. Log cabin. Skiing. 2015. Don’t stop believing.
