I’m sure many of you are getting ready to enjoy the Super Bowl tomorrow, it’s definitely not my focus for the weekend but I will be tuning in to enjoy the half time show and the commercials, most likely doing a little crafting while I listen. Naval Grounds Engagement | Saltwater Studios

You know its something special when an out of town photographer like Saltwater Studios comes to our little bayfront city to capture an engagement! Amanda and Juliano were engaged in their favorite place (downtown Annapolis of course!) and could think of no better place for their engagement pictures. The United States Naval Academy provided the perfect backdrop. Fun fact, Saltwater Studios is based in Philadelphia – the very place where the first USNA was run for nine years before relocating here!

DIY | Wedding Countdown Blocks

Dreaming, planning and preparing for your big day should be one of the most special times of your life. Trying on wedding dresses, tasting cakes, choosing colors, spending extra time with your girlfriends… it’s all just so much fun. I had the time of my life planning my own wedding, but through some aspects it was hard to enjoy the day-to-day tasks, the non-fun stuff like transportation, signing contracts, paying bills and making the seating chart . Recently I’ve noticed a few of these “wedding countdown” projects around the web and thought it would be the perfect way for our creative brides to take a few moments each day to reflect and enjoy their planning process. So I’m sharing detailed steps (+ number key!) of how to make your own using either a Sharpie paint pen or stickers. Your actual wedding day will go by in a flash, so do everything you can to enjoy the entire process!

DIY | Wedding Countdown Blocks

SUPPLIES:

  • Wood Blocks (2x – 5.25″ x 1.75″ x 1.75″ — 4x – 1.75″ x 1.75″ x 1.75″)
  • Martha Stewart Crafts Paint in your favorite color (pictured: Gray Wolf + Caribbean Blue)
  • Sharpie Paint Pen -or- Stickers
  • Paint brushes
  • Pencil
  • Waxed paper

To find these supplies visit the “credits” at the bottom of the post.

The Wood Blocks

First let’s talk about the wood blocks. You can use ANY size wood blocks that you’d like, but the sizes I used here are below. For the turquoise set, my rectangle blocks were a little longer than 5.25″, around 5.75″. So again, use any size you want or you can cut down from what wood you might have laying around. I purchased two 10″ x 1.75″ x 1.75″ wood blocks off Amazon (linked below) and cut them down to the right sizes myself using a chop saw.

2x — 5.25″ x 1.75″ x 1.75″
4x — 1.75″ x 1.75″ x 1.75″

After you’ve cut and sanded your blocks, it’s time to paint! Protect your work surface with a piece of waxed paper. Paint only a few sides at one time so that you can lay the blocks down to dry without ruining the paint. Allow at least an hour of dry time in between each coat. I did two full coats of each color of paint.

DIY | Wedding Countdown Blocks

I’ve provided two templates below that you can download and print to “test” your handwriting and design before you actually paint on your blocks.

Block Number Key

So you might have realized that each block only has 6 sides and we need 10 numbers. So to make it easier to countdown, you’ll need to make a 4th block with extra numbers. Here I’ve created a key that you can follow as to what blocks need what numbers. Note: the 6’s double as 9’s so keep that in mind when choosing your font.

DIY | Wedding Countdown Blocks

Sharpie Paint Pens

Using a pencil draw your design onto each block and then trace with your paint pen. Depending on the color of paint pen you choose combined with the wood block color, you might have to go over the lines a few times.

DIY | Wedding Countdown Blocks

There are many different sayings that you can create for this block-duo!

DIY | Wedding Countdown Blocks

This project can easily be created in a weekend. Make for yourself or for a friend who just got engaged… if you are a bride, you could even pass this on after you’ve said “I Do”, to a friend getting ready to take the plunge!

Stickers

So let’s say you aren’t a fan of your own handwriting, no big deal — use stickers instead! I couldn’t find a sticker font I liked at my local craft store so I cut these out using black vinyl and my Cricut Explore . Note: make sure the stickers you choose are thin, the puffy or 3D stickers will not allow your blocks to sit flat and could make them look weird. Font used: Mensch .

DIY | Wedding Countdown Blocks

Adorable right? For this version, the wood blocks are a slightly different size just showing again that you really can use ANY size wood that you want!

DIY | Wedding Countdown Blocks

Optional: although this step is optional, I highly recommend it. Stickers + Wood = not the best seal. Seal your stickers to the wood using your favorite decoupage glue. Two coats, with at least an hour of dry time in between each means your stickers will be stuck to that wood for good!

This little countdown ceremony will surely add to the enjoyment of your wedding planning!

A little bit about the wedding:

Sarah and Michael’s wedding was a year in the making! With the help of Sarah’s mom and sister (Kelly and Emily) they slowly collected pieces such as furniture and other kinds of antiques for the decor. Kelly has an Etsy shop named 3LittleMustardSeeds. The custom tote bags for both Bride and Bridesmaid was made courtesy of, none other than, 3LittleMustardseeds . The popcorn stand was made by Sarah’s dad. The getaway car was provided through a friend of the family and what a classic. Many friends helped to play a part of this big day including the musicians and wedding day coordinator, Jen Kardian. It’s always a little more special when family and friends are involved and get to see the harvest of their hard work on the wedding day!

