Volac Blows Up the Spot With Savage G-House Beats on “Grow Up”

It’s becoming a full-time job trying to keep up with Night Bass. AC Slater’s imprint has increasingly become one of the healthiest imprints in operation right now, known for putting heads up on chief cuts coming out from the corners of bass house, garage and the like. The label’s A&R arm is undeniably making moves, with Volac being the next prize of their perceptive eye.

Russia might seem like an odd place for a G-house project to sprout, but that unlikelihood has done little to deter the duo from becoming one of the most buzzing names within the realm. Having really taken off in South America, due in no small part to their affiliation with the Mix Feed fam, the guys are about to ramp up their presence Stateside with a little help from the NB crew. From the three low-end-loaded bits living on their Grow Up EP, the titular cut really underlines the dudes’ ability to deal out bass-concentrated jams. This one in particular is propped up by a heavy-footed lead that romps around a low-profile vocal hook. It’s straight-up savage. Grab the first play of it below, and then catch some words straight from the source.

How did the Volac project first come together?
Volac is two guys, Stas and Sasha! We’ve been friends since childhood and both started loving electronic music early, so we tried to do tracks together. When we were very young, we were doing different kinds of dance music. After two years, we started to prefer deep house. Then, we continued on to do some G-house and bass house music.

Volac was born very simply! One day we were making a track with a lot of vocals, and when we were saving it, we used the wrong two letters—“L” and “C.” We saved a track with title “Volac” and loved the name!

Hip-hop is an unquestionable influence on your sound. What made you originally gravitate toward that culture to begin with?
We have listened to hip-hop since childhood. Hip-hop culture leaves a strong mark on our creativity. When we are on tour or just relaxing, hip-hop is the second genre after house music that we listen to.

How did house work its way into the picture? Were you listening to both genres simultaneously, or were there phases between the two?
House music came to us in about 2006 with tracks like Mylo’s “Drop the Pressure” and Michael Gray’s “Weekend to Begin.” We started to follow house music. In 2011, we discovered something like hip-hop house; some people called it G-house. After that, we started making something in-between our favorite genres, house and hip-hop.

You’re a part of the Mix Feed family, which has really helped expand your reach into other parts of the world, like Brazil. What’s your reaction to being more recognized in a country other than your native Russia?
We are really thankful for the Mix Feed family (Denis, Anton and Lucian). They really believed in our music and us. When we chose house music as our main purpose in life, we set global goals. We always try to make music that will be played everywhere around the world. It motivates us when other artists and DJs from other parts of the world support our music and us.

In Brazil, we are more popular than in Russia. Brazil is a really beautiful country with great and friendly people! We always love playing there. The crowd in Brazil is amazing. But there are a lot of countries where we can find people who love our music, and we are trying to make Volac more popular in new countries!

You’re about to drop an EP with the Night Bass crew. How did you first link up with them, and why do you think these three tracks are a good fit with the label?
Night Bass is a great label where we always wanted to release. We respect them and their team because they give a chance for young talent with their releases. It was one of our goals to be a part of the Night Bass family. We sent our demos to AC Slater and received an email from him that he loves the tracks. We were so excited about it.

Then we made these tracks, which we sent only to Night Bass. The tracks have something from bass, deep, house and tech, and there is only one label that can release it: Night Bass.

Tell us the backstory behind “Grow Up.” What was going on in your life when the track was coming together? Is there a deeper meaning behind the track’s title?
Grow Up” is a track about growing up. Everyone must grow up and do what they love. We love to produce music, and we have tried to grow in that. It became the main meaning of the track: We definitely, like, grew up!
