Anglers attempt to tag 1,200-pound mako shark off California

How do you tag an estimated 1,200-pound mako shark after it has been reeled alongside the boat?

Very carefully, and hope for the best.

The accompanying footage shows a crew fishing off California, trying to place a tag in a giant mako's dorsal fin before cutting the line and watching the massive predator swim away.

The angler is Jay Carter and it's not known where the footage was captured, although the location was probably off Southern California.

We've shortened the video to bring viewers closer to the tagging effort. As they can see, the crew is not sure the tag was placed firmly enough in the dorsal fin ( click here to view the full version ).

Tension fill the air, understandably, as the great shark is prone to bouts of thrashing. But at least there's no profanity.
