Travel Log: A Peak Inside Portland

One thing I’ve blithely realized in the past few months? Working an 8-5 job does not mean you have to sacrifice travel.  Trips may be shorter in length, both in distance and time, but they are still just as rewarding whether it’s a train ride to Portland or a ferry ride to the San Juan Islands.  I thought that my usual explore mode would have to settle down but the calendar has still been packed with adventure.

I love traveling. I love writing about traveling. So now I look back in time to share them, and pledge to be more diligent in posting my travel logs in a timely matter.

First stop: Portland, Oregon.

“Statistically, does Portland get more sun than Seattle?” I couldn’t help asking Jared as we walked around the city excited to see clear skies.  I could’t be bothered by the fact that I was still wearing 3 layers and boots…. I saw blue and felt sun which translates to automatic happiness. My feet had began to grow fidgety in the last few weeks.  Trying my best to not let depressing winter weather, well depress me, I believed the best cure would be a weekend wander-  a few days away from my desk and routine.  With Portland on my bucket list, Jared booked us train tickets for a mini getaway to “The City of Roses” with no real agenda besides hitting up at least six different coffee shops.

Our PDX weekend was highlighted by amazing eats, a lot of caffeine, mile walks up and down the city streets (to make room for more food), thrifting and even a few yoga classes.  I’ve said it before but I just love traveling with Jared. His free-spirit and generous heart means we are always meeting people (on the train, in line waiting for brunch, in the elevator, the concierge…. ) this man could truly make friends with anyone.  We were able to get around the city based mainly off these conversations with strangers recommending everything from the best fish tacos from a food tuck to the best brunch on Sunday.  I happily share my suggestions with you and would love to hear yours! This was my first but definitely not last time in Portland and I will need some pointers for next trip. 🙂

Stay: The Benson . Extra friendly staff work at this 100 year old hotel located near the Pearl District. European charm and an elegant luxury makes you feel like you’re back in 1913 (when the hotel was founded) especially with the piano and jazz singing duo in the lobby bar, The Palm Court.

Meander: The Portland Japanese Garden: close to the city but feeling miles away lies a little oasis of green and silence. Unfortunately because of winter there were no blooms.  Guess we’ll have to come back in the summer 🙂

Sip: Heart, Barista, Sterling, Courier, Ristretto Roasters for coffee and Cascade Brewery for sour beers.

Eat: Prasad, Lardo, Tasty & Alder, Salt & Straw  —–>

Relax: Revivanation After walking mile around the city, there isn’t a better way to relax than an hour long massage. We found Revivanation via Groupon (gotta love those deals) and both our massage therapists were excellent.

Shop: Any thrift store & Powell’s (the most amazing bookstore!)

Move: Yoga  Pearl was perfect walking distance from the hotel. Super friendly teachers and kick ass power classes.
