Travel Turbulence & Staying Sane

@lschipper: Bellagio, Las Vegas

Apparently Vegas isn’t ready to let me go. I arrived at the airport, ready to catch my flight to California when I checked in to see a giant DELAYED sign on the computer screen.  Maintenance has me stranded at my gate waiting another 2 and half hours before I make my escape from the city of sin.  My options at the airport aren’t enticing.  Slot machines to my left and a Burger King behind me are what I have to work with. Thankfully free wi-if is on my side so I decided to share a few ideas if you find yourself in the same boat at some point traveling..

The following will be keeping my brain engaged and spirits high as I wait and watch the time pass.

1) SPOTIFY : My ears are always open and searching for new music.  Brendan James album “simplify” was recommended and this singer/songwriters soft vocals have helped to keep me calm despite my irritation.
More mellow tunes on my playlist include; Josh Garrels, Jamie Woon, and Allen Stone.

2) Apartment Therapy : leaves me aching for my own home and a generous budget to decorate with. *sigh* for now.. DIY projects it is!

Sockeye fishing closure considered as half of Upper Columbia’s run apparently dies in warm waters

Sockeye fishing closure considered as half of Upper Columbia’s run apparently dies in warm waters
Anglers admire their catch of sockeye and a few summer chinook after fishing the upper Columbia River near Brewster. (Rich Landers)

UPDATE, 2:20 p.m.: Sockeye closure has been announced starting Sunday, July 26, a half our after sunset  upper Columbia from Rocky Reach Dam upstream to Chief Joseph Dam.  More details coming.

FISHING -- Despite an early facade of excellent sockeye fishing success, the third-largest run on record is in dire straits and Washington fish managers are considering a possible early closure of the prized season in the upper Columbia River.

About half the sockeye run appears to have perished in the low flows and warm water conditions they've endured this year in their taxing migration up the Columbia toward spawning areas, says Jeff Korth, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife regional fisheries manager based in Ephrata.

State fish managers have not responded so far today regarding the status of the proposal.

Oregon and Washington have both enacted emergency fishing rules for some waters that might help fisheries to some degree in this freak year of low snowpack and early runoff that's ravaged the region's summer river flows.

Sturgeon fishing was closed this month after dozens if not hundreds of the decades-old giants were found dead in mid-Columbia reservoirs. The sturgeon were stuffed with sockeye and at least some of those sockeye were suffering from bacterial infections promoted by the warm waters.

In early July, biologists were already trying to figure out why 200,000 of the sockeye counted over Bonneville Dam did not make it upstream with their peers to swim over McNary Dam.

  • To date, 503,000 sockeye have been counted swimming over Bonneville, the first dam they encounter on the Columbia on their migration from the ocean.  About 270,000 have been counted over McNary as they enter the upper Columbia at the Tri-Cities.

Last week, government fish scientists monitoring the Columbia, Snake and Southwest British Columbia sockeye returns began coming up with enough evidence to describe the situation among themselves in terms such as "catastrophic."

Sockeye fishing closure considered as half of Upper Columbia’s run apparently dies in warm waters

Columbia water temperatures have started to tick downward a degree or two and may continue in cooler weather forecast through this weekend. Whether that's enough change to enable more sockeye to survive remains to be seen.

Korth said the forecast weatehr isn't going to be enough. "We desperately need the cooler weather," he said in an email, "but it's to get the remaining fish up the Okanogan River and through Osoyoos Lake."

Idaho began trucking some of its endangered Snake River sockeye upstream to hatcheries in hopes of saving enough broodstock to continue a run they've had encouraging results in rebuilding from virtually nothing.

The salmon seasons attract thousands of anglers to the Columbia system rivers. A closure would be a huge blow to local economies in towns such as Brewster.

Summer chinook, which are moving up the Columbia in record numbers, apparently are not suffering so much in the warm flows and there's been no discussion of closing chinook fishing.

But the sockeye run is hurting and future sockeye runs may be in jeopardy, Korth said.

