Jeff Mills Rebooting Orchestral Classic ‘The Planets’ at Abbey Road Studios

Motor City legend Jeff Mills is having an interesting year indeed, honored with the Spirit of Detroit award during Detroit Techno Week back in May, as well as undertaking several new album projects . Known for his love of sci-fi futurism, he’s revealed he’s undertaking a rather special project in this vein that has taken him all the way to London’s iconic Abbey Road Studios .

Mills is currently holed up in what’s described as the most “famous studio in the world,” rerecording his own version of The Planets; a famous seven-movement orchestral creation written by English composer Gustav Holst between 1914 and 1916, where each movement of the composition is named after a planet in the solar system.

“Today was one of these special and memorable points in my career when it would be logical to stop and think about ‘how on earth did I get here?’” Mills said on Facebook , where he’ll be posting regular reports on his experiences while recording in the studios.

“As we approach this discreet all-white building, I can see the famous striped crosswalk that generations have come to recognize as the cover of the Beatles album Abbey Road .

“We’re greeted by Jonathan Allen, the chief engineer that we’ll be working with the next few days. We were taken into the control booth to see how large and equipped it is. It really felt like a spaceship cockpit with a floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the enormous room.”

Jeff Mills’ The Planets is due for release in 2017. Check out his studio reports that he will be updating daily, and watch the documentary below for more info on the famous Abbey Road Studios.
