Straight outta the Canary Islands, mysterious and punchy Gilmer Galibard drops four wall-rattling techno jams via Turbo Recordings. Last we heard of Gilmer, he was working a Balearic techno vibe on his Lost Tapes EP, released by Lobster Theremin satellite Mörk records. Lost Tapes was heavy on brooding atmospherics, deep, rolling bass, and polished, steel robotic rhythms, reminiscent of I:Cube’s interstellar funk, the essence of which finds its way to his new EP, A Baker’s Shit Ton.
Premiering today, “Bougarabou”—a polyrhythmic ode to the eponymous West African drum—deviates slightly from the galactic wah-wah for an earthier, organic, but no less transcendent groove. Hypnotic beats loop around crackling rhythms buoyed by ominous synth washes, its sustained pattern creating a four-on-the-floor seance. Galibard is clearly in a prolific mode, cranking out EPs that explore techno’s darker energies, which makes us look forward to what he’s cooking up next.
Available October 14 via Turbo Recordings.
