It’s crunch time and the Mongol Rally is fast approaching.
In less than a month we will be in London, England. While we are very excited to start the rally itself, we are even more excited to spend 8 days exploring London.
Believe it or not, we don’t know a lot about London. We know that there is some sort of Palace or maybe two, It has a family whose mom’s name is Elizabeth that people are pretty interested in, there is some kind of famous bridge in town and I think that there is a rock band or two that have had pretty successful careers come out of London.
All Kidding aside, we really feel overwhelmed with the amount of things to see and do in London, England. We’ve seen all of its famous sites in movies and learned about them in school. As Canadians we grew up hearing about the Royals and learning about it’s history. There are so many places that we want to see and don’t know where to begin.
When I look at our map, it looks like we are walking distance from Everything. St Pauls Cathedral, Soho, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Tower of London and Tower Bridge, Covent Garden and the West End.
It looks like we are staying in the area of Islington and I think that we are totally going to love every minute of it.

We have never been to England before and we have only just started doing our research now on what to see and do in the city.
Dave can’t wait to photograph it’s outstanding architecture, I can’t wait to see the places where famous events and moments in history took place and we both can’t wait to explore London’s different districts.
But We Are Overwhelmed
Can we fit it all in in 8 days while preparing for the Mongol Rally? What are the things that we Must See in London and what places or sites can we give a miss to? We have no idea.
So, we posed a question on facebook to ask people what we should see and do during our time in Jolly Old England. We don’t plan on leaving the city as we have a lot of preparations to do in between all the sightseeing that we plan on squeezing in, so here is our London itinerary plan….for now.
Anna Mackay of Your Journeys said – Book ahead of time and do the night tine Tower of London tour. It is very cool.
Thanks Anna, we are definitely going to see the Tower of London at night. It would be cool enough to see it during the day, but to add the element of darkness to the tour, I think it will make it extra eerie. Just the way we like it!
Renata Rogé of Sal Paolo, Brasil says – you HAVE to go to Covent Garden to enjoy the many street shows that take place there and the local street market. It’s amazing and you can easily spend the whole day there!
Renata that sounds awesome. Maybe will check that out the Saturday or Sunday before we leave. We have definitely heard of Covent Garden, so that is added to the list!
Christine Harris of Ireland says – Also take a ride on the London Eye, the Dungeon is great, shopping on Oxford St., bus tour and Covent Garden to rest the tired feet and enjoy top nosh!
- London Eye – check – We always love a good ride up in the air, so that one is going on the list.
- The Dungeon – check – But wait, what dungeon would that be?
- Oxford Street Shopping – pass – Can’t – unfortunately this one is going to have to be a pass, we can’t take a lot with us on the Mongol Rally in our mini car.
- Covent Garden – check – It looks like there is no way we can miss Covent Garden, so that is a must.

OKAY, will do! Maybe London has a city pass like the New York Pass that we used when we were there last year. That would be awesome!
Rachel Precious of London – Apparently the red double decker tour bus is good-full of Interesting facts…you must see Buckingham palace & the changing of the guards, I’d also recommend seeing a show at the west end (Les Miserables is my fave but there are heaps!)…If you want a real experience one evening for food go to Dans le Noir restaurant – it’s all in the dark, you can’t see a thing & the waiters are blind. It’s really fun, you find out after what you ate…food is lovely so don’t worry! It’s a real experience.
Rachel, Awesome Recommendations. We have always wanted to see the changing of the guards and Buckingham Palace. And there is no way we are going to miss riding on the double decker bus. We are so going to do every touristy thing we can think of. We both love Les Mis and it would be awesome to see a show in the West End. We have a blind restaurant in Toronto too called O Noir, it is a very cool experience indeed.
Lash of LashWorldTour said – You’ll love Camden Markets!
Ooh, Lash. I have heard of Camden markets. I will have to do some research to see what they are all about. Cheers!
We are very excited about our time in London. We’ve always avoided it because it was so expensive. Our Canadian Dollar didn’t stack up very well against the pound and we have always opted for more affordable locations like Central America or Asia . Participating in the Mongol Rally has forced us to finally visit a destination that we should have seen long ago.
Do you have any favourite places in London? Do you have suggestions of areas that we cannot miss or see or do? What should Dave not miss photographing? We’d love to hear your thoughts on what to see and do in London.