On July 1, Korth had a gut feeling things could get bad as I interviewed him for a story about the upper Columbia salmon season opener, which produced very good success rates.

“More than three salmon per angler is darned good opening-day fishing,” Korth said. But he couldn't ignore the other numbers on his radar.

Even then, the sockeye were stalled below the mouth of the Okanogan River, which was far above mean temperatures and well above the 72-degree threshold that prevents the fish from continuing their run. Normally the fish rush when they can uptream to the deep, cool waters in Canada's Osoyoos Lake where they hunker until conditions are right for them to spawn.

This week, Columbia River water out of Wells Dam below Brewster was a livable 65 degrees for sockeye (71 at Bonneville).  However, Okanogan River temps were as high as 84 degrees.

“We had 15,000 (sockeye) try to make the run up (the Okanogan) the other day and they all died,” Korth says in a story Thursday about the proposed closure by Northwest Sportsman editor Andy Walgamott.

Korth knew anglers would do well in catching the sockeye stacking up below the Okanogan and looking for a cool place to go.

“It’s going to be a dicey year for managing that stock – but a good year for fishing,” he said.

Now he's wondering how fish managers can assure that enough sockeye survive disease and fishermen to make it upstream to spawn and continue the run for the future.

Korth, who says he's waiting today for a response from fisheries officials in Olympia, explained to Northwest Sportsman:

  • With the hot water providing ideal conditions for culimnaris bacteria to thrive, a fish’s wounds from scraping on rocks and fish ladders are quickly infected, leading to lesions.
  • Migrating salmon need more oxygen because of the high metabolic rate needed to swim against currents, but warm waters tend to have less dissolved oxygen.
  • Lake Wenatchee sockeye may not even meet escapement goals, much less return in numbers high enough for a fishing season, which had been scheduled to open last weekend. Korth believes half of the Lake Wenatchee run has died, too. Fewer than 12,000 of the 106,000 forecast have returned so far over Tumwater Dam.

  • Half of the sockeye in the Brewster pool are likely to die instead of reaching Canada’s Okanagan and tributaries to spawn in September and October.
  • Upper Columbia salmon anglers so far have caught around 20,000 sockeye during a fishery that’s been described as “nothing short of fantastic.”  (Anglers caught about 40,000 during the entire 2014 season.)

“I just hope it’s not too much,” Korth told Walgamott. “Just a couple months ago we were all rejoicing because of the (salmon) forecasts.”

Korth says he’s proposed closing the Upper Columbia for sockeye, but a final decision is up to state fishery managers in Olympia.

They have not responded to queries this morning.

Dubstep Locks and Loads Its Laser Cannons With DubWars Video Game

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bjt4uJZ-9XY]

For anyone interested in a music-inspired video game that offers a twist on the rhythm-based experiences we’ve seen a million times before, DubWars might just offer the unique spin you’re after, as well as gifting dubstep fans with a reason to celebrate at the same time.

Based on the game mechanics of a classic arcade top-down shooter, instead of forcing you to tap buttons in a certain rhythm, DubWars takes away a degree of control and syncs your shooting with the movement of the music. Once the track triggers an ammunition payout from your weapon, it’s your job to use it for the destruction of your enemies. Otherwise, it’s a test of whether you can survive until the next bass-driven round of destruction.

Using the sounds of a number of up-and-coming dubstep producers like NGTMRE , the music is transformed into a weapon as your avatar fires in sync to the rhythm of the song.

DubWars is available now on Steam . Watch a review rundown below, courtesy of the experts over at Penny Arcade .

The Future Of Food? Testing ‘Soylent’ Meal-Replacement For An Active Lifestyle

It’s day three of my no-food challenge. I pour my slurry and tip a glass, the substance hesitates then oozes down. Soylent , a powder-based product, tastes like a mild pudding on my tongue.

The Future Of Food? Testing ‘Soylent’ Meal-Replacement For An Active Lifestyle

It mixes with water to make a smoothie of rice protein, oat flour, folic acid, soy lecithin, and dozens more ingredients. There’s a subtle sweetness then something bready, a flavor that conjures licking pancake batter from a spoon.

