Therm-A-Rest recently announced their completed purchase of camping cot maker LuxuryLite. One of the most popular items sold by Cabela's, the LuxuryLite Cots will give Therm-A-Rest a wider sleep system offering and open up new markets such as hunting.
LuxuryLite offers two types of camping cots, the UltraLite Cot and the Mesh Cot. Both cots are supported by a patented bow frame technology made from anodized aluminum poles and durable nylon feet. The unique frame design eliminates the need for crossbars that jam into your back in the middle of the night and also keeps the top fabric taught enough that you don't sink down into the cot as the night wears on.
The UltraLite Cot weighs only 2 lbs 12 oz. with a laminated waterproof nylon cover, perfect for the fast and light backpacking crowd. The Mesh Cot’s breathable mesh fabric cover provides excellent ventilation for camping on hot summer nights. A full 26 inches wide, you get extra space and comfort in exchange for a little extra weight at 3 lbs 12 oz.
The camping cots pack down to a small size (15 in x 6 in) for easy portability in either your backpack or bike pannier. The cots can be set up in just minutes, with no requirement for extra tools.
Expect to see the LuxuryLite Cots available at Therm-A-Rest retailers sometime this month. With Therm-A-Rest now firmly behind the LuxuryLite brand, I can imagine it will be hard going forward for Terra Strenua, the company that unsuccessfully tried to raise money for their NYX ultralite camping cot on Kickstarter earlier this year.
I am definitely going to have to get myself an UltraLite Cot to see if it helps my backcountry sleeping ability this summer. Although, I was pretty happy sleeping in my hammock down in the Grand Canyon .
