Who doesn’t dream of taking a ride on a gondola in Venice?

For decades Venice Gondolas have been romanticized in the movies and ever since seeing Katherine Hepburn cruising through the canals in Summertime, people have flocked to Venetia to listen to That’s Amoré while being slowly pushed through its famous waterways.

Today’s Venice is a different picture.

Masses of tourists stop on day trips from their cruises and the canals are plugged with Gondoliers jockeying for position and fighting for each fare. There are hundreds of Gondolas in Venice ready and waiting to charge over €100 per boat load of visitors looking to live their dream.

This picture is a rare serene moment near San Marcos Square. Venice has always been a busy hub where merchants and traders ruled the waterways for nearly a millenium during the Venetian empire and it continues to thrive with 12 million visitors per year.

The time to walk around the city is late at night or early in the morning when nobody has arrived and you have the streets to yourself to daydream about the Golden era of Venice during a grander more decadent time.