Down my throat, into the stomach, into the bloodstream. The vitamins, minerals, carbs, fats, and proteins are taking effect. Then I am off to my day, riding a bike, working, and, in the afternoon, a 5-mile run.

Could an active person live off Soylent alone? I would give the meal-replacement product a three-day test to start.

Food Of The Future?

Invented in 2013, Soylent is advertised as a perfect food. Or “non-food,” perhaps — Soylent stands in for sandwiches, cereal, meat, and even fresh fruit.

It came to market with big claims and a huge vision. The lab-built sustenance could change a person or change the world, creator Rob Rhinehart preached.

Meal-replacement powders are not new. But Soylent’s claim is that it can replace all meals — Rhinehart lived for 30 days off the stuff during an initial trial.

Some people go much longer, eating Soylent and nothing more, and living what they report to be normal, healthy lives.

The Future Of Food? Testing ‘Soylent’ Meal-Replacement For An Active Lifestyle
Soylent comes in plain white pouches with ingredients and nutritional info on the outside

All nutritional requirements for an average adult are covered in Soylent’s stew, the company states. It’s made to let people feed themselves quickly, economically, and with little waste.

Broader, Soylent was designed to feed the masses of the planet on a product that’s less reliant on agriculture and other resources-heavy institutions of food.

A week’s supply costs $85; a month, with 112 pouch-meals, is $300. Each daily pouch has 2,000 calories and is based off a carbohydrate/fat/protein ratio of 43/40/17. Most common vitamins and minerals are included.

Soylent is made in a science lab. The company, Rosa Labs, headquartered in Los Angeles, releases the mixture in versions, like software updates, currently on Soylent 1.4.

It uses no animal products but is not certified organic and does contain genetically-modified (GMO) as well as natural ingredients.

The current recipe, developed under the guidance of a professor of medicine at Columbia University, is approved as a food by the Food and Drug Administration.

You will need to research and read to get into details on the nutritional back story and the utopian visions; there’s not enough space here, but you can start by looking at the company’s About page. The powder’s rising popularity and the startup company’s success, including tens of millions of dollars in venture funding, hint that Soylent is here to stay.

My Test

A three-day test is paltry compared to individuals who go for months on the stuff. But even 60+ hours feels like a long time for a Soylent newbie like me.

It started on a Thursday. I mixed the concoction by hand, shaking the powder in a pitcher with water for a minute before I drank. Breakfast was easy, and I “ate” my Soylent with a mug of coffee before packing a bottle of it for work.

Lunchtime was liquid, which is new for me. But the mild taste and stomach-filling nature of Soylent satisfied. Later in the day, after my usual 5-mile afternoon run, I began to crash.

The Future Of Food? Testing ‘Soylent’ Meal-Replacement For An Active Lifestyle

I craved more Soylent, but alas my work bottle was empty. I ordered a sandwich and vowed to start fresh on Friday.

The next three days went better, and for nine meals in a row I did not touch regular food. I brought more Soylent to the office, and I kept a batch at home ready to drink at all times.

Instead of meals, I drank it whenever hunger hit. The thick sludge fills you fast, and after a cup I did not crave anything more. In short, it was working.

The taste is an acquired thing, though I took to Soylent pretty quickly. A hint of chalk was the least palatable part, but letting Soylent sit in the fridge and congeal a bit improved the taste.

I also found a blender, as opposed to hand mixing, creates a creamier Soylent that is easier to put down.

Conclusions

Overall, I felt good, healthy, and clear-headed. The no-food trial was weirdly satisfying. I was able to work, run, bike, manage my kids, and be less concerned with eating and the chore (and time suck) that it can be.

For use beyond normal life, including camping or backpacking, Soylent could work. The powder is not particularly high-calorie for its bulk, and with water added it can spoil if left unrefrigerated. But for day-long outdoor activities I plan to take Soylent as a quick, hunger-quenching fuel.

