Home designer Sarah Phipps recently remodelled a tiny cottage on the west side of Bend, Oregon. It was in a great neighbourhood, but looked horrible, and everyone thought she should tear the house down. But Sarah Phipps loves things with history and character, so she reinvented the cottage, and I think she did a gorgeous job.
Sarah Phipps knew the cottage had been standing for almost one hundred years and that under the layers tacked on over the years, there would be wonderful surprises (along with some challenging ones!). The cedar shakes were rotten, but when she and her team started pulling them off they found the original lap siding, preserved.

It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint, two new side by side closets covered in bead board and a cottage style fan did for the bedroom.
The kitchen before
The kitchen owes a lot of its charm to serendipity. The rustic boards behind the sink were found when they pulled down drywall. Greg Blea arranged them in a great pattern. The cabinets in the kitchen and throughout the house were discovered at the local Habitat for Humanity Restore. The light over the sink is a Starfire Radial Wave Reflector Gooseneck Light in galvanized from Barn Light Electric. The pink refrigerator is from Smeg.
The bay window was removed and a very small addition was added to make room for additional living space and a second bathroom.
The finished addition.The high ceilings allowed Sarah Phipps to add a fan from Fanimation and two pendant lights from Roost . When the client doesn’t have guests, this room is living space. When she has a guest, the french doors close and it becomes a guest room with it’s own bath and separate entrance.
For the new bathroom, she found a claw foot tub on Craigslist for a steal. It came with the brass fixtures and was painted a pretty awful shade of 1980′s teal. She wanted to save the fixtures, so the tub black was painted black and worked around the brass and black theme. For the sink she found a matching brass fixture for the sink in Hippo Hardware , Portland.
In the new addition Sarah set up a Swig mini bar from CB2 with colorful artwork from World Market and a vintage globe and bar accessories
