Why You Should Bring Your Dog Camping

by Anna Fletcher

If you are planning a camping or backpacking trip, there are essentials that you will need to take with you, like your tent, headlamps, food, and of course your hammock . Another essential that should be added to the list is your dog. Why?

No Boarding Expenses

For many dog owners, the thought of leaving their pet while they take a vacation is disheartening. Not only do kennels tend to be expensive, you can’t know for sure the quality of care being given or how lonely it may be for the dog. If, instead of being put in a kennel, the dog is being cared for by a family member or friend, there is the added burden of a dog and all of the responsibilities that come with it put upon them. And what’s even worse is leaving the dog at the house alone. Loneliness, worry, separation, and reliance on someone else can all be avoided if you bring your dog along with you.

Security

When you are outdoors, you have the potential of facing countless dangers. Animals that live in the area can easily invade campsites, especially when there is food around, and you can never be sure that you will not be bothered by them or other people. Having your loyal companion with you in the wilderness can help keep your tent and possessions safe. A well-trained dog can also help you find your way back to the campsite if you become lost in the woods.

Training

The great outdoors is an excellent opportunity for you to work with your dog on obedience training. Working with your dog on staying with you and not running off is definitely tested when there is endless space for them to run around. If you’re working on excessive barking, camping is a good crash course on teaching your dog not to chase or bark after squirrels, birds, or other small animals.

New Environment

A new environment introduces new sights, smells, people, and animals, which will enrich your dog as well as your family. Your dog will love having an exciting new place to sniff and explore. Not only will he have an opportunity to run around and get ample exercise, which is beneficial to his health and well-being; he can interact with you in a different setting outside of his comfort zone, which will strengthen your bond. Camping offers many different ways to play with and exercise your dog:  hiking, playing fetch, swimming, throwing a Frisbee, and exploring nature.

Companionship

If you are traveling or camping alone, your dog will provide much-needed companionship. And if you have kids who are going along with you, the family dog will make it easier for them to settle into their new surroundings and help ease their homesickness. Relaxing and exploring with your trusting and loving companion will be sure to lift your mood.

Planning ahead is essential for a successful camping or backpacking trip, especially when you add a dog to your group. You would never want to get to your destination just to be disappointed. Research the area that you are thinking about setting up camp in to make sure that it allows dogs and to find out their leash policy. There are countless camping spots that are dog-friendly – you just have to find them!