The Future Of Food? Testing ‘Soylent’ Meal-Replacement For An Active Lifestyle
About 1,000 calories of Soylent; this batch was blended to a creamy, frothy consistency

I drank the Kool-Aid, it seems. I’m not quitting food, but I do like the Soylent solution on a few levels. It’s fast, easy, affordable, and the flavor is so even-keeled that I can literally drink it for days.

My Soylent box is now empty. I already put in an order for more.

Aligning Your Values to Your Travel Purpose

Ever wondered why your life is not flowing for you? No matter how hard you try you just can’t seem to make it fit right?

You don’t seem to have a clear idea of what is important to you. You waffle and are confused by the greyness of the world. You come close to reaching a goal and then at the last minute it disappears blown away by the puff of the wind.

Or, do you understand the feel of life when it flows, as if everything that happens around you happens just for you? The planets align and you spend every day doing what you were born to do.

This doesn’t mean that life does not have its challenges; it does and will always because that is just the human experience. But when the flow is happening life is good and manageable, despite the difficulties that arise.

Most of the time, when things aren’t going the way we want them to it is because we are living our life out of sync with our values. It took me many years to understand this and when I did a long time to accept it.

Sometimes our values don’t line up so well with the way others expect you to live and to be. And for this reason we may choose to live out of accordance with them.

This generally results in a lot of pain for you. This is why life just never feels right.

Each of us has a value system that we need to live by

Aligning Your Values to Your Travel Purpose Your values act as your personal compass guiding you.

The direction of our lives is controlled by this magnetic pull of our values. They are the force in front of us, consistently leading us to make decisions that create the direction and ultimate destination for our lives.

Not using the internal compass results in frustration, disappointment, lack of fulfilment and a nagging sense that life could be more if something were different. In opposite, using this compass gives us a sense of certainty, an inner peace and total congruency.

Your values are usually formed from your life experiences and conditioning through punishment and reward and those role models that surround us every day from birth.

Think about the value you pride yourself on. If you’re not sure what that is, it usually comes down the thing you’d fight tooth and nail to keep. They are the things that fulfil you and make your life rich and rewarding.

All of our decisions should be based around these values. We have all of them within us, but there are usually two or three that take precedence above all others.

My values are FREEDOM, FUN and CONTRIBUTION

Before I understood what this value system was and what I treasured, I saw myself as being someone who was irresponsible, could not settle down, someone with their head in the skies, and someone who was on the run.

I did not know what was wrong with me. I could not hold down a full time job, not because I was a bad worker or was fired, but because I chose not to.

Two years max was all I could ever do. And even then it was temporary positions so I could run out that door if needed.

The constant nomad, wandering aimlessly, unknown what I was searching for because for some reason I thought that I had to search of something so this must have been what I was doing.

LOST

When really I was FOUND. I was just doing what I was born to do.

FREEDOM

It is what I value the most. The minute someone starts telling me what to do I feel the walls closing in on me and I can’t breathe. The minute I feel myself doing something I don’t want to do my whole body tightens and wants to scream out in frustration.

It’s led to a constant battle to figure out what it is I should be doing. Once I sorted out my values, I sorted out what I should be doing. Travelling and blogging . Always my terms.

It’s what gets me up early in the morning and keeps me working late at night. Any other way of being just does not work for me; I feel stressed, confused, frustrated unhappy and unfulfilled.

FUN/JOY

Understanding your values system can also help you to work out ways to overcome challenges. It is kind of difficult to have a value system of fun, because often life is not.

I would find myself so many times wanting to quit things I started. I felt like a flake, someone who couldn’t follow through, a lazy arse. When really that is not true, I am a hard worker and I am determined to succeed.

I just have difficulty continuing on with things if I don’t find it fun. (One reason why I am still, at 36, often the first to arrive and last to leave a party.) I guess you could also term it as joy. Joy is my most esteemed emotion and I think the only point to life.

