Time-Lapse Video Reveals How This Australian City’s Nightlife Was Decimated by Controversial Lockout Laws

Earlier this year, we looked at the controversial “lockout laws” in Sydney, Australia, which prevent punters from entering clubs later than 1:30 am or purchasing drinks later than 3am. The laws have been in the spotlight for decimating the city’s formerly vibrant clubbing scene. Dozens of clubs and bars have closed since the laws were introduced in 2014, though if there was any doubt of their impact on the city’s nightlife, a new time-lapse video has offered a somber new perspective.

The video was produced by Australian production company Shifted Pictures , and it shows the boarded-up exteriors of former clubbing hotspots that used to be the focal point for Sydney’s clubbing scene, which has enjoyed a vibrant energy since the early ‘90s.

It comes at a time when attention is turning increasingly to the survival of nightlife in cities around the world. Picking up speed in recent weeks is the #nightlifematters campaign , a year-long campaign to raise awareness about the UK’s nightlife industry in particular.