Engagement | Mike + Lauren

“Lauren and Mike are both elementary school teachers and met teaching at the same school. Their rooms were paired up and when Lauren’s students got in trouble she’d send them to Mike… that’s how they began dating! They are such a FUN couple and have so much love for each other. They got engaged after being in the mountains for a wedding. Mike made reservations to stay at The Sebastian. When they got to their hotel room Mike had their favorite champagne on ice and two outfits and all the accessories were laying out on the bed for Lauren to choose from to wear out to dinner. WOW. They wanted their engagement session to be fun and reflect their personalities. Of course we had to do something unique based on their profession. We used their classrooms for some fun teacher photos and Lauren made the save the date sign. We went outdoors for the rest and they both had amazing outfits and looked so great! We were by a lake and did a picnic with some wine! So romantic!” – KB Digital Designs

How did you find your photographer?

Last summer, I made my rounds as what felt like a professional bridesmaid. I was in three weddings and Katie Brewer of KB Digital Designs was the photographer for one of the weddings. She left a lasting impression on me with her approachable, positive attitude, and of course her stunning pictures. A photographer can really make or break the day of a wedding (believe me), they are part of everything from getting ready with your girls, to the ever important first look and I wanted to make sure that I had a photographer that I loved having around. After that wedding I was in with Katie, I knew that when it was my turn I wanted her and that was the first thing I planned once getting engaged last July.

What are you DIY-ing for your wedding?

My fiancé and I are both elementary school teachers so we are lucky enough to have our spring break and summers off together. Every chance we get we travel to Napa Valley, so we really want to bring a Napa feel to our wedding day. If you have seen something on Pinterest incorporating wine corks chances are I am trying it out. My family and friends have been tasked with saving as many wine corks and wine bottles as possible. My fiancé designed some fabulous wine labels for me to ask my bridesmaids that included our pictures. I was very impressed. We have had a lot of fun designing the save the dates and are excited to design the invitations next. I also don’t want to do the traditional wedding cake. I don’t think it will do my intense sweet tooth justice so I have been having a lot of fun putting together and planning a candy bar, s’more bar, and cake bar.

What are you looking forward to the most?

It sounds so cliche but I am most excited to actually get married. There are so many little things that I am excited to see come together, and of course have a big celebration with all of my closest friends and family in one place, but by far, I am most excited to go to sleep that night as Mrs. Atkins. – Lauren, the bride-to-be

Steal This Style | Boho Glam Bridesmaids

Hi Something Turquoise friends, it’s Lauren from I Love Love Events back with a very fashionable Steal This Style post. One of my very favorite wedding trends we’re going to see in 2015 is the bohemian meets glam wedding. What does that mean? It means sequins paired with boots, sparkles with messy hair and gold everything with leather details of all types. This trend seems so perfectly cool, California, it was only a matter of time before the rest of the country took to it as well.

Today I’m sharing a few options to achieve this affordable of-the-moment look for your bridesmaids. If you’re thinking of letting your girls choose their own dresses, then this is the perfect trend for you, because it lends itself to mixing and and matching so well. Not only can you mix and match the dresses, but the shoe options are endless, you could go boots, booties, lace-up pumps, more traditional or anything in between. While the combinations are endless, I would suggest keeping a couple consistencies, whether it’s the hem-length and style of the dresses, the accessories or footwear choices. Have fun with it and let your gals express themselves.

Wedding Under the Stars: Julie & David at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando

Julie and David's wedding at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes , captured by Kristen Weaver Photography , is proof that you can have it all on your wedding day. The two filled their celebration with fun, hints of geekery, meaningful bits and big "wow" moments while still keeping it elegant, formal and classy. And I don't think we've ever seen a ceremony this amazing - you won't want to miss it!

The two met four years ago, while working in a restaurant in Altamonte Springs. Three months into their relationship, David was offered a promotion to sous chef in Jacksonville; Julie took the leap and made the move with him. Two years later, he popped the question during the 4th of July fireworks display... and she said yes, of course! They are still living in Jacksonville and both working as chefs - he as the Executive Chef at Seasons 52, and she as a Sous Chef for The Capital Grille.

Says Julie, "The thing I love about David is that at a moment's notice he will turn on one of his favorite songs and, no matter what I might be doing, make me dance with him in the living room. We are goofy together and no matter how mad he is I can always make him crack a smile. We aren't perfect, but we are happy and always looking forward to what is next for us."

Inspired by weddings they'd attended over the years, David and Julie set out to incorporate what they loved from each one while making it their own. (Perfect plan, guys!) Their main guidelines: non-traditional, memorable, and (most of all) fun. They chose the Ritz-Carlton Orlando because of its beautiful outdoor area; the gazebo by the pond was exactly what they had envisioned for their ceremony under the stars, says Julie: "Between the twinkling lights wrapped around the gazebo, the chandelier, and the twilight, it made the ceremony so much more breathtaking than we had ever dreamed."

And the fireworks display - an homage to the 4th of July proposal, and a surprise for their guests - that was timed to start just after their first kiss? Ridiculously epic. It was the couple's favorite moment of the day.

The two were a little overwhelmed by their ideas and all the options at their fingertips, but their planners Kristin and Brandee helped them navigate all the decision making and keep the design cohesive. The reception was set up to feel a little like an outdoor cafe - with tree-like centerpieces and string lights across the dance floor - and the band kept the party going into the night. They rounded off dinner with an elegant silver and white cake and a fun candy/dessert bar.

Another favorite moment of theirs: a flash mob during the reception to the song "Happy" by Pharrell. Julie's bridesmaids started it, and her whole family jumped in: "I have never been more in awe of my friends and family and how much work they must have put into that for us. It was an amazing surprise." And how fun are all the signs and photo heads?

Congratulations, guys! It looks like amazingly fun times are in store for the two of you.