Freedom helps me to feel the joy. Once I had children the joy hit all-time levels-Joy at giving someone else the gift of life, joy at experiencing unconditional love, joy of spending every day with my family. Travel provides me with total joy; another reason why I can’t stop. (see the connection here with freedom)

I know now that when I reach a point in whatever I am doing that is not fun and I want to quit, then I have to find a way to make it fun. Maybe I put on some music, get a little silly with it, take a break, whatever I can to make it joyful again then I can easily carry on and get done what I have to.

CONTRIBUTION/MAKING A DIFFERENCE

I think I spent many years ignoring this value of mine. I ignored it because I had a total lack of belief in myself. I never thought I had anything to contribute or could make a difference.

Whenever you are out of alignment with your values, you are going to feel an enormous amount of pain until you get back on track. And I did. It took me many years until I got over the fact that I thought I wasn’t good enough.

And then contribution became a major part of my values system. I can’t leave this world without knowing that I somehow made a difference. I believe that I do have something to contribute now and it is why I do what I do. Share the world with others and hopefully inspire them to live their best life- why? Because it’s fun and it’s liberating!

How can your values system affect your travel choices?

People will always make decisions based on their value systems, whether they are aware of it or not. The more aware you are of them, the better you are at making those decisions and the more aligned you will feel with your purpose. This is why there is never a BEST way to travel , as each of us have different values that work for us.

Do you really want to travel, but just can’t find the way to make it work for you?

Maybe security is one of your highest value and having that taken away by an unpredictable life is just too much for you to bear. Once you understand this you can make some changes. Create a way to travel that is quite structured to give you that peace of mind.

Maybe it is through an organized guided tour of a country, in your own country, or with friends and family.

Maybe its comfort which is why solo travel scares you to death and the thought of leaving your friends and family even more terrifying. Maybe you should plan travel with a few of your close friends, or work on making new friends the minute you go.

That could also be why the thought of camping makes you feel ill. Resorts and luxury travel might be your thing.

Maybe it’s contribution. Travel for you then would mean volunteering around the world and doing whatever you can to help make the world a better place.

Can you change your value systems?

I think you can, although I believe there will be some that you just can’t change as they are what will align you most with your purpose, which is why you came here.

Perhaps there is a calling you have and your value system is getting in the way of that. Maybe you really want to be an entrepreneur but you value security so highly. Maybe then you have a lot of work to do in changing your focus and mindset.

Sometimes your values my clash with each other and a change needs to be made. Recently my health took a hit and I had to have a couple of operations. This was a major signal to me that I did not have health as a high enough values priority and so I made a couple of changes to push it up the list.

Step by step I think you can change your values

I first heard about how to do this from Anthony Robbins. He says the steps to setting up or changing your values system is:

Step One: Gain awareness of what your current values are so you understand why you do what you do?

Step Two: Make conscious decisions about what values you want to live by in order to shape the quality of life and destiny you truly desire and deserve.

To discover your values answer one simple question

“What’s most important to me in life?”

Be careful you don’t choose means values like money, family. These are really not what you are pursuing. The feelings are the end values. Those things that money and family will bring, like security and love are the values you need to live in accordance with.

Here’s a list of some values to help you.

Love, success, freedom, intimacy, security, adventure, power, passion, comfort, health, contribution, growth, happiness, creativity

Tell me in the comments below what do you think your top three values are.

Does it help you to see why you may have made some decisions on your life? Can you use this information to help you make changes, to understand what it is you have to do with your life? Does it help you to know how you can travel or your style of travel?

Sorry

As you can see I’ve been so busy of late I’ve had little, if any, time to update my websites or keep up with the blog. But these are the things that always go first. I will keep up with my life in him, my time with Sara and the kids when they want (Yes, I got some play time in with Aimee last night!), my personal connections with others and my responsibilities. Only when those are well served do I get to tinker with the web sites. So I know the travel page is well out of date and the blog entries have lagged. It looks better up ahead, however, since I’ll be around the place a bit more over the next few weeks finishing up some other projects. It’s just that getting home from a lengthy trip and sorting through the things I need to do here as a result takes a bit of catching up.

