Rainy Day Activities!

Well, hey ENOpians!

Not many people will deny that fresh air, clear skies and a warm breeze are enough motivation to be active – whether that means hiking, climbing, mountain biking or just hanging out in your front lawn.  There is some kind of energy in a beautiful day that can make even a moderately severe couch potato get up and do something.  Sunshine just makes everything better.

Boom.  Torrential downpour.

And the weatherman says this will go on until two days from now.  Trails are turned into creeks, rock faces become slides and your front lawn has giant puddles all over it.  Nobody wants to go outside, so you end up trying to think of inside activities to entertain yourselves and to keep yourself active.  Any suggestions?

1. Clean Take this time when you’re forced inside to deep clean your house.  You know the tops of the fans that haven’t been touched since the tenants before you?  Turn on your music, tie your hair up and get to work!  Mop the kitchen floor and vacuum the carpets.  Rearrange your cabinets and wash all of the sheets.  You’ll have worked up a sweat in under 30 minutes.

2. Kitchen Table Tennis Clear the kitchen table and string up some kind of substitute for the net (could be a string of yarn, bungee chord, vacuum cleaner cord or your roommate’s scarf).  Use a piece of scotch tape to divide the court into 2 parts.  Host a small tournament, or just see how many back-and-forths you can get in a row.

3. Living Room Yoga Yoga is one of those exercises you can do anywhere, anytime.  All you need is a little bit of space and the enthusiasm to align your chi.  If you don’t have a yoga routine already, it’s pretty easy to find sites online that will provide you with yoga workouts.  One such site, www.yogajournal.com allows you to build your own workout, choosing which poses and what sequence they’re in.  You can also view specified poses focusing on specific areas of your body.

4. Dance Like a Fool According to Harvard Health Publications, dancing can burn 180 to 266 calories in half an hour.  So get everyone in the living room, crank up your music, push back the sofas, drag the coffee table into the kitchen and kick off your Sunday shoes!

5. Read Reading is not just a relaxing pastime!  Ed Donner, in his article for Livestrong, says that the average person burns between 50 and 70 calories while they read.  And that’s lying down – sitting up when you read burns even more.

6. Hammock Indoors Are none of the above quite cutting it for you and nothing can quite beat the feeling of swaying in your hammock? Just hammock indoors ! It can, and is, very possible! Check out some enovative ENOpians below, then get creative!