I’ve also been busy helping the local police department bring a diverse array of service providers together who want to provide a relational connection for those kids in gang neighborhoods who want to stay gang-free. That’s been a bit of work as well! So, now you know the rest of the story…

But I had an awesome time on Vancouver Island with a whole lot of different folks. Over the weekend we met with a wonderful group of people who are sorting out how to live free in Christ. They started with a lot of issues about leadership, meetings, and the like, but we soon got lost in the wonder of living in the immense affection of our Father and seeing how naturally that lives out in our lives with other people. That stuff is way too much fun.

Dead fin whale, probably killed by a ship, found in L.A. Harbor

Dead fin whale, probably killed by a ship, found in L.A. Harbor

A dead fin whale estimated to measure about 60 feet arrived in Los Angeles Harbor on Tuesday evening on the bow section of a container ship that most likely delivered its fatal wounds.

Only about 45 feet of the carcass, not including the head or tail, was visible above and just below the surface on Wednesday, after the whale had been tied to a dock (see photos). It was reasonably fresh, indicating that the whale had died recently, perhaps within 24 hours of when it was discovered.

"Based on the shape of the carcass at the posterior end, it appears that there was impact of blunt force, and around that area there was hemorrhaging," Christina Fahy, an NOAA Fisheries biologist who inspected the carcass Wednesday, stated via email. "Which means the whale was alive when it was struck."

Dead fin whale, probably killed by a ship, found in L.A. Harbor Fahy could not state as fact that the ship in question had killed the whale. That ship is the Ever Daity of the Evergreen line.

According to the Daily Breeze , it's from Coco Solo, Panama.

Fahy added: "The Coast Guard noted that the whale was higher in the water than last night, so it was just starting to bloat. [But] the whale did not smell, nor was its skin sloughing, so I suspect it was a recent occurrence."

The carcass was to be towed to the west end of San Clemente Island on Wednesday night.

A handful of whales, often including endangered fin whales and blue whales , are killed by ship strikes off California each year.

Blue whales are the largest creatures to have inhabited the planet, measuring to 100 feet and weighing up to 150 tons. Fin whales are the second largest whale species, and can measure to nearly 80 feet.

Both whales feed on tiny shrimp-like krill, which has been bountiful off Southern California this winter. There have been several fin whale sightings recently off the Los Angeles area, including busy shipping areas, and Orange County.

Boaters who encounter an injured or distressed whale are asked to call NOAA's 24-hour hotline at 877-767-9425, or to hail the Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16.

Adhere The Stickers + Banners

Using Glue Dots, add the stickers to the vellum banner and then on the backside of the vellum — only where the stickers are — add more Glue Dots and adhere to the invitation card. All adhesive will show through vellum, so you can hide the adhesive behind the stickers!

Add Washi Tape

Cut a strip of metallic washi tape (or any type that you fancy) and add a strip to the very top of the invitation. Wrap or cut off the extra from the ends.

4th of July Wedding at the Anchor Inn by JFannon Photography

We normally take Fridays off, but we had to kick off this holiday weekend with some festive fanfair! Jess+Keith are about to celebrate their 1 year anniversary of their 4th of July wedding at the Anchor Inn, they have since welcomed a beautiful baby to their family, and we are thrilled to share this wedding from J Fannon Photography with you all! For a little bit of a different point of view, today we are sharing the groom’s thoughts on the day! “Although our wedding wasn’t in Baltimore, we wanted to do some of our pictures there (including our first look) since we have such a connection with the city. We took some photos along the harbor, and were fortunate enough to finish before a light rain started. By the time the wedding party reached the venue along the Patapsco River, the weather had cleared up and it was a beautiful day for a wedding. After exchanging personally written vows as part of a heartfelt ceremony, we were able to officially start the celebration part of the evening. When we decided on July 4th as our wedding date, we were hoping that there would be plenty of fireworks set off nearby, and we were not disappointed. All in all, it was a wonderful day and the perfect way to start off our journey together as a married couple.”
